USports Football Round Up: Western wraps up No. 1 seed in OUA

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Jarett Saumure kicked a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter to lift the Acadia Axemen over the Bishop’s Gaiters 27-24 on Saturday in Canadian university football action.

Saumure connected on field goals from 10 and 21 yards in the final five minutes of play for Acadia (4-2), finishing the day with three field goals and one convert. Quarterback Cody Cluett completed 24-for-38 pass attempts for 291 yards and a touchdown.

QB Stephen Casey was the focal point of Bishop’s (1-4) offence. He completed 17-of-37 pass attempts with one interception for 301 yards.

Casey also led the Gaiters’ rushing attack, carrying the ball seven times for 72 yards.


SACKVILLE, N.B. – Troy Downton threw two touchdown passes to Jared Rawlings as Mount Allison (2-4) downed St. FX (2-4).


SHERBROOKE, Que. – Quarterback Hugo Richard rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 3 Laval (5-1) over Sherbrooke (1-5).

LONDON, Ont. – Chris Merchant threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns as the No. 4 Western Mustangs crushed the Carleton Ravens 51-14 on Friday night in U Sports football action.

The win secured Western (7-0) top spot in the Ontario University Athletics conference standings. The Mustangs will receive a bye into the conference semifinals and have home-field advantage throughout the post-season.

Merchant finished 20 of 34 and was intercepted twice.

Alex Taylor ran for 142 yards on 15 carries with one touchdown. It’s his third consecutive 100-plus yard game. He also caught four passes for 50 yards and one score. Cedric Joseph added two rushing TDs after carrying the ball 10 times for 81 yards.

Michael Arruda completed 17-of-31 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown for Carleton (2-4).

KINGSTON, Ont. – Jake Puskas ran for two touchdowns and caught two more to lead the Queen’s Gaels past the Waterloo Warriors 68-17 on Thursday night in U Sports football action.

Puskas ran for 175 yards on 22 carries and also caught two passes for 58 yards for Queen’s (2-4). It’s Puskas’s third straight 100-plus yard rushing game.

Gaels quarterback Nate Hobbs threw four TDs and was 23 of 30 for 379 yards.

Chris Osei-Kusi led all Gaels receivers with 10 receptions for 111 yards and a TD. Alex Zulys had the other touchdown reception.

Lucas McConnell completed 7-of-16 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown for Waterloo (4-3).


TORONTO – Michael Knevel was 21 of 29 for 431 yards and threw five touchdowns – including two to Brentyn Hall – as Laurier (5-1) downed York (1-5).


TORONTO – Jackson White was 25 of 32 for 345 yards and a touchdown and Justice Allin caught six passes for 137 yards and a TD as No. 6 McMaster (5-1) routed the Varsity Blues (1-5).
