Riders officially sign former Redblacks, Lions DB Loucheiz Purifoy

Defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy is headed to Saskatchewan.

He was released by the Ottawa Redblacks on Monday.

Purifoy signed with the Redblacks as a free agent in February. He made 29 tackles, one interception and forced one fumble in seven games with the Redblacks.

The 25-year-old played two seasons with the B.C. Lions where he recorded 92 defensive tackles, five sacks, forced four fumbles and recorded four interceptions while playing 36 games in 2016 and 2017.

Purifoy is a versatile piece on the backend.

    LOL

  2. Will they switch him to receiver?

  3. GreenInCalgary // August 7, 2018 at 3:55 pm //

This should add some depth and contrary to what you think ExPat should help to keep DC at receiver. Not sure Joe why you think this is funny as this guy is a young, proven player.

I thought Purifoy was around the ball a lot during his last game, so was surprised he was cut loose. This signing will make a strong defence that much stronger.

  4. Excellent signing, this will keep Carter on offense and strengthen an already very good Riders defence.

I guess it will help for the international side. The riders are thin on the national side. That is why it was bad losing Messam. I have not heard anything about Dakota Shapley he does not have a number on there roster yet. He might help on the online

    • There’s an odd comment. Where do you think the Riders are thin on national players?

    • Jeff Garcia's Agent // August 7, 2018 at 5:10 pm //

Messam never really helped with the ratio. Riders can package Moore, Stanford or Bailey instead and the team is better with Thigpen/Mason in the backfield than they were with Messam.

Messam looked like a pallet of bricks being dragged across the field. He was averaging a team low 3.9 YPC and is the only RB without multiple 20 yard rushes. Messam didn’t even have one. Not only that, his pass blocking sucked. While I was admittedly one of the people that thought his signing in the offseason was a good one, he clearly is over the hill and these charges will be how his career ends. Riders are better off in multiple ways without him(playing time for Thig/Tre, cap space cleared allowed for Collaros to come back).

      • We put Awachi on the roster last week as well to keep our ratio up. He’s a big boy, wouldn’t mind seeing him used for short yardage to either block or run.

I haven’t seen any word on WHY the Redblacks released him. Maybe his contract was too much and the feeling was that the next man up is just as good? I guess we’ll see Saturday.

After umpteen try-out camps during the offseason Jones finally found a DB. That’s a real compliment to his recruitment abilities and connections.

    • You really don’t follow the team much do you. Our whole secondary was recruited or acquired by Jones one way or another, and it’s one of the best secondaries in one the best defences in the league. So yeah, Jones has outstanding player acquisition abilities.

  8. According to Marcel Desjardins, not a good fit with both on-field as well as off-field issues that weren’t getting better. That said, I thought he was the best of the DBS in Ottawa. But, sounds like a match made in heaven in sask.

    • Purifoy is a very talented player, but it’s becoming clear that he has some off field issues. Jones is a bit of a horse whisperer, as we have seen in recent years, and he may think that he can work with him.

  9. MR. Green // August 7, 2018 at 5:40 pm //

Adding experienced DB depth is always a good thing. Some coaches I guess aren’t versatile enough to get what they need out of certain players. Chris Jones can. He also can see talent and turn them into good players when others fail, even making offensive players good defensive players. Purifoy is in the right place to become a better DB.

  10. On a positive note everyone. Talk about a scary good defensive backfield we have. Only gets better as the season rolls on. With Zach attack back and an extra week to work with receivers our offense will be improving quite a bit once back from the Bi week. He took that extra press that Bridge faltered at and used the proper reads to check down with. Much better offense with him back there.

  11. When I watched Purifoy play in BC he caught my attention. Too me he looked like a baller. I believe he wore number 0 which looked dumb. But the dude has wheels!

Remember…We said Que C Jones!!!as soon as Purifoy was cut by RB and sure enough he got Murphy right on that!!!
WHAT a desperate team Jones has in Sliderville…

  13. White Horse // August 7, 2018 at 7:39 pm //

Purifoy wasn’t good enough to stick in BC or Ottawa. I would say the shoe fits perfectly in Sliderville!!!

    • Thank you for your continued support of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

      • Historic McMahon // August 7, 2018 at 10:10 pm //

He will fit right into sliderville , unfortunately for him there’s no plan , maybe jones can get him a good rate at the holiday inn

If you did your homework and had any interest in the facts or truth you would have learned that Purifoy was a highly regarded free agent this past off season sought after by a number of teams. He was good enough for B.C. and his stats make that clear. I suppose that you haven’t read them or understood them. You have no idea why he didn’t re-sign in B.C. You also have no idea why Ottawa released him, but it could be salary cap driven for example or a personality conflict. You however, will likely continue to tell lies and spew out your venomous hatred and anger towards the Riders.

  14. Ride the horse // August 7, 2018 at 8:35 pm //

The Saskatchewan roughriders, the team the other 8 GMs built!

    • GreenInCalgary // August 7, 2018 at 8:48 pm //

Why don’t you look at the Rider roster and try to justify your newest lie and while you are doing it compare it with the rosters of the other 8 teams for comparison purposes.

      • Ride the horse // August 7, 2018 at 8:50 pm //

Your secondary is full of players from other teams

        • GreenInCalgary // August 7, 2018 at 9:08 pm //

First you said the whole team was built by other GMs, now you appear to be saying that it is just the secondary. This is typical of your previous inconsistent and shifting positions. Are you too lazy to do the actual work that is necessary to validate your comments? Have you noticed that in the last few years, players and teams gave been primarily signing one year contracts and players have been changing teams and vice versa at an unprecedented rate, so that all rosters have many players that previously played for other teams.

          • GreenInCalgary // August 7, 2018 at 9:23 pm //

Did you know that 3 of the DBs on the Stamps depth chart for the B.C. game previously played for other CFL teams?

          • And a D lineman (Ese Mrabure) that came from the club he clearly supports.

          • Riding the Horse // August 7, 2018 at 10:00 pm //

I never said your WHOLE team was built by the 8 other GM’s at all.
But if you want me to go on fine.
            Hughes, Jefferson, Hurl, Labatte, Carter
all your secondary are from else where, 1 linebacker, 2 lineman. That’s 8 of 12 starters from other teams.
On offence there are at least the 2 I mentioned. THAT’S 10 OF 24 STARTERS YOU GOT ELSEWHERE. I could go into the backups now if you want

          • Thanks for keeping so informed on the Rider Organization. A true supporter, through and through!

          • On a side note Rider friend. You will find that most football players have in fact played for another team. Enjoy your night, and thank you for the continued support.

        • MR. Green // August 7, 2018 at 10:12 pm //

The only starting DB who never started thier CFL career in Sask is Gainey. You know nothing esmerelda.

          • MR. Green // August 7, 2018 at 10:18 pm //

We have no LB who plays real minutes from other teams. Top 5 all started here, Euguavan, Momcrief, Elam, Judge and Hurl all began here.
DB, Johnson, Marshall and Butler, all started thier CFL careers here.
            Smarten up Missy.

        • as is every team in the league

    • The Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club does appreciate your constant, albeit over the top support.

All Riders, All The Time, Rider friend!!

  15. bill dehoog // August 7, 2018 at 9:37 pm //

He was released due to off field issues
    Not performance or salary issues

  16. Good signing Ill take it. On the Red note, learned to take him with a grain of salt, and he’s become mildly entertaining. At the end of the day, the Riders entertain him.

  17. Rick Cowan // August 7, 2018 at 9:52 pm //

He will help the Rider’s big time

  18. Riding the Horse // August 7, 2018 at 11:08 pm //

    @ Greenincalgary
OH??????? 3 starting Calgary DB came from BC?
    Please name them.!!!

@Mr Green… you point out players I had wrong… but of course you fail to mention I forgot your QB and Brooks!
Johnson, Hurl, Evans Thigpen, may have started with riders but really became great players on other CFL teams.

  19. If any of you did your homework, you would know that Purifoy went undrafted in the 2014 NFL draft because of off field issues and a narcotics charge in 2013, along with another narcotics issues where he cooperated with the police so wasn’t charged. He was picked up by the Colts where he had a strong rookie season but was released late in the year. The Seahawks picked him up but he failed his physical. While he was a free agent, the NFL gave Purifoy a ten game suspension for drug violations. He signed in BC where he played well. He was not eligible for a rookie nomination because he had played games in the NFL. When his contract was up, BC chose not to resign him. He signed a one year contract with Ottawa but was now released with their GM stating that there are both on field and off field issues and it is better for the team to release him. It apparently is not because of his play but because he is not a team player and is not good in the locker room. So once again, Chris Jones signs a bad boy, a player with talent but brings with him some issues and some baggage.

  20. Riders have some injuries at Sam. Purifoy started off playing there in BC before moving to safety and then to CB this season. Fast and talented player. Not sure if rumours are true about off field issues but the guy can play.

  21. First order of business for Purifoy is to go visit Collaros in the Rider infirmary (or wait, is he out now?) and apologize for absolutely pummelling him on the second play from scrimmage on a Safety Blitz re Tiger Cats at Lions – August 13, 2016…the return of the Great Collaros. Of course the Great Collaros fumbled the ball, Lion’s recovered…and that set the tone of the game. And as per usual, the Great Collaros had a chance to win the game…ball in his hands…seconds winding down…but choked …opting to throw into triple coverage instead of passing it to a wide open CJ Gable, literally staring right at him, wide open in the flat. The Great Collaros of course proceeded to further choke in the ESF crossover, tossing an Interception in the final 2 minutes vs Edmonton…enabling the Esks to kick a FG for the winning points. Ironic that John White totally killed the TC’s D in that one…gobbled up almost 200 yards on the ground…but has done SFA since…and is presently on the TC’s roster…LOL!

  22. Get real // August 8, 2018 at 9:07 am //

Why are Rider fans so scared to face the fact that everyone that Jones signs is not a golden boy? Quite the opposite. He is not afraid to take on talented guys with issues. Some work well for him, some not so much. Right now, the fact is that Purifoy comes with baggage. At this point, he has not stuck with any team long term because of off field issues. Those are not just rumours. They are fact. Jones is obviously prepared to take a chance on him. It doesn’t matter what team I cheer for, which is not Calgary. That doesn’t change the fact that Purifoy has had issues, both legal, all the way back to college days, and with the NFL drug policy, along with attitude issues. Jones apparently believes he can control him. Some Rider fans seem to have some issues themselves admitting that everyone associated with the Riders are not perfect but those pointing it out are to blame.
