For the second time in as many seasons, the Ticats are getting a new radio play-by-play man — and they may be getting an entirely new broadcast crew.
TSN1150 announced via Twitter last week that Andy McNamara would not be returning to the booth for the 2016 campaign and station general manager Bob Harris said in an email on Tuesday that no decision has been made on the future of colour commentator John “Coach Sal” Salvantis.
“We’re evaluating opportunities in both roles, but at this time there are no front runners,” Harris said.
McNamara replaced long-time play-by-play man Rick Zamperin when the team’s radio broadcast rights were sold to the new TSN1150 last spring after almost 50 years with CHML. A regular on TSN radio’s Toronto affiliate, 2015 was McNamara’s first time calling pro football.
Thanks guys, had a blast!” McNamara tweeted after the news was announced. “Go #Ticats!”
Salavantis said Tuesday that he would like to continue in the role he has held since 1993 but he has not been contacted by anyone from TSN about his future.
“I’d be disappointed, very much so,” said Salavantis, who also served as an assistant couch with the club from 1985 to 1990. “I want to do it but it’s up to them whether they want me to do it.”
