The B.C. Lions have released kicker Sergio Castillo.
Castillo led the CFL with a 91.1 field goal percentage, hitting 41-of-45 attempts. He was the West Division’s all-star kicker.
The 29-year-old played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2017 but tore his ACL that October in a 30-13 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, going down as he covered a missed field goal.
Castillo won the kicking job in Ticat training camp during the spring of 2017 after bouncing around the fringes of the CFL for three seasons. He made the most of it, hitting on 29-of-34 field goals (85.3 per cent) and going five-for-five from beyond the 50 yard line.
The Ticats released Castillo in February 2018. Ottawa brought Castillo in but he never kicked in a regular season game for the Redblacks.
Castillo has made 80-of-92 field goal attempts (87 per cent conversion rate) while going 55-for-60 on converts and punting 134 times for a 44.4-yard average in 38 career CFL games.
