Play-by-play: Johnny Manziel plays first CFL game

Johnny Manziel made his CFL debut on Friday night in Hamilton against the Toronto Argonauts.

Manziel entered the game with two minutes and 49 seconds left in the second quarter and the Ticats trailing 13-6. Here’s what he did:

Drive one:

• Ball in the middle of the field, first and 10, 19-yard line, Manziel quick out throw to the right side of the field to Jalen Saunders for a nine-yard gain.

• Ball on the right hash, second and one, Manziel escapes a sack from Johnny Sears who came free off the edge, he scrambles to his left and hits Felix Faubert-Lussier for 11 yards and a first down.

• Ball on the left hash, first and 10, 40-yard line, Manziel quick set and throw to Faubert-Lussier in the right flat on a timing out route for a gain of seven – fast read and release.

• Ball on the left hash, second and three, 47-yard line, Manziel hands off to running back Mercer Timmis, zone read and Timmis stacked up after one yard.

• Ball on the left hash, third and two, Manziel tries to escape the pocket and gets sacked for a loss of four yards and turns it over on downs.

Drive two:

• Ball close to the right hash, first and 10, Manziel bobbles the snap but still gets it out to Harvey Binford on a receiver screen, but he drops the pass.

• Ball close to the right hash, second and 10, Manziel drops in the pocket and finds Rashad Lawrence who catches the ball for a gain of eight yards but then fumbles it away.

Drive three:

• Ball on the right hash, first and 10, Manziel hands it off to Timmis for a two-yard gain. Manziel was jogging off the field because he thought the clock runs like in the NFL, but realized and came back for the last snap.

• Ball on the right hash, Manziel keeps on a zone read and gains eight yards for a first down. End of the half.

Manziel first half statistics: 4-of-5 passing for 35 yards, one carry for eight yards and one sack.

Third quarter, drive four:

Ball on the right hash at Hamiltons 13-yard line, first and 10, Manziel looks right then left in the pocket, comes back right and throws the ball out of bounds as he’s falling to the ground, avoiding a near sack.

Ball on the right hash, second and 10, Manziel looks to the strong side of the field and zips it to Binford on a curl route for a gain of six. Ticats punt.

Drive five:

Ball on the right hash at the 29-yard line, first and 10, Manziel hands off to Storm Johnson for a four-yard gain.

Ball on the right hash, second and seven, Manziel forced to call a timeout before the Ticats break the huddle.

Ball on the right hash, second and seven, Manziel quick drop and throw to Lawrence for a six-yard gain and first down.

Ball on the left hash, first and 10, Manziel escapes the pocket to the right, on the run spots Damarr Aultman for a 21-yard gain.

Ball on the right hash, first and 10, Manziel hands off to Johnson who cuts it back for a gain of 15 yards.

Ball on the left hash, first and 10, Manziel keeps it off zone read and is stopped after a gain of two yards.

Ball on the right hash, second and eight, Manziel long throw to the wide side, Chris Hubert reaches back behind him to make the catch for a gain of seven yards.

Ball on the left hash, third and one, Manziel from the shotgun rolls right under pressure, throws spot on to the sideline and Aultman hauls it in for a four-yard gain and a first down.

Ball on the right hash, first and 10, Manziel hands off to Johnson for a gain of four yards.

Ball in the middle of the field, second and six, Manziel hands off to Johnson for a gain six yards and a first down.

Ball on the right hash, first and 10, Manziel looks right for a pump-and-go but its not there so he scrambles to his left and throws it away. The officials call a surprising intentional grounding penalty.

Ball on the left hash, Manziel hands off to Johnson for a gain of 19 yards.

Ball on the left hash, third and 13, low snap for Manziel who picks it up and scrambles and just gets tripped up by Trumaine Washington for a sack.

Manziel final statistics: 9-of-11 passing for 80 yards, two carries for eight yards and two sacks.
