RB Shakir Bell signs with Riders

American running back Shakir Bell has signed with the Riders, per sources.

The 25-year-old’s deal is for the remainder of the 2017 season. Bell was released by Ottawa in June.

He broke into the league with Edmonton and spent two years with the Eskimos (2015 and 2016) rushing for 1,058 yards and two touchdowns while making 34 catches for 312 yards and two touchdowns over two seasons and 15 games.

Bell had a workout with the New England Patriots last December, but no contract was offered by the reigning Super Bowl champions.

Saskatchewan head coach and general manager Chris Jones was in Edmonton for one season with Bell in 2015. Meanwhile, Trent Richardson has been put on the one-game injured list by the Riders.
