Riders release DL Jonathan Newsome

The Riders let American defensive lineman Jonathan Newsome go on Tuesday.

Newsome did not play in Week 1, but he suited up in Week 2 against Winnipeg and recorded one tackle and an interception.

The 26-year-old played in 18 games last season for Saskatchewan, making 27 defensive tackles, six special teams tackles and two sacks.

He originally signed with the Riders in May 2016 and inked an extension with Saskatchewan in January that was supposed to carry through until the 2018 campaign.

Jones was asked why Newsome received a pink slip.

“In pro football sometimes things are viewed differently and unfortunately we had a few views that we viewed a little differently. So it was in the best interest of both parties that we part ways. That’s between me and Jonathan. He and I had views that were a little bit different.”

This might just be a coincidence but Newsome was released days after he “liked” a Tweet that had video of a Chris Jones impersonator.
