Ticats approve Redblacks requests to interview Condell, Washington for head coach job

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have approved the Ottawa Redblacks request to interview offensive coordinator Tommy Condell and defensive coordinator Mark Washington for the head coach position in the nation’s capital, per sources.

Condell and Washington had the two best respective units in the CFL.

Condell called the plays for the most prolific offence in the CFL, scoring 551 points — 30.6 per game. Even after franchise quarterback Jeremiah Masoli went down with a season-ending ACL knee injury, the Ticats offence produced with Dane Evans at QB.

Evans took over the starting quarterback job and went 10-2 during the regular season and helped the Tabbies reach the Grey Cup. The 26-year-old passed for 3,754 yards with 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions completing 72 percent of his attempts.

Brandon Banks was named the Most Outstanding Player leading the three-down circuit with 112 receptions for 1,550 yards and 13 touchdowns in Condell’s offence. Banks was one of four CFL all-stars on Condell’s offence. Bralon Addison had a breakout season with 95 catches for 1,236 yards and seven touchdowns. Offensive linemen Brandon Revenberg and Chris Van Zeyl had standout season, the latter claimed the Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award.

Meanwhile, Washington’s group was the stingiest in the entire league, allowing 344 points — 19.1 per outing. He oversaw vocal leader Simoni Lawrence post a career-high 98 tackles while using the versatile defender in multiple ways. Hamilton’s defence was fast and physical. Lawrence believed the Ticats played at a different speed level compared to their rivals around the league and Washington played a role in it.

Lawrence was the East Division’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player and a league all-star. Defensive lineman Dylan Wynn recorded a career-high 11 sacks, the most among any interior players in the CFL. Defensive backs Tunde Adeleke and Richard Leonard achieved all-star status with guidance from Washington.

“There’s always going to be interest in Mark Washington and Tommy Condell — I would call everybody on our staff to be honest with you and see if there’s a fit with the organization,” head coach Ordlono Steinauer said.

“I’m in favour of anybody that is trying to better themselves, that they want to take a look at those sort of things. I’m going to be fully supportive of that, I know the organization will also.”

Condell and Washington were key coaching pieces with Steinauer leading the way as the Ticats set a franchise record with 15 wins in the regular season. Ottawa’s record was completely the opposite — 3-15. The Redblacks could employ Condell or Washington to help Marcel Desjardins recover and regain the championship level competitive mindset.
