Slam Dunk picks: Let’s see who’s for real

Short home favourites jump out on the Week 11 slate.

The Ticats and Lions appear to be in favourable positions to cover in familiar territory. Each visiting opponent enters the doughnut box and Lions lair trying to carry momentum from victories in their own backyard a week ago. Edmonton beat the hapless Alouettes and Saskatchewan put it on Calgary for the Stampeders first loss in 2018.

Let’s get to the action.

Edmonton Eskimos (6-3) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-5)
Thursday, August 23, 7:30 p.m. EST

If Mike Reilly can go through the emotional rigours of having his second child, prepare, travel on a short week and put it on Hamilton consider the reigning MOP a superhero.

Edmonton is back to using four American receivers as Vidal Hazelton returns to the starting lineup. But Hamilton counters with elite cover man Delvin Breaux healthy and back to lock down whoever lines up at the boundary receiver spot.

Hamilton had a bye week to prepare and should be ready to unleash some new looks, especially defensively. Jerry Glanville has been creative and he’ll see increased pressure from blitzing has caused the Eskimos trouble in recent games.

The best passing offence in the league meets the CFL’s stingiest air yards unit. Under the circumstances: Oskee Wee Wee.

Line: Ticats favoured by 3 points
Pick: Hamilton
Bet: $22 spread returns $20

Toronto Argonauts (3-5) at Montreal Alouettes (1-8)
Friday, August 24, 7:30 p.m. EST

The Argos have three wins which came by a combined five points, so laying points seems like a fools play.

Montreal has been a mess, but Antonio Pipkin flashed promise in his first CFL start and if the Alouettes have any hope at – dare it to be said – making the playoffs winning against divisional opponents has to happen soon or it’s game over.

Line: Argos favoured by 5.5 points
Pick: Montreal
Bet: $11 spread returns $10

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-4) at Calgary Stampeders (7-1)
Saturday, August 25, 3:30 p.m. EST

Both Winnipeg and Calgary suffered disappointing defeats in Week 10. The Bombers were carved up by Trevor Harris and the Stamps undefeated run stopped emphatically by Saskatchewan.

Normally taking Calgary off a loss would be an easy choice, but the visitors are highly motivated as Winnipeg wants to prove the loss to the Redblacks was a blip and the club can compete with the league’s best.

Line: Stampeders favoured by 8.5 points
Pick: Winnipeg
Bet: $11 spread returns $10

Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-4) at B.C. Lions (3-5)
Saturday, August 24, 10 p.m. EST

Saskatchewan was in a frenzy planning the Grey Cup parade after Chris Jones – in his green shirt – guided the Riders to a resounding win in handing Calgary it’s first loss of 2018. All the focus is on the green machine becoming legitimate Grey Cup contenders, but it’s one game.

B.C. has handled Winnipeg and Edmonton at home since Travis Lulay took over at quarterback, two Western foes higher in the standings the Lions are chasing for a playoff spot. You get the vibe.

Line: Lions favoured by 2.5 points
Pick: B.C.
Bet: $12 spread returns $10

Season record against the spread: 14-14-2

Money line: 2-3

Teasers: 2-1

Over/under: 0-1
