June Jones and Johnny Manziel could be getting back together.

The XFL’s franchise in Houston, the Roughnecks, submitted their list of quarterbacks to the league.

“He’s probably on about five lists and was on one of mine,” Jones told Fox reporter Mark Berman.

Prior to the league’s draft, quarterbacks will be distributed to each team. The XFL will sign seven more quarterbacks – former NFLer Landry Jones has already inked his deal – before its inaugural player draft in October and each team’s head coach will select their quarterback.

When the Ticats were in negotiations to sign Manziel, the 66-year-old Jones went on record stating: “Manziel would be the best player to ever play up here.”

“He can throw it and he can run it like nobody has ever been able to do,” Jones said at the time.

Jeremiah Masoli opened the season with a hot hand, relegating Manziel to clipboard duty and the Ticats traded the celebrity QB to the Alouettes in a blockbuster deal as Montreal sent Canadian defensive end Jamaal Westerman, receiver Chris Williams and two first round draft picks to Hamilton.

Manziel became the Als starting quarterback, passing for 1,290 yards, five touchdowns versus seven interceptions and rushed 29 times for 215 yards. He finished the season 2-6 as Montreal’s starter.

The Alouettes were directed by the CFL in late February to release Manziel after it was found that he contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league. The CFL informed all of its member clubs that it would not register a contract for Manziel should any franchise attempt to sign him.

“We’re still evaluating that situation, Oliver [Luck] and the ownership of the league will ultimately make that decision. I had Johnny in Hamilton, I liked him and we’ve had a good relationship. But at the same time the league’s making decisions for what’s best for the league,” Jones said.

“He’ll go into the pool and anybody can draft him if he’s dedicated to the game and wants to give this a go again. I know that his name is definitely going to get into the player pool and probably go through the draft.”

Jones wanted Manziel in the CFL and the same could happen in the XFL.
