Riders narrowing focus as CFL draft looms

With time counting down before the start of the 2016 CFL Draft, there are a number of scenarios still in play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ first overall selection.

Sources say the team has narrowed their focus to three players, including offensive linemen Josiah St. John and Charles Vaillancourt. The Riders have discussed contract terms with both players in hopes of securing a deal before they make the pick at 7 p.m. EST.

The third player in the mix is linebacker Alex Singleton but he has received a late contract offer after attending the New England Patriots rookie mini-camp last weekend. Singleton’s camp is discussing their options. “If he signs, that could dramatically affect this draft,” a source said.

Trading the pick also remains a possibility. A source says the team is hoping interest will spike at the 11th hour, saying “things will begin to heat up.”
