Ticats’ Orlondo Steinauer would consider NFL coaching opportunity if it presented itself

Current Hamilton Tiger-Cats head coach Orlondo Steinauer would consider coaching in the National Football League.

“If I’m supposed to go to the NFL and be able to be a head coach, that will present itself. But I’m going to work hard and do the best I can and let everything else take care of itself,” Steinauer told Nick Patterson of the Everett Herald.

“As far as coaching, I had an interview for a defensive backs job with Miami a while back. But I’ve been grateful, and I’ve worked my tail off to be where I’m at now.”

During Steinauer’s first year as bench boss of the Ticats, the black and gold produced a 15-3 win-loss record, which set a single-season franchise best for victories. Hamilton was dominant scoring the most points (551) in the three-down league and allowed the fewest (344). The first-time head coach captured the CFL coach of the year award in 2019.

The 46-year-old worked for four years under then-Ticats vice president of football operations Kent Austin from 2013-2016 in Hamilton. He originally joined the organization as a defensive coordinator before being promoted and adding assistant head coach to his duties in May 2016.

Steinauer was as a standout defensive back in the CFL with Ottawa (1996), Hamilton (1997-2000) and Toronto (2001-2008). He won two Grey Cups (1999, 2004) and five times was named a CFL all-star. The Seattle native had an NFL stint with the Miami Dolphins.

But Steinauer is much more than a former player who’s graduated to the coaching ranks. While being a trusted technician of X’s and O’s, the Western Washington University grad has the charisma, class and calm demeanour to be a main face of a franchise.

“I got a sniff of what (the NFL) was like. Was I able to make a career of it down there? Absolutely not,” Steinauer said. “I was able to play 12 years, largely because I was able to stay relatively healthy, but I kept to the grind wherever I was at and didn’t worry about other opportunities.”
