Riders paperwork error causes them to play one man short in loss to Eskimos

The Saskatchewan Roughriders played one man short in losing to the Edmonton Eskimos.

The Riders accidentally submitted a game sheet with strong-side linebacker Derrick Moncrief’s name on it, but he’s currently on the six-game injured list. Former NFLer Matt Elam was the replacement and tabbed to be active but not on the paperwork. So the Riders had to scratch Elam and make other lineup changes.

“We went through it, we checked it three or four times and he had four or five copies of what he turned in and unfortunately he turned in the wrong one,” Saskatchewan head coach Chris Jones said.

“It’s the second time actually that’s ever happened. The protocols you have to go through…we’ve got three different people that are to check it and unfortunately the wrong one was taken to the CFL.”

The Riders were left without any alternative except to scratch Elam and take on the Eskimos down one player. Mike Edem slid down to play strong-side linebacker, Marc-Oliver Brouillette went to safety, but he got hurt on the first play of the game and Tobi Antigha took over.

All that switching just because a simple task was unable to be carried out properly.

I Hate when the bureaucrats are in control. That could so easily have been allowed to be amended.

    • Pino Nuwar // August 3, 2018 at 2:53 pm //

Lots of things are “easy”, but the rule for rosters to be submitted before a certain deadline exists for a reason. There is an advantage (even if it is only a slight one) in knowing your opponents’ personnel decisions. If the change were allowed, then the Riders would have been given an unfair advantage due to their own clerical error.

So tell us, why do you think it would have been better for the mistake to provide an advantage to the team that didn’t make the mistake, rather than the team that did?

      • Pino Nuwar // August 3, 2018 at 2:54 pm //

Last sentence was backwards. Should have read: “..why do you think it would have been better for the mistake to provide an advantage to the team that made the mistake, rather than the team that didn’t?”

  2. Who is ‘he’ that is referenced making the mistake? Time for some transparency from this mistake riddled organization!

    • Mistake riddled organization? This hasn’t been a mistake riddled organization, but in the past it has been a corruption riddled organization. I have to admit that I wondered if there might be some kind of sabotage element in this, but without knowing who and exactly how this happened there’s no point in speculating.

      • Do you have any source or reference to substantiate your “corruption riddled” claim about the Riders? That is quite a serious allegation of a community owned franchise. Maybe you should stop spreading false rumours. Sabotage element? really? maybe you should take your tin foil hat off.
Pretty clear now that you have no affinity to the Saskatchewan Roughriders and an allegiance to Chis Jones only.

        • You again! I thought you went to hide in shame? We’ve only been talking about the past and present corruption within the Riders media and organization all year, so I’m not going to bother repeating it for you. And that’s quite an ironic last sentence, since YOU are the guy who doesn’t like Antigha, Jefferson, Francis, etc. because they are players Jones has converted from other positions and therefore are Jones’ “arrogance projects” according to you. They help our TEAM greatly, but you don’t like them because Chris Jones doing things in unconventional ways makes you feel insecure, and like a loser. So your dislike of Chris Jones trumps doing what’s best for the team, whereas for me it’s exactly the other way around. I put the team first.

          • Is Chris Jones your dad? Who the hell would imply the Riders are corrupt in a lame defense of Chris Jones?

          • So Mr. “arrogance project”, not only are you not man enough to admit when you’re wrong, but you try some lame diversion tactic as well! But I guess that’s what losers do.

          • So you can’t substantiate your original post, “in the past it has been a corruption riddled organization”. How long do the mods allow slanderous content to be spewed on their site.

          • Flip-flop flip-flop, just like cowardly losers do. I already answered that question for you. Do you have Alzheimers? Or, given your character, maybe too much huffing? Here’s one for you, however, one of many, MANY, that we’ve discussed in detail. How do you feel about Chris Getzlaf’s $220,000 contract, and the fact that he was being paid WAY more than comparable players on other teams? Are you good with that?

          • You haven’t answered anything. You can’t substantiate your baseless allegations about corruption. Stop maligning the Riders organization.

          • Lol. So, you won’t answer my questions, and you won’t respond to the answers I’ve given you. When you do kind of say something it doesn’t make any sense because you don’t know what you’re talking about, and to top if off YOU’RE disrespecting the the team, the organization and the fans by calling players like Antigha and Jefferson “arrogance projects.” Clearly you are just a waste of time, so I’m going to stop wasting my time on you.

  3. Former Rider fan // August 3, 2018 at 1:18 pm //

Are you paying attention Craig Reynolds?

  4. White Horse // August 3, 2018 at 1:19 pm //

Yes , that was a stupid mistake. However, Rider fans need not hang their heads. Collaros and the team over-all looked much improved. I believe Collaros will make a difference as the season goes on. Having said that, it is very apparent that the Riders are going to have to beat out Bombers for third place. That won’t be easy!

    • Who is this Stamps fan that doesn’t hate the Greenery? Lol I agree with you. Bombs looking high n mighty after 2 wins over the lowly Argos tho. True tests upcoming for the Blue and Gold. Will be fun to duke it out in early Sept. NOT hating on the Bombs here, Just think they need some true competition to show if they’re for real this year.

    • Blue rules // August 3, 2018 at 6:20 pm //

Correction white, beat out Edmonton perhaps Calgary for 3 (third) spot. Bomber’s still have two (2) cracks at your sorry A$$. LOL

  5. Just embarrassing

  6. The riders were already making mistakes before kickoff.
However, this is not the reason the riders lost

  7. Let’s be honest – – the backwater hick Chris Jones isn’t exactly the “best and brightest” so it’s understandable that he’d make dumb mistakes regarding clock management and the salary cap.

But FFS, filling out a proper line up card with his crayon is about as simple as it can get.

It’s comical how Jones continues to embarrass the Regina franchise.

    • How amusing. Our own representative of the trailer trash element is calling Chris Jones a backwater hick.

    • rider fan // August 3, 2018 at 2:12 pm //

Chris Jones is the best DC in the CFL, keep name calling this just shows your intelligence . He is learning and has my suport

      • Pino Nuwar // August 3, 2018 at 2:47 pm //

Chris Jones is a good DC, but the best DC title goes to Calgary’s own DC, whose initials are quite literally D.C.

    • riderontheisland // August 3, 2018 at 2:18 pm //

Embarass the Rider nation…. I wonder if it’s anything like your mother feels?

    • Si1ver Fox // August 3, 2018 at 2:20 pm //

A51 – Do Mom and Dad let you sit at the adult table at Christmas yet? I’m guessing they do when “big bro” isn’t around to remind them of the pride and success that one of their children brought to the family….

    • This coming from a self absorbed blowhard who eats crayons.

Comical how you continue to embarrass the Argo Not “fan base”

    • And it is beyond “comical” that you would assume that a CFL head coach would be micro-managing the various clerical matters that every team has to deal with…do you not have any understanding of how businesses function in terms of management principles, the distribution of labour, etc.? Obviously not…as you still cannot figure out how to spell “Saskatchewan” and are thus afraid to use the word in any post you make–too much to expect that you could have any understanding of management principles.

  8. It’s either incompetence or someone within is sabotaging things.
    Not good either way

  9. Pennyrocker // August 3, 2018 at 2:35 pm //

What are you being paid for in submitting the player roster. Marijuana is still illegal and getting drunk is no excuse for submitting the wrong forms

  10. Get real // August 3, 2018 at 2:40 pm //

“That could so easily have been allowed to be amended”. Those are the rules. Rosters have to be in to the CFL the day before the game. They can’t start making exceptions for the Riders. Really shouldn’t be that difficult a task.
Here we go. The Riders lost. Bring on the conspiracy theories. No doubt the Eskimos have a plant, a spy, if you will, in the Riders office who arranged for the wrong roster to be sent in. Call the RCMP. Call the FBI.
Just what is in that green koolaid?

    • lolol
      cheers
      funny enough, so far today I’ve heard the following blamed;
      Schedule makers
      Officials
      the turf
      TSN
      the halftime show
      the weather

      • That list comes directly from the voices in your head. There was actual football talk on here for a couple of days while you worked tirelessly to get back on the site you continually get booted from!!

Figure it out already – you get punted because you are an annoying little man who’s obsession with the Riders is clinical!!

        • Puck Hog // August 3, 2018 at 6:30 pm //

Good comment, Yup. I can imagine our little, Red Jerry typing feverishly in an attempt to get a comment posted here. Can’t you just see him sweating?
And “clinical”, yes! Makes one wonder what goes through his mind when he incessantly tries to annoy others and wreck this football forum for everyone? He is clearly a sociopath. Oh well, sooner or later he should be able to get some effective help from some doctor.

  11. Scottsask // August 3, 2018 at 2:42 pm //

Inexcusable, if you don’t want the players to blow it on the field, don’t blow it before the ball is kicked off. Get your heads right!!!

  12. Provemewrong // August 3, 2018 at 3:01 pm //

Jones if a fine DC. And he did well with the EE team he inherited. But this is year 3 of a failing experiment. He has built a good defense, but has wasted draft picks and missed trading opportunities with the rest of the team. Sliders will not get to the GC, yet again.

    • Get real // August 3, 2018 at 4:12 pm //

Agreed. In year one under Jones, it was an absolute dumpster fire with revolving doors and league fines. Year two, it could be said that they were moderately successful. So far this season, the defence is strong but the offence has progressed very little if at all. I know there are a lot of games left but the same mistakes keep coming up. Short yardage plays are dismal. Penalties are plenty. Use of the time clock and when to call time outs are an adventure. Both the players and the coaches seem confused about how to run a two minute offence, calling strange plays and the players fighting for a few more yards instead of getting out of bounds or going down. I don’t know if the players just don’t know how to stop the clock or are more interested in personal stats then team wins. Now even Duron Carter is getting surely. On top of that, the Rider management can’t even get a roster into the CFL office without making mistakes that limit their roster.
The last two games when the Riders actually had better numbers in many categories then their opposition but couldn’t win the only stat that matters(the score) suggests some problems in play calling, decision making and leadership, both on and off the field. The Riders now have to get it together for the rest of the season if they want to look back on it as moderately successful. Fourth place in the west for another year does not cut it.

      • lol! These must be scripted for you, right? They all sound exactly the same, and they’re all very poorly thought out, and they either fall apart immediately or after you scratch the surface. I’m sure we’ll see more carbon copies of this in the future. They’re good for a laugh at least!

  13. Riding the Horse // August 3, 2018 at 5:42 pm //

I wonder if it was the same guy who was in charge of counting during Grey Cup 2009???????

    • Pino Nuwar // August 3, 2018 at 6:34 pm //

That was none other than Kavis Reed, actually. His ability to manage a football game or team hasn’t improved much since that debacle.

  14. Stupidity reigns.

  15. Definitely very Riderish, definitely, definitely very Riderish.

  16. 1player extra cost them the Grey Cup 1 less against the Eskies during the regular season who cares.
I will admit I’m an Eskie fan even when Jones coached here with his accent I called couch Uncle brother cousin he’s a hick

  17. Horse shit // August 4, 2018 at 10:51 am //

If we’re going to talk about corruption maybe we should talk about the stamps, and how they allowed a player to sign a contract bigger then any other s in history just so the stamp win, remember flutie and the flutie rule, let’s scrap those records from history since it wasent fair on the other teams

  18. Evil Empire // August 4, 2018 at 7:13 pm //

Rider fans are constantly living in the past. Whining about Flutie ? That was in a whole other millennium. You may want to move on. Since you are apparently old enough to know about Flutie. Shouldn’t your troll account, and username be considerably too immature for somebody your age ?

    Brutal !

Pissed and moaned because they couldn’t “ afford “ to compete. And, yet both Cups they’ve won in the sms era, they went over the cap. And, I don’t buy the numbers SK submits to the league for one second. They were hiding a whole second roster off the books a cpl years ago.

The organization is a joke, and so are the fans. How many rules has Jones broken ? I’m so glad SK poached him. He’s a black eye on the league.

He has stacked his defence at the expense of the entire team. The Riders scored 17 points against Edmonton. 17 points isn’t good enough against a West Division team. Riderville already praying for a crossover. LOL… How embarrassing.

    • Aren’t you the one that claims to be a humble person? Yeah, my ass you are. Little rich kid living in the U.S. probably off his daddy yet mouthing off about the Riders and their fans being a joke. Get a life. Go back to the north where the fur trade business is thriving and the city of Deadmenton features the best fairweather fans in Canada. You’re jealous of Rider Nation for two reasons — Chris Jones left the evil empire and eskimo fans don’t even come close to Rider fans as far as fan support and standing behind the organization. And you have a population in the surrounding area that is larger than the entire population of Saskatchewan, yet your stadium remains half empty. At the last game, about one-third of Commonwealth was cheering for the Riders. And yes, some do live in Deadmenton but we’ve travelled several times to watch our green and white and it’s absolutely amazing how many fans travel the transit system from the downtown mall and elsewhere to see the Riders. What about your team? Hardly a whisper in New Mosaic. It really shows how fan support is in Rider Nation compared to Deadmenton. You’re a hard person to figure out. I don’t know if you’re old enough to grow whiskers but you could try acting your age. And really, get over your hatred and jealousy over Saskatchewan. Time to grow up and get a life!!!

    • And furthermore, if you count $18,000 over the salary cap in 2013 (less than one-third of the minimum salary for one player) and slightly more in 2007, then call us cheaters but I’ll take a Grey Cup any day. And what about the ’70’s through to the ’90’s when NO salary cap existed and the evil empire was raking in championships for those reasons? Was that fair? The richest team, largest team salary just like the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Now, what reputation does Deadmenton have? Get serious, eh.

  19. Colourmegreen // August 7, 2018 at 2:33 am //

Evil empire is a joke person with no clue about football. His posts confirm it time and again. He is on that level with Red, no one gives a crap about what he says.
Shocked on the roster screw up, how did it happen again. Amateur for sure, should never have happened.
