CFL free agent rankings: Quarterbacks

As we approach the opening of CFL free agency on Tue., Feb. 13, 3DownNation’s Justin Dunk, Drew Edwards and John Hodge are ranking every player potentially available by position. Check out the podcast below for the reasoning behind their decisions. Up first, the quarterbacks.

1. Ricky Ray, TOR
Age: 38
Starts in 2017: 17
Key stats: 5,546 yards, 28 TDs, 71% completion
Notes: If he doesn’t retire after winning the Grey Cup in January, the expectation is he’ll return to Toronto.

B.C. Lions’ quarterback Travis Lulay gives fans a thumbs-up as he’s driven to the dressing room after leaving the game with an injury during the first half of a CFL football game against the Montreal Alouettes in Vancouver, B.C., on Friday September 8, 2017. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck

2. Travis Lulay, BC
Age: 34
Starts in 2017: 4
Key stats: 1,693 yards, 10 TDs, 73% completion
Notes: Suffered a torn ACL last September so likely won’t be ready until Labour Day. Family settled on the West Coast, strong connections to the Lions franchise.

3. Drew Willy, MTL
Age: 31
Starts in 2017: 2
Key stats: 537 yards, 1 TD, 68% completion
Notes: Saw limited action during Montreal’s gong-show season and is no longer considered a bona-fide CFL starter but is still likely the best option for a team looking for a veteran back up.

4. Cody Fajardo, TOR
Age: 25
Starts in 2017: 0
Key stats: 154 yards, 2 TDs, 60% completion
Notes: Backed up behind Ray this season but didn’t get the start when he got hurt (it went to Jeff Mathews.) Still just 25, he’s got a season under Scott Milanovich and another under Marc Trestman, both known as QB whisperers and will land somewhere.

5. Dan LeFevour, WIN
Age: 30
Starts in 2017: 1
Key stats: 171 yards, 6 rushing TDs, 61.8% completion
Notes: Won a game over Calgary late in the season with just 91 yards passing and is useful as a short-yardage guy. Five years of CFL experience and some starts along the way.

6. Everett Golson, HAM
Age: 25
Starts in 2017: 0
Key stats: 25 yards on a perfect 4-for-4, 5 yards on one carry
Notes: Golson might have been the Ticats short-yardage guy had he not been injured in the pre-season. Just 25 and a Notre Dame alum, Golson will attract interest as a guy with some CFL potential.

7. Jacory Harris, MTL
Age: 27
Starts in 2017: 0
Key stats: 8 GPs.
Notes: Another lost season for Harris who has seen limited opportunities in five CFL seasons. Could be at the end of the road.
