Ricky Ray could be wearing a headset in the future.
The surefire Hall of Famer has been shadowing Eskimos head coach Jason Maas. Ray and Maas played four seasons together in Edmonton from 2002-2005.
“I wanted to spend a couple days with Jason and learn from him a little bit,” Ray said.
Ray retired in May holding the individual record for Grey Cup wins as a starting quarterback with four, including two with the Eskimos (2003, 2005) and Argos (2012, 2017). The 2005 Grey Cup MVP has thrown the most touchdowns in the CFL title game with nine majors.
“I’m still trying to figure all that out and taking some time throughout this year. But definitely it’d be great to stay in football somehow and coaching would be something that I’d be very interested in doing,” Ray said.
Ray played nine seasons with the Eskimos between 2002-2012 and the final seven as an Argo. He is one of only four quarterbacks in CFL history to throw for over 60,000 yards while leaving the three-down game as the Eskimos and Argos all-time passing leader – Edmonton (40,531 yards) and Toronto (20,205 yards). Ray ranks number one in league history with a completion percentage of 68.2.
“Just learning as much as I can and that way if it’s something that I do want to do, I just got a little bit more experience doing it,” Ray said.
“So that’s why I’m up here just learning a little bit and maybe next year we’ll see.”
