Riders head coach Chris Jones works out Terrell Owens

Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach and general manager Chris Jones worked out Terrell Owens on Sunday as reported by Stephen Hargis of the Times Free Press.

Jones discussed the workout.

“He’s got an agent up in Edmonton and he reached out to me and explained that Terrell was interested in working out. I saw the video of Julio clocked him at 4.41 or 4.43 – he looked in great shape and so I thought well, I’m going to be home, he’s going to be home here in the Chatanooga area, so it gave us an opportunity to get him in front of us. He’s a physical presence, now it’s just a matter of seeing if he’s in football shape,” Jones said.

“He and I are going to speak and decide exactly how he wants to handle it. He’s got some football shape stuff that he’s going to have to get into. He caught the football well today, he got in and out of his breaks decent, football-wise he’s got a ways to go.”

And Owens did too.

“I just appreciate coach for the opportunity to come out. He wanted to assess where I am physically and see me run. I’m hoping they liked what they saw. I know I’m truly blessed, I know I can still play the game. If anybody can be the first Hall of Famer to be inducted and come back and play, why not me? I know that I can do it, it’s just a matter of someone giving me an opportunity, believing in me,” Owens said.

The 44-year-old Owens has not played in a professional game since 2010 with the Cincinnati Bengals. But he can still run – fast, clocking a 4.43 40-yard dash.

Owens was added and then released from the Edmonton Eskimos negotiation list after he activated the 10-day clause.

In 2012 he played eight games with the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League making 35 receptions for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Seattle Seahawks signed Owens during training camp in 2012 but released him a few weeks later. Owens captained and played for the self-named Team Owens in the inaugural game of the American Flag Football League last June.

During 16 NFL seasons, Owens had 15,934 career receiving yards which rank second all-time in NFL history and 153 receiving touchdowns put him third. He was a five-time first-team All-Pro in the NFL. Owens was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2018 class.

Of course he did that didn’t take long

    • Neither did your asinine comment. And then to display your complete infatuation – you comment under your other name too.

    • He just assumes it will be easier in the CFL than it was in the NFL, he is in for a surprise I wager. I say give him a try,. see how he does compared to Carter. He has to learn the Canadian rules on top of everything else

      • Canadian rules? he’s a receiver, he will run patterns the same as the NFL nothing much to learn. He will find it easier, with the motion he gets a head start on his patterns, he only needs one foot in bounds to make a catch and he has all kinds of room in the end zone to make a catch

    • Um, your name…”Historic McMahon”? Why is that? You should be damn humble and consider your FAILURES as a franchise as well. I was in Calgary several times during the 80’s. I was one of those people that bought a “Save Our Stumps” button because I felt so sorry for the team on the verge of collapsing…think I gave a donation as well…have no use for the button now…can I mail it to you?

      • Good information Philski. I didn’t know they had a “SOS” campaign, because all one reads on this site from the Stamp fans is that the Roughies had a telethon to raise cash.
And good on you for trying to teach “Historical Choke Artists from McMahon to be HUMBLE, but he with many handles does not know how to conduct himself with humility. He’s simply a misfit who is trying to buy drinks for his 3down compadres.

      • Thank you for your support Philski.
Remind us all of the illustrious past 3 decades for the Hamilton Ti-Cats please?

    • This story is funny because riders fans were making all kinds of dumb comments when the Eskies put him on their negotiation list and now that Jones and the riders worked him out everything is ok because it’s the riders, they should bring back Vince young and sign Owens thinking that they will be the best tandem in the history of the CFL and they could save money with the seniors discount.

      • I think you got it wrong, Big Lar; it was ur Stamp fans doing the ridiculing. And hey, why wouldn’t any team take a look at a potentially good receiver for their team? Looking doesn’t mean buying.

    • Red, why don’t you take up cryptoquips, get a job, or volunteer for the Stamps. Just do something so you don’t have to spend your entire life on this site annoying EVERYONE.

  2. Bombsquad // August 5, 2018 at 6:47 pm //

Nothing ventured, nothing gained as the old saying goes. I don’t know though, 40 yrs old and hasn’t played in awhile will provide a lot of rust, i don’t care how fast a guy can run. Carter & Owens both on the same team, that should provide some entertainment alright, haha.

    Lolololololololololo
That Stamps are undefeated and Chris Jones is doing something ridiculous….. the universe is in order.
I thought the riders had the best receiving group in the league. Guess Carter isn’t all he’s cracked up to be.

    • carter played slotback. dont comment if you dont know what youre talking about…so dont comment anymore then

      • Ride the horse // August 5, 2018 at 7:50 pm //

Is a slotback not a receiver??

      • Riders blow // August 6, 2018 at 10:21 am //

Only riders fans would defend this workout because it’s one of their own coaches working him out and any other team they would trash talk this workout

      • Didn’t the Eskies just beat your 4 th place and free falling riders?

        • Wayne Kenov // August 6, 2018 at 9:25 pm //

But it was close, so that counts as a win for Saskatchewan fans. Don’t take this away from them, it’s all they have.

      • slotback is a receiver dummy

        • hey dummy. the inference is that TO would replace Carter, as evidenced by the “Guess Carter isn’t all he’s cracked up to be” comment. Owens is a wide receiver. Carter played slotback so Owens wouldnt be replacing Carter now would he? Its baffling that i had to explain that but clearly all you fools need an education. Thanks for coming out goofs. Did you get your mommy to help you with the math puzzle?

    • Ya….he’s signed already to a multi year deal ya tool!

Go see of you can buy Ballantine lunch, mounted by the horse

  4. This article was great but it probably needed a lot more video.

  5. Isn’t it kinda late in the season? By the time he’s CFL ready it will be January.

    • He’s a receiver not a QB, teams have signed NFL cuts and they start in the CFL immediately. You go out run patterns, get open and make a catch. He’s still very fast and he gets a head start in the CFL with the motion.

    • Late in the season?
All teams will be signing NFL cuts in September, it happens every year.

  6. More interested in Rico McWilliams honestly.

    • He looks like a serious prospect. Decent size and 4.4 range speed. Quit football for a year to help his family, but he’s back and had a tryout with Washington. But hey, Jones is a football junkie. If you had a chance to workout TO at the same time wouldn’t you take it? I note that he said in one of those clips that TO wasn’t in game shape, so that’s probably the diplomatic way to say no.

  7. I don’t know how many routes the guy ran be looked GASED in those vids. “Football shape” might be a ways off.

    • Bleeding Green // August 5, 2018 at 11:18 pm //

That’s the first thing I thought. He looked completely wiped. But I dunno what the workout involved at that point. You don’t see Roosevelt or Carter etc coming off the field that tired out…

  8. Get real // August 5, 2018 at 7:12 pm //

The guy is 44 years old. He hasn’t played a game since 2012. Chris Jones, who is supposedly the best scout and talent evaluator in the CFL, gives him a workout. Is there no one out there that is at least ten years younger? I remember Jones saying the team has to be younger and faster. Well, maybe faster. What a joke. Good thing Jones doesn’t pay any attention to what the fans and other teams think because from Regina you can hear the laughter coming from Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg, depending on which way the wind is coming from. That is the funniest thing I have heard today. What happened to sustainability? With a 44 year old!

    • Ride the horse // August 5, 2018 at 8:11 pm //

Well by that reasoning he might as well try out the local pop Warner team too.
Why is Jones home goofing off vacationing?? I thought he worked all the time.

      • Uh….is he not at a football field working ?? Lord, you get dumber by the second.

        • Get real // August 5, 2018 at 8:44 pm //

Yeah, he is at a football field but doing something that goofy, I would not call working. Just because you walk around with a hammer in your hand, does not mean you are working. Time not well spent.

          • Thanks for your input coach. Others were being evaluated but you’ve got it all figured out.

        • He wasn’t working. He was grandstanding

      • Jeez, Red, no wonder EVERYBODY sees you as an A-hole. And soon you’ll be spewing the “poor, poor me” refrain.

Probably not, but running that fast as a 44 year old is not the same as playing football at 44.

  25. brian johnson // August 5, 2018 at 10:14 pm //

just a real question because i don’t know!
Is Owens Broke!! Short of Cash?? 10 plus years in NFL
making big bucks, pension must be $70,000 per year.
    Whats up!!!

    • I doubt it. He has always been about clean living, he is not the type to go out and blow all his money. I think this is just the football player version of a midlife crisis… he wants to prove he can still run with the young bucks.

    • I don’t think they start collecting NFL pension until age 55.

    • Bleeding Green // August 5, 2018 at 11:31 pm //

He is actually broke. blew through about 80 mill. Child support for 4 baby mamas will do that to a guy.

  26. As I understand it, Owens agent called and said my client wants to work out for you. Even if nothing comes out of this, it keeps the bridge open for other clients and players to come to the CFL. It also allowed the Riders to workout a DB and see how he is. Having a receiver in the area looking for work and able to run routes is a bonus. See 2 guys wen looking for 1.

Not being in football shape means the Riders are probably not offering him a contract.

  27. Jones should be looking for offensive lineman, not receivers..

  28. Maybe Jones should work out the big sweaty guy in the grey tracksuit at defensive tackle.

  29. That feller Yup, he done run off from the nervous hospital. I reckon they’ll catch him and bring him back.

  30. At least now Jones can write-off his trip home as a business expense…

  31. Can anyone imagine the comments we would be reading if it was Sherman working out TO?

  32. Bleeding Green // August 5, 2018 at 11:25 pm //

I really hope this doesn’t transpire. I get that the timing worked out nicely w Jones being on the bye and in the same area blah blah. This is a Kavis move. Please just don’t do this.

  33. MR. Green // August 6, 2018 at 2:50 am //

If, if he signed like most players, it takes 2 or 3 weeks of practice to get close to game shape. Owens is already in great shape.
It’s a good storyline to follow. Guess we wait and see. Jones will make the right decision.

  34. Bomber Fan In The Stands // August 6, 2018 at 3:08 am //

Why does this not surprise me. The Chris Jones circus is back in town!

  35. We don’t often get to hear the names of the players at the workouts, but TO’s presence at this one has caused a couple of names to get leaked. As well as McWilliams there was a QB named Justin Holman from Central Florida. He had a good sophomore year and then something seems to have happened to side track his college career. Haven’t found the story on that yet but he’s clearly a very bright guy. His goals going into college were to make the NFL and become a doctor, a radiologist.

  36. Evil Empire // August 6, 2018 at 3:51 am //

    Wow.

That was a little scary. The guy still has some speed, but he looked gassed, and ready to have a heart attack. I know it’s hot in Tennessee, but damn. He looks about 100 yrs old in that interview. I’m glad Edmonton didn’t even offer the guy the league minimum. Based on his 40 time, he still has speed. But, after seeing this, there’s no way that guy could supplant any of Edm’s international receivers.

So, if Jones was there to check out the DB, too. It probably wasn’t a good thing the guy was giving up plays to Owens. Neither guy belongs in the CFL. So, I almost expect SK to announce a signing soon.

The offence looks great Jonesie. Stick to the plan. Don’t worry about the O Line, the running game, or a QB. Enjoy the National Cornbread Festival. I bet that’s a pretty big deal around those parts.

  39. Where's Shultz? // August 6, 2018 at 9:37 am //

Everyone always shits on CJ because of stunts like this but I like it.

He’s putting in some hours on his off-time to follow a lead. Yeah, Owens probably isn’t gonna be a CFL star let alone a starter but he works out a DB in the process and just makes one more connection in his career. Whatever it might cost to set up is negligible to the richest team in the league.

Say what you want about Jones, he clearly has a passion for what he does and will leave no stone unturned to do his job.

    • If Jones had been successful with some of these “stunts”, I’d agree with you. But its foolishness is always confirmed. Doubt this is any different.
His biggest desire is to rehab the career of an old, washed up, troubled former big name player. That way he’d get exposure south of the border, get a big job down south and dump the riders.

    • Riding the Horse // August 6, 2018 at 10:43 am //

1)- “no stone unturned” is bearing little fruit. It’s a flawed strategy. It’s far too random and unplanned. The Ownens workout is proof of this- a spontaneous decision, just because both were in the area and the same time.
More is not better in scouting. Smart scouts/GMs have their hot spots and contacts. They plan scouting based on what is most likely to produce what they are looking for.
Hoping to find that 1 in a million gem based on luck of “turning over” the right stone at the right time, is as likely as winning a million on the 6 49.

    • Bombs Away // August 6, 2018 at 10:57 am //

It must be he is trying to get quick success to land a gig in the NFL. Owen got to be good for a three year contract. But… How fast will he be with that flexible oxygen tank strapped to his back?

I have been a Stamps fan since the 60s and you giving us a bad reputation. I have seen this team at the bottom and top of the pile. And to to Rider fans that bate this clown along, you need to grow up too,. Both sets of fan sound like a couple of spoiled children arguing over who’s dad is better.

  44. For what it’s worth, I seriously hope this doesn’t happen, but I do give credit to Jones for his work ethic. No harm done with this but he’s always looking around. Say what you want about who he’s looking at but while other gm’s are on vacation sipping drinks on a beach he seems to be still focused on the job at hand. The riders are improving but I think we all can agree that there’s definitely more work to be done. Can’t fault him for checking out a couple guys on his own time.
