The Ottawa Redblacks have hired Joe Paopao as the team’s running backs coach.
Paopao was head coach of the Renegades from 2002-2005 and played quarterback for the Rough Riders in 1987.
“We feel very fortunate to add Joe to our coaching staff,” Redblacks head coach Rick Campbell said in a statement. “His wealth of knowledge and experience coaching and playing in the CFL will be a huge asset to our offence.”
After an 11-year playing career, Paopao became a CFL coach with stints as an offensive coordinator in B.C., Edmonton, Winnipeg and Hamilton. During four seasons as the bench boss in the nation’s capital, Paopao went 23-49 prior to the Renegades franchise folding.
The Redblacks have been searching for a new offensive coordinator since Jaime Elizondo resigned to take the same job with the Tampa Bay XFL franchise led by head coach and general manager Marc Trestman.
Paopao could help the transition to a new play-caller on offence.
