Hall of Fame CFL receiver and colourful TSN panel personality Milt Stegall has singled out one pass catcher as the current best in the game.

“If I had to I would say Derel Walker, he’s the best receiver in my opinion. Not only because of his route running, he’s not a big guy but he’s able to be physical, he’ll go up and get the ball,” Stegall said on 980 CJME The Green Zone.

Stegall had 10 seasons compiling 1,000 or more yards, named a CFL all-star nine times, won a CFL MOP award inn 2002, ranks second all-time in receiving yards with 15,123 and scored the most touchdowns ever by a single player 147.

Walker was highly sought during CFL free agency and reunited with former Edmonton Eskimos teammate James Franklin signing with the Toronto Argonauts for one-year in the $285,000 range.

“If he stays healthy this year I’m predicting 1,600 yards, 15 touchdowns, maybe 120-130 catches. That’s how good he is. There’s some good receivers throughout the league, but if you told me I had to start a team right now and I had to pick one receiver, it’s Derel Walker. It’s evident by the money that Toronto gave him,” Stegall said.

The 27-year-old played in 11 games last season – missing seven due to injury – and made 51 catches for 875 yards and eight touchdowns in 11 games. Walker finished second in CFL receiving yards during the 2016 season with 1,589 and a team-leading 10 touchdowns on 109 catches in 17 games. He had 1,110 yards and six touchdowns on 89 catches in just 12 games and was the league’s most outstanding rookie in 2015.

“There’s some other good ones out there but he does everything very well,” Stegall said. “He’s not the fastest, he’s not the quickest, he doesn’t have the best hands, he’s not the biggest, but he can do all those little things pretty much better than everyone else combined.”
