Leading CFL receiver, Eskimos’ Duke Williams leaves Bombers game with injury

Edmonton receiver Duke Williams exited the Eskimos blowout loss to Winnipeg and did not return.

Williams leads the CFL with 1,337 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He was injured on a hit from Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive back Marcus Sayles late in the fourth quarter. Mike Reilly’s go-to target would not discuss the injury after the game, but the quarterback did.

“That sucks. Duke’s out there – everybody is playing a little bit dinged up over the course of the season that’s how it is around the league when you play pro football,” Reilly said.

“But he’s out there giving us everything he has and takes a shot on a spot that probably already wasn’t feeling that great. Hopefully, he’ll be back quickly, hopefully, he doesn’t miss any time because that’s a guy you certainly want out there on the field.”

Head coach Jason Maas provided an update on his star receiver Monday.

“I don’t think it’s super severe. Whether he’ll go this week or not — right now we don’t know, but it’s definitely not severe enough to keep him out for the year. We’re going to still evaluate him” Maas said.

“No matter how much he’s hurt he wants to go and he’ll give you everything he’s got and he will play hurt. As long as he can run and protect himself, he’ll go. If Duke can run and he can catch he will play and deal with the pain that comes with that.”
