McCoil ended the 2018 season on the Los Angeles Chargers practice roster. Prior to that he had been an NFL free agent since October 9, 2018 when the San Francisco 49ers released him from their practice roster. The 49ers claimed McCoil off waivers and he played in four games making eight tackles in 2017.
The 28-year-old was signed by the Chargers in January 2016. He played 18 games recording 26 tackles, defended five passes and intercepted another.
McCoil played two seasons for Edmonton. He made 144 tackles, intercepted nine passes and six sacks. After winning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie award in 2014, McCoil helped the Eskimos win the Grey Cup in 2015.
The versatile defender could have been a candidate to come back north of the border, but it seems he’ll keep trying his luck in the American version of football.
