The Toronto Argonauts added some insurance at the quarterback position on Saturday by signing former Montreal pivot Adrian McPherson.
The 32-year-old native of Bradenton, Fla., spent five seasons with the Alouettes from 2008 through 2012. He won Grey Cup rings in 2009 and ’10.
McPherson served mostly as the backup behind Anthony Calvillo, completing 145 of 247 passes for 1,505 yards with 10 TDs and six interceptions during his time with the Alouettes. He also rushed for 1,035 yards on 218 attempts, scoring 20 touchdowns.
The Alouettes released him to pursue other offers and he joined Tampa Bay of the Arena Football League in 2013. He appeared in 13 games for the Storm and completed 238 of 385 passes for 3,151 yards and 59 touchdowns with five interceptions.
McPherson signed with Calgary in January 2014 but suffered an injury before training camp and never played for the Stampeders.
It’s unclear whether Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray will be ready for the team’s regular-season opener June 27 against Edmonton. He underwent shoulder surgery in the off-season.
Fourth-year pro Trevor Harris is expected to serve as the starter if Ray is out.
