Former Saskatchewan Roughriders running back Joe McKnight, who was fatally shot in New Orleans last month, will be honoured by his alma mater when the University of Southern California takes on Penn State University in Monday’s Rose Bowl.
Each Trojan player will have a decal on their helmet that reads “JM4” McKnight’s initials as well as the number he wore at USC.
McKnight was rated the No. 1 running back recruit in the U.S. when he came out of Louisiana in 2006 and signed with the University of Southern California. He played 36 games over three seasons, amassing 347 carries for 2,213 yards and 13 touchdowns.
McKnight was shot Dec. 1 in an alleged road rage incident. Ronald Gasser, 54, has been charged with manslaughter in McKnight’s death.
McKnight was signed to Saskatchewan’s practice roster on Sept. 26, and he ran for 150 yards in his first CFL start on Oct. 15 as the Roughriders beat Toronto 29-11. He finished the 2016 season with 228 rushing yards and 80 receiving yards over five games with Edmonton and Saskatchewan.
