Alouettes’ quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. and Blue Bombers’ linebacker Adam Bighill had a heated encounter during Montreal’s comeback victory.

Following an interception by Winnipeg defensive back Jeff Hecht, the CFL’s reigning Most Outstanding Defensive Player went to block Adams. The two engaged and locked in a physical battle.

As you can see, Adams Jr. pulls Bighill’s helmet off and appears to swing it at the star defender. The encounter drew a response on Twitter.

There was a penalty assessed on the play for general roughness, but it should have been an ejection. The outcome of the game could’ve changed had Adams Jr. been thrown out.

It’s a black mark on an outstanding comeback effort led largely by Adams. He threw for 488 yards and four touchdowns, leading his team on the largest comeback in Montreal’s franchise history.

The CFL has a mandate to protect quarterbacks, but other players on the field have a right to be kept safe as well. The act from Adams was malicious and should draw supplementary discipline from the league.
