Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols goes down with injury in practice

Winnipeg Blue Bomber quarterback Matt Nichols suffered an injury in practice on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old is coming off his best season in the CFL throwing for 4,472 yards and 28 touchdowns. The team signed veteran Darian Durant as insurance in January but he retired before the season, taking $70,000 of the team’s cap money with him.

Chris Streveler was impressive in the team’s 33-13 win over Edmonton last Friday, completing all 10 pass attempts, including an 80-yard touchdown strike but he’s hardly a proven commodity. Alex Ross, who signed this winter after being released by B.C., was 1 for 8 for eight yards against the Esks.

So yeah, it’s pretty much the worst-case scenario for the Bombers if Nichols is out for an extended period of time.

UPDATE: The first couple of what’s likely to be several updates on Nichols’s condition.

Nichols is well liked around the CFL and players and media types are clearly hoping for the best….
