The Toronto Argos have signed defensive back Jonathon Mincy.
The 27-year-old was with the Chicago Bears after being signed by the team in January of 2018 and staying on their practice roster for the entire season. He took part in training camp and the 2019 pre-season with the Bears recording 13 tackles and one pass deflection in four games before being part of Chicago’s final cuts.
Mincy played boundary corner for the Montreal Alouettes in 2017 where many of the best receivers in the CFL line up each week. He was targeted 6.2 times per game in 2017, allowing a 64 per cent completion rate and 42.3 yards per game, leading the league in those categories.
The 27-year-old played 32 games for the Alouettes in two seasons, making 108 tackles, three interceptions and forcing two fumbles. After the 2016 campaign, Mincy was named Montreal’s Most Outstanding Rookie and he was named an East Division all-star in 2017.
When Mincy came out of Auburn University he was signed as an undrafted NFL free agent by the Atlanta Falcons in 2015, but got released among final training camp cuts. He signed with Montreal in May 2016.
Current Argos general manager Jim Popp brought Mincy to the CFL with the Alouettes.
