Charges stayed against former Rider Taj Smith

A charge of aggravated assault against former Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Taj Smith has been stayed.

The judge agreed Thursday to the Crown’s request for a stay of proceedings in the case.

The charge arose after a fight outside a Regina nightclub in August 2013.

Charges against two other former players, Dwight Anderson and Eron Riley, were dropped early in the proceedings.

Smith was released by the Riders in December after playing only three games in the 2015 season.

A stayed charge can be brought back within a year, but it’s rare.
