Television viewers used their remote controls to vote and the polls declared the Redblacks and Argos game last week was indeed unwatchable.
Ottawa traveling to Toronto for their Week 18 matchup drew the lowest all-English rating of the 2019 season: 252,000.
Only two other games have come in under 300,000 this year to date. Montreal-Ottawa in Week 5 (277,200) and Montreal-Toronto in Week 11 (237,200). Combined with the French viewership from RDS, both of those contests would have been in excess of 300,000.
RDS has consistently been seeing over 100,000 viewers tune in for Als games in 2019 — ratings for the team in La Belle Province are up more than 30 percent — the French network’s best numbers since at least 2016. Montreal’s resurgence led by head coach Khari Jones and quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. are reasons for the TV boost.
Montreal’s division rivals Ottawa and Toronto have the two worst records in the league, which would turn people away from watching despite S.J. Green putting on a show throwing back to his prime. The Argos won 28-21 during the first game with Pinball Clemons as general manager.
Week 18 TV ratings:
Ottawa at Toronto — 252,500
Saskatchewan at Calgary — 763,100
Montreal at Winnipeg — 474,800
B.C. at Edmonton — 466,100
Week 18 average: 489,125
