Redblacks’ Rose expecting to play in Grey Cup, but waiting for official word

Ottawa Redblacks Jonathan Rose discussed the incident that led to his one-game suspension for the first time as the team began Grey Cup practice.

Rose was handed a one-game suspension Tuesday for pushing an official during Ottawa’s East final win against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The 25-year-old immediately appealed his suspension and it is unlikely an arbitrator will be able to hear the case and make a decision before kickoff Sunday night against the Calgary Stampeders in Edmonton.

“Expecting to play still, just waiting until everything plays itself out. I’m not trying to speak too far in advance, so I’m just going to wait until everything’s set in stone. I didn’t want to be a distraction to my team or too much going on around this time and knock any other guys’ focus,” Rose said.

The 2018 CFL East Division all-star cover man was hoping by Friday he would know the status of the appeal but felt it would more likely be game day on Sunday.

“I don’t know anything about how the process goes, so that’s what I’m trying to let it play itself out,” Rose said.

“The circumstance happened until we figure everything out I don’t want to go into any further detail about it until everything is set in stone and everybody has their parts figured out.”

Rose was flagged for unnecessary roughness and ejected for contacting an official with 37 seconds left in the first half following a sideline melee after a Tiger-Cats reception.

“At the time there was a lot going on and I feel like depending on what view you want to take, you’re going to have your opinion on it,” Rose said.

“But at the same time right now I feel like we’ve got a good understanding between me, the commissioner and the CFLPA, so hopefully these guys can get it worked out.”

Rose addressed the incident with his teammates.

“I just told them I didn’t want to be a distraction and I would never do anything to jeopardize this team’s success,” Rose said.

“I just wanted them to know that it wasn’t anything personal and anything I wanted to do intentionally.”

Rose said he hasn’t yet spoken to the official involved, but he would like to.

“After all of this has concluded I’d like to speak to him and let him know how I feel about the situation.”
