USports Football Round Up: Canadian university season gets underway

The USports season got started this past weekend and here’s a look at the action from around the country.

MUSTANGS 66 LIONS 3
TORONTO – Chris Merchant threw for two touchdown passes and Cedric Joseph ran in two scores as the Western Mustangs began their U Sports football season on Sunday with a 66-3 rout of the York Lions. Merchant completed 11-of-23 passes for 221 yards and was intercepted once. Stevenson Bone threw for another 151 yards on 4-for-4 passing with one touchdown. Receiver Brett Ellerman caught two touchdown passes and Malik Besseghieur had the other for Western (1-0). Bone contributed with a rushing touchdown, Cole Majoroa ran a punt return in for a score and Bleaka Kabamba turned an interception into a TD. York (0-1) quarterback Brett Hunchak threw for 176 yards and was intercepted twice.

GUELPH, Ont. – Lewis Ward’s 28-yard field goal on the final play of double overtime gave Ottawa (1-0) a win over the Gryphons (0-1).

WATERLOO, Ont. – Michael Knevel threw for 341 yards and a touchdown as Laurier (1-0) blanked Toronto (0-1).

WARRIORS 54 LANCERS 33
WINDSOR, Ont. – Lucas McConnell overcame two interceptions, throwing for 113 yards and three touchdowns to help lead Waterloo (1-0) over the Lancers (0-1).

ROUGE ET OR 40 VERT ER OR 5
QUEBEC – Hugo Richard threw three touchdowns and ran in another as the Laval Rouge et Or began their Vanier Cup defence with a 40-5 win over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or on Saturday in U Sports football action. Richard, the 2016 Vanier Cup MVP, was 29 of 41 for 361 yards and no interceptions. He also carried the ball nine times for 49 yards. Etienne Moisan, Alex Savard and Vincent Alarie-Tardif caught touchdown passes for the Rouge et Or (1-0). David Cote converted on all three field-goal attempts. Kicker Mathieu Hebert scored all five points for Sherbrooke (0-1) with one field goal and two rouges. Quarterback Alex Jacob-Michaud completed 19-of-35 passes for 204 yards and two interceptions.B Laval won its ninth Vanier Cup last November in Hamilton with a victory over the Calgary Dinos.

SACKVILLE, N.B. – Jakob Loucks threw three touchdowns and Chris Reid rushed for three TDs as Mount Allison (1-0) crushed Acadia (0-1).

KINGSTON, Ont. – Quarterback Michael Arruda ran the ball in from one yard out with 18 second left in the fourth quarter as Carleton (1-0) got past Queen’s (0-1).

HUSKIES 38 X-MEN 23
HALIFAX – Kaleb Scott threw a pair of touchdowns as the Saint Mary’s Huskies opened the U Sports football season with a 38-23 victory over the StFX X-Men on Friday night. Scott was 26-for-47 passing for 367 yards and an interception while also running the ball eight times for 86 yards. Archelaus Jack caught five passes for 135 yards and a touchdown and Josh Henry had the other TD for the Huskies (1-0). Saint Mary’s Brian Hope converted on 4 of 6 field goals and Antoine Lyte-Myers had a pair of interceptions that including taking one back for a touchdown. Jordan Socholotiuk led the X-Men (0-1) offence with 30 carries for 171 yards and a TD. StFX has won the Atlantic University Sport conference the last two seasons.

MONTREAL – Samuel Caron threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns as the Carabins (1-0) downed Concordia (0-1).
