Update from Ticats practice: Grant looks good to go

It’s the third and final day of Ticats’ practice before Friday’s season-opener against the Calgary Stampeders. Here’s what’s happening.

• receiver Bakari Grant, who missed practice earlier this week, was at the Mac field before his teammates this morning getting a little extra work in. He practiced fully today and took reps with the first team offence and that means it’s virtually certain he’ll play Friday.

• with Luke Tasker and Kyle Miller both hurt, look for Matt Coates to hold for kicker Justin Medlock on field goals and point after attempts. Coates has worked with Medlock, on and off, since last season and has spent much of this week getting extra work in after practice.

• TSN released it’s list of the Top-50 CFL players last night. The Ticats placed six players on the list. No. 10 Brandon Banks, No. 11 Zach Collaros, No. 25 Eric Norwood, No. 37 Ted Laurent, No. 38 Simoni Lawrence, No. 46 Luke Tasker.

This list is always a source of great debate and I appreciate it as a talking point, something that generates interest in the league. But it doesn’t take into consideration things like ratio and, generally speaking, undervalues defensive players. For example, Laurent is far more valuable than No. 37 given his level of play and birth certificate.

More later.
