Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols won’t play in the club’s pre-season opener on Friday.
“I just think that there’s… still quite a bit of evaluation to do further down the line on the quarterback position, so we want to give guys as much opportunity as possible. I don’t feel that Matt really needs that,” Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea said.
During 2018, Nichols’ numbers were down with 3,146 yards and just 18 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. Winnipeg finished 10-8, travelled to Regina for the West semifinal where the Bombers won while Nichols secured his first ever playoff victory as a starting quarterback in the CFL.
Chris Streveler has a season of experience after starting three games as a rookie in 2018 and he’ll start for Winnipeg against Edmonton.
“I expect him to start, how much he plays it really depends on the game flow,” O’Shea said.
Streveler was a respectable 1-2 as a starter completing 61 per cent of his passes for 11,34 yards, 11 touchdowns against five interceptions and rushing 77 times for 441 yards with 10 touchdowns.
Bryan Bennet, the third-string pivot last year, and Sean McGuire, the rookie from Western Illinois, are set to see a lot of action according to O’Shea as the two battle for the No. 3 QB spot.
