Bombers QB Matt Nichols on Johnny Manziel: back it up on the field

Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols believes Johnny Manziel should be more focused on playing football than making absurd contract asks.

“You can demand all you want. I’d be less worried about trying to get paid like a top-tier starter and more worried about seeing the field. He’s going to have to back it up on the field or he’ll be out of the league as quickly as he’s in it,” Nichols told 680 CJOB in Winnipeg.

The Manziel saga has played out for more than five months since agent Erik Burkhardt activated the 10-day clause in September.

“I just want him to get signed or not signed, get it over with, because it’s kind of like spam on my Twitter feed,” Nichols said.

Presumptive Ticats starter Jeremiah Masoli and Nichols spent one season together in Edmonton in 2012. Masoli threw for 3,177 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing over 63 per cent of his passes going 6-4 as a starter in 2017, which earned him a two-year extension in Hamilton.

“Masoli has paid his dues, he’s earned that job,” Nichols said.

“I’ve been in the league for eight years now, and anyone that’s trying to use the CFL to come up, play and go back to the NFL, I’ve never seen that work out one time. Usually, it’s the guys that come up, embrace it, ball out for a couple of years, they can get another shot down there.”
