Riders head coach Jones: Manziel found out how tough the competition is in the CFL

Chris Jones has been coaching in the CFL for a long time and knows the players are high calibre and Johnny Manziel experienced that firsthand in his CFL debut.

Manziel completed 9-of-16 passes for 90 yards and four interceptions as Montreal was down 28-0 through 15 minutes and 38-3 at halftime while getting beat down 50-11 by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

“I think Johnny Manziel found out last week just how tough the competition is in our league,” Jones told Stephen Hargis of the Times Free Press.

Manziel said it was “humbling experience” and he plans to use the game as motivation as he continues his CFL career.

Jones did work Manziel out in January 2017, so he felt the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner had the potential to succeed in the CFL.

  1. Even tho the Montreal team isn’t very good , Manziel likely dropped 20 points in the NFL scouts eyes ! With 4 interceptions

The scouts likely took into account the poor preparation he got in Montreal (4 practices) before he started that game and the equally inadequate coaching on that same team.

3down trying to stir the pot. Then Drew will get upset later about responses. Dork! Who cares. What does Jennifer Lopez have to say about it?
No they pick Jones from Canada’s team to get the haters and Trolls all worked up, like Red, EE and 51

      Who cares what jones thinks
Has TO flown into town yet ?

      • The biggest fan base with the nicest stadium and highest attendance cares. Unlike the crickets heard in most CFL markets. Price here care, ergo they follow the coach’s comments.

Please keep up. This isn’t difficult.

Whose worked up….I agree…but then again so does most of the western world…

You people in regina must be awfully bored to get so worked up over such a trival comment.

  4. To informed football fans this is not a surprised. As any player who has played in both the NFL and CFL will attest our league has good players that can compete at a high level. True, the very best follow the money to the NFL but those right behind them are no better than players in the CFL. Now if only the CFL-bashing fans and media types alike could embrace the game and support it. It’s good football!!

    • Exactly. And Jones is correct; Johnny probably didn’t realize how good the athletes are in this league. He knows now, and hopefully he improves after every outing.

  5. Meh, he’s not wrong. How can Jones’ detractors say he’s wrong? JM can only get better. I hope they stick w him all season to see how he progresses.

  6. True Green // August 7, 2018 at 10:05 pm //

    Good grief. Slow news day?

  7. Of course he’s right
But it’s a little odd that Jones would give his 2 cents.
Next to Montreal, no team has paid a greater price for Manziel than the riders.
Also, No one has had more failed big signing than Jones the past few years.

    • Hes on a bye week in the states. Someone that doesn’t know alot about CFL might’ve wanted to ask a CFL coach about it. Just a thought. I doubt he knocked on the door of the reports office: “Hey yall Im here to give muh to cyents about Johnny Manziel”

    • Great to see you lending your valued opinion on yet another Rider thread. Thsnks for your support as always.

    • fannotacoach // August 7, 2018 at 10:32 pm //

What did the Riders pay for Manziel? So busy typing hate your dick got in the way again.

      • Riding the Horse // August 7, 2018 at 10:40 pm //

        About $4000.00 if memory serves.
plus an immeasurable about of reputation and respectability.

        • Fantastic – good thing you know zero about having a reputation or respectability. Always enjoy your posts.

    • No one has failed more than your “doctor”.
And to match your absurd statement, you’ve paid more for Manziel than anyone.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to THE CRAZY JERRY SHOW!

    • Tiger man // August 8, 2018 at 7:33 am //

I agree Horse. It’s the old pot calling the kettle black…this guy can’t even decide on his own quarterbacking…and he’s commenting on another team….

  8. Chris Jones was fined $5000 for meeting with Manziel’s publicist. That’s what it cost the Riders.

    • Great – thank you!

    • Riding the Horse // August 7, 2018 at 11:18 pm //

      Sorry guess I was short a $1,000.00

    • He knowingly violated CFL rules. Hence riders reputation of the riders was harmed.

      • Ridersrule // August 8, 2018 at 12:09 am //

Oh yes the rider reputation was so tarnished. Biggest draw on TSN , biggest draw at home , biggest draw on the road , biggest draw on 3down . Oh ya the rider reputation is in terrible shape .
Stamps may win a lot but wow are they boring in fact they are so boring that you come onto rider threads to get your jollies.
I often wonder if your realize how dim witted you appear.
Is it just me or does anyone else picture red just before bed with his stamp jammies on his bo Levi doll nestled in beside him on his pillow with his thumb in his mouth dreaming that Mitchell didn’t throw that pic to lose the 2017 grey cup then wake up in a cold sweat realizing that yes it happened .

      • Haha CRAZY JERRY, you only wish the Roughies’ reputation was harmed. Keep wishing, dotard.

  9. Jones is correct. CFL much tougher than many in America and even Canada realize.

  10. I agree. Jones didn’t go after reporters saying come ask me about JM. Get your heads out of you know where

  11. 1 game is simply that. Many QBs from both sides of the border had very tough games their first years and did very well as time went on. A few from both the CFL and NFL are in in their respective Hall of Fame. Give Johnny time he will do just fine as he learns the CFL game.

  12. Bottom line here is that John Manziel is a terrible QB.

Doesn’t matter if it’s the NFL or the CFL – – Manziel is equally useless in both leagues.

Mediocre arm, pisspoor accuracy, too dumb to read coverage and way too many reckless decisions.

The problem is the low salaries will bleed players to the AAF which is well funded with Silicon Valley money. CFL needs to be proactive. 1. Open NFL window (done), 2. Raise cap (Cba) 3. Reduce or eliminate ratio. People don’t understand the full implications of coddling Canadian players. It creates an artificial scarcity for Canucks which results in overpaying marginal starters and bench warmers. It also means talented imports are underpaid such as when James Wilder was given take it or leave minimum contract. Many now will leave it for AAF or XFL. Protectionism does not fly with Millennial who are more free markets and world citizens due to social media. They want excellence which is why they attend NHL, MLS, NBA, and MLB all of which gave no on field, court, or ice mandates by passport. Everone dies and Millennial are the future.

Everyone will say what makes them look best. Fact is after 2 weeks practice this was in effect the first preseason game for John. Has everyone forgotten Masoli threw 2 very bad inte in his first preseason game thus year in little over a quarter with first team offence?

    • Tiger man // August 8, 2018 at 7:45 am //

Yes, and this is Masoli’s first season as the declared starter, as such, he will make mistakes. But, he also led the offense to a win.

I do wish he hadn’t thrown those interceptions, but he will learn from them and they will get better.

Say, how is Franklyn doing in Toronto?? Isn’t this his first season as Toronto first stringer??

      • Masoli is proving everybody wrong. Especially AHole51. Yes the TD:INT percentage isn’t great, but like you say, its his first year. He will learn from that. He pushed the Stamps to the brink if not for that pick.

  15. Craig Campbell // August 8, 2018 at 8:29 am //

Salaries do not reflect the talent of the players in the league. It’s a tough league to play in and stay long enough to have a career.

  16. Evil Empire // August 8, 2018 at 10:30 am //

I have no idea what Jones has to do with Manziel. Except that he was fined by the CFL for tampering related to Manziel.

It seems awfully random that a Tennessee reporter would ask him about Manziel. At least I assume the reporter asked him. Has the guy ever even been in that state ? I don’t follow NCAA, or NFL. You know what. Scratch that, I really don’t care.

    • Ridersrule // August 8, 2018 at 11:23 am //

Rogal you topped a new level of stupidity, you post made no sense at all.

    • According to Wikipedia, Jones was born in Tennessee, coached 2 different times at Tennessee Tech, and splits his home between Regina and Tennessee. I think he might have been in Tennessee a time or 2. It might be possible that some Tennessee reporter might know of his CFL connections and asked him about Manziel.

You forgot one other biggest… Biggest amount of people who cheer like crazy when the riders get their a$$ handed to them.

  18. The biggest fan base with the nicest stadium and highest attendance cares. Unlike the crickets heard in most CFL markets. Price here care, ergo they follow the coach’s comments.

Please keep up. This isn’t difficult.
