USports Playoff Roundup: Western, Laval, Calgary hosting conference title games

LONDON, Ont. – The top-ranked Western Mustangs have moved one step closer to repeating as Vanier Cup champions.

Running back Cedric Joseph scored two touchdowns and Chris Merchant threw for a pair of majors as Western downed the Carleton Ravens 39-13 on Saturday in the Ontario University Athletics football semifinals.

The Mustangs, who went undefeated through the regular season, will host Guelph next week in the Yates Cup.

The Gryphons rallied for a 27-22 road victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the other OUA semifinal.

No. 6 Guelph scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Jonathan Cimankinda scored on a one-yard run and Thomas Bresciani caught a 59-yard TD pass from Theo Landers in the final 12 minutes.

Landers completed 8-of-12 passes for 128 yards, an interception and a TD.

The Mustangs topped the Laval Rouge et Or 39-17 in the 2017 Vanier Cup.

Western picked up right where it left off, leading all U Sports teams this season with 384 points scored over eight games. Laval (307) and third-ranked Calgary (352) were the only other teams to crack the 300-point barrier.

LAVAL, Que. – Laval had little trouble with Sherbrooke to earn a date in the Quebec final next week. The Rouge et Or finished the season 8-0, while Sherbrooke was 2-6. Laval had 441 yards of net offence, while Sherbooke had just 55.

MONTREAL – Dimitri Morand threw for two touchdowns as Montreal downed McGill in a battle of teams from the same city. Montreal will travel to Laval for next week’s Quebec final.

X-MEN 33 AXEMEN 10

ANTIGONISH, N.S. – St. FX downed Acadia to move on to the Atlantic University Sport football final. The X-Men will meet the Saint Mary’s Huskies next week in Halifax. Jordan Socholotiuk rushed for two touchdowns in the victory.

CALGARY – Unbeaten Calgary rolled to a Canada West semifinal win over Manitoba. Adam Sinagra threw for 368 yards and three touchdowns for the Dinos.

HUSKIES 31 THUNDERBIRDS 28 (OT)

VANCOUVER – Sean Stenger’s 38-yard field goal gave Saskatchewan the victory over UBC. Stenger’s kick ended it after the Thunderbirds missed a field goal to open OT. UBC quarterback Michael O’Connor passed for 435 yards in the loss. Saskatchewan travels to Calgary for next week’s Canada West final.
