Argos – finally – going back to James Franklin as starting QB

The Toronto Argonauts are making another quarterback change.

Head coach Marc Trestman said Tuesday that James Franklin will start Friday night when Toronto (3-11) hosts the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (7-7).

McLeod Bethel-Thompson completed 11-of-18 passes for 97 yards with one touchdown but four interceptions and he was benched after three quarters against B.C. in Week 17. Franklin came on and connected on 9-of-14 throws for 103 yards and two touchdowns in 15 minutes of action in the loss to the Lions, which ended any Argos post-season hopes.

Toronto began the season with veteran Ricky Ray under centre but looked to Franklin after Ray suffered a neck injury in a 41-7 home loss to Calgary on June 23. However after Franklin went 1-3 as the starter, the Argos promoted Bethel-Thompson to the No. 1 job and he’s gone 2-6 over his eight starts completing 65 per cent of his passes for 2,007 yards with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Franklin has completed 65 per cent of his passes for 1,073 yards with five touchdowns against six interceptions and brings a dual-threat ability to the position.

It’s back to Franklin for future purposes because Ray and Bethel-Thompson are pending free agents, however, the 27-year-old is signed through the 2019 season at a rate commensurate with a rising pivot. Toronto is clearly using their final four games to determine whether or not Franklin is worth keeping at the salary numbers that will go up next season.
