Slam Dunk picks: All hail the heavy hitters

Heavyweight favourites are across the betting board in Week 16 of the CFL schedule.

Full touchdowns are required for three squads to cover and the Stamps need two majors plus a rouge. There is value to be had so let’s get that money.

Toronto Argonauts (3-9) at Calgary Stampeders (10-2)
Friday, September 28, 9 p.m. EST

Calgary absolutely blew out Toronto at home in Week 2 and coming off a bye week plus paying at McMahon Stadium creates the recipe for a huge spread.

The Argos are out of the playoffs and they know it. Even though Duron Carter and Dexter McCluster will see increased reps Marc Trestman’s group is winless on the road.

The Stamps are undefeated at home in 2018 and know how important working towards clinching the West Division can be for their Grey Cup chances. Saddle up Calgary: an elite team rested and motivated.

Line: Stampeders favoured by 14.5 points
Pick: Calgary
Bet: $11 returns $10

B.C. Lions (6-6) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-7)
Saturday, September 29, 4 p.m. EST

B.C. changes time zones like Hamilton was forced to do in the Lions improbable comeback victory on the front end of the home-and-home set.

It was a one-score game for most of the game on the Left coast and the Ticats are dealing with some injuries in the trenches. Brandon Banks returns which should energize the offence, but laying a full touchdown against a Lions team that has played well in East road contests is tasty.

Line: Ticats favoured by 7 points
Pick: B.C.
Bet: $22 returns $20

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (6-7) at Edmonton Eskimos (7-6)
Saturday, September 29, 7 p.m. EST

The Bombers will give the game full attention because the crucial tiebreaker is on the line. Should Winnipeg want a shot at that important trump card a win is a must in Edmonton with a return visit occurring during the last week of the regular season.

Matt Nichols used the meeting against Montreal to raise his completion percentage and confidence level. But the Bombers have relied on the run game and Edmonton is susceptible when opposing teams consistently pound the rock. If Winnipeg can do that the Bombers are well worth taking the points.

Line: Eskimos favoured by 6.5 points
Pick: Winnipeg
Bet: $23 returns $20

Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-5) at Montreal Alouettes (3-10)
Sunday, September 30, 1 p.m. EST

Chris Jones is taking precaution and long road approach for the road trip to Montreal by leaving some players home. That could be smart down the line so the Riders are healthy for the playoffs, but it leaves Montreal in a more favourable spot compared to facing the full complement of the Riders roster. And La Belle Province hasn’t been kind to Saskatchewan when the Riders visit in recent years.

The Alouettes defence has been improved, but it’s hard to be left hanging out on the field so long each game because of the inability for the offence to sustain drives. Johnny Manziel has to throw a touchdown at some point.

Line: Riders favoured by 6.5 points
Pick: Montreal
Bet: $22 returns $20

Season record against the spread: 24-20-2

Money line: 3-3
Teasers: 2-1
Over/under: 0-1
