He’s Mike Reilly and you’re not: Esks down Riders with Q4 comeback

As long as there is time left on the clock, it’s tough to count out Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Mike Reilly.

Reilly ran in the winning touchdown inside the three-minute warning and passed for another as the Eskimos won their third game in a row, emerging with a 26-19 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Thursday.

“A win is a win, man,” said Eskimos head coach Jason Maas. “You play a Western Conference opponent at home, they were a tough opponent and they gave us everything. It was grind-it-out win and we’ll take it. We don’t apologize for anything.”

Riders head coach Chris Jones said that Reilly just seems to find a way in pressure situations.

“He keeps on playing,” he said. “You have to knock him out. He is just one of those guys. As long as he is up on the canvas, he is going to keep fighting and find a way to beat you.”

Jones felt his team let a winnable game get away from them.

“We were out-coached, out-executed and were the more undisciplined football team, and it reared its head again tonight,” he said. “We know we are good enough to beat that football team, but they were disciplined enough to make the plays when they needed to and won the game.”

The Eskimos (5-2) started off the scoring with a rare first-quarter touchdown, as a 61-yard passing play from Reilly to Derel Walker set up a three-yard TD run by CJ Gable.

Saskatchewan (3-4), which saw the return of starting quarterback Zach Collaros after missing the last four games with a concussion, tied the game up late in the opening quarter on its third attempt from the one-yard line, finally taken in by Marcus Thigpen.

Edmonton regained the lead on a 48-yard field goal by Sean Whyte, the only scoring play of the second to make it 10-7 at the half. The only other notable moment in the quarter was Maas taking out his frustration on a Gatorade cooler.

Saskatchewan took the lead early in the third on a 41-yard TD pass from Collaros to Duron Carter.

Edmonton came roaring back as Walker made a circus catch in double coverage for a 36-yard major.

“We know what type of player he is,” Maas said of Walker. “He came out ready to play tonight, that’s for sure. When his number was called, he made the most of it.”

The Riders looked to regain the lead late in the third quarter, but another third-down gamble from the one was stuffed just short by the Edmonton defence upon video review. Edmonton conceded a safety on the next series, to lead 17-16.

After having what looked to be a 97-yard TD pass to Duke Williams taken away upon another review, Eskimos receiver Nate Behar then fumbled, leading to a 33-yard Brett Lauther field goal.

The Eskimos put together a long drive late in the fourth, with Reilly taking it in from the one with 2:23 remaining, but the two-point convert missed.

Saskatchewan failed on a third-down gamble, allowing Edmonton to put the game away with a 46-yard Whyte field goal.

The Eskimos are in B.C. to face the Lions next Thursday, while the Riders have a bye week before hosting the Calgary Stampeders on Aug. 19.

Wonderful game! So glad the ticats rid themselves of the non-clutch, glass jaw Collaros. What a fantastic game! 😀

  2. Meh I won’t feel too bad about this. Both teams played well. Tonight Edmonton got a couple of more breaks.

Collaros will get better as he settles into the system more.

  3. grumblingaboutgreen // August 3, 2018 at 1:33 am //

and so once AGAIN the riders fall to a sub 500 record. well known as a JOURNEYMAN rather than a league leader at least kevin GLENN compiled a career of as many wins as losses despite spending years of it on less than STELLAR hamilton teams! as with ANY sporting supporters hope springs eternal among the inhabitants of riderhole but they ought to have KNOWN that they would face a stiffer test among teams of their OWN division. the facts inevitably bear this out as they REMAIN winless against the west as they head into the BYE with their tails tucked!

  4. What a horrifically bad job of clock management by Regina.

Electing to take the kick off and waste time instead of just scrimmaging free the FG?

Clueless Tre Mason scrambling to pick up an extra couple yards instead of getting out of bounds?

Not even taking a single downfield shot when you need a TD to tie?

    Such a dumb team.

Are u stupid area51? It was working. Refs brutal calls would. The game. Derrels Walker’s TD was a opi. H pushed off on Gainey. F u all. Riders will win. The cup.

      • Riding the Horse // August 3, 2018 at 1:44 am //

Here we go! Blame the refs- a rider fan classic!

How about the fact you could punch it in from the 1?
Or the fact you had a lead late and couldn’t close it out!!

      • Had a good laugh watching Eddie Gainey getting absolutely torched tonight.

Reminded me of the 2015 EDF when he was humiliated by Greg Ellingson and gave up the game losing, season ending, touchdown.

As I’ve explained numerous times, Eddie Gainey is trash. He’s about as much of an “all star” DB as Goof Tisdale was.

        • Area. Our after the fact genius strikes again.

        • If you are referring to the Walker touchdown catch…go back and look at the video. I would challenge you to then state that he was not in a correct defensive position on the receiver! You like to convey the impression that you are an a.o.e. regarding football, but the truth is demonstrated otherwise when you make this kind of a statement–and when you consistently continue to display your historical ignorance by referring to this team as “Regina” Who is the “trash” and the “goof” here?

          • Oh, and I also forgot to mention that as of last season, there is no longer an option for the receiving team in the last 3 minutes of a game; they must receive a kickoff rather than choose to take the ball at the 35 yard-line! It seems our football-authority didn’t know this…

    • grumblingaboutgreen // August 3, 2018 at 1:38 am //

one has to WONDER what exactly goes through the mind of the bench boss in green and white. he used his LAST timeout in the dying minutes of a closely contested game he was losing but WHY? to stop edmonton from converting on their TOUCHDOWN seems like a poor use of resources given that it was EVIDENT that he would need every second! it wouldnt even change the OUTCOME because a saskatchewan touchdown would have SEALED the game either way while a field goal would have been INSUFFICIENT. of course the play calling on their final drive was equally SUSPECT as the urgency of scoring points before the game ended seemed BEYOND the grasp of the riders! it used to be jason maas whose late game CHOICES were prime for second guessing but tonight showed that jones equally merits that SKEPTICISM.

    • I witnessed some piss poor clock management you speak of in the Argo Not game too Areola?

    • Riders4Last // August 3, 2018 at 7:26 am //

The sliders are so pathetic that their 750,000 a year head coach can’t even fill out a roster sheet properly and send it in to head office ,someone is being overpaid.

Hey Dion Rogal, you said exactly the same thing on the CFL site…Curious are you challenged or just to stupid to know how stupid you are…obsessed with the Riders how does it feel to be owned boy???lololololol

      • Did it ever occur to you that someone else in the organization actually has that job? Contrary to what you might think, the head coach doesn’t handle every aspect of the game logistics.

        • Evil Empire // August 3, 2018 at 1:33 pm //

          @Heathers.

If anybody needs proof of what you are saying.

Harken back to Maas standing on the sideline asking who his return guy was. Because the Esks had NOBODY back to return the punt. Maas didn’t know who his return guy was. and he shouldn’t be expected to.

As with any large enterprise. The guy at the top hires subordinates to deal with many day to day aspects of a thing. This thing is CFL Football, and it would be impossible for one man, to micro manage all 3 phases.

    • In the last 3 minutes of a game your no longer have the option and must receive the kickoff. Changed last year.

    • Evil Empire // August 3, 2018 at 1:06 pm //

      @Area51.

      Bruh…

You can’t elect to start at the 35 in the last 3 mins. The other team MUST kickoff. So, there’s zero controversy on that play.

      Your other points are valid.

    • Or maybe, just maybe, like I’ve been telling YOU from the start, your overpaid, overrated, injury prone so called “franchise QB” just plain sucks…ever thought of that?

  5. Riding the Horse // August 3, 2018 at 1:37 am //

Collaros was definitely an improvement over Bridge. but it’s wasn’t enough. Reilly continues his domination over the riders.
You still can’t beat the big boys in Alberta. Until you can your not a contender in the west. That’s just how she goes.

  6. As I’ve explained numerous times, Collaros is LIGHT YEARS better than Brando Bridge or the Watford character – – but with such a terrible OLine, Collaros has no chance.

  7. MR. Green // August 3, 2018 at 1:39 am //

part of the PROBLEM seems to be the state of DENIAL the riders fans live in. there is a frankly INEXCUSABLE degree to which a blind eye is turned to the mismanagemeant of their so called COACH! but this is just the SYMPTOM resulting from the lack of HUMILITY and consequent unjustified arrogance when an attitude of RESPECT for the eskimos well demonstrated on field superiority would be more APPROPRIATE. duron carter actually ran backwards returning a punt in the third quarter for NO discernible reason other than a VAST underestimation of the quality of OPPONENT he was facing! there is no doubt that he is slowly but surely learning the LESSON that the players who hone the fine CRAFTS of playing defence and now punt returner actually know what they’re DOING! turns out theres more to it than being cris carters son.

  10. Will Rider Fan finally acknowledge that his is ZERO threat in the West?

Regina can compete with bottom feeders like Hamilton and Montreal, but they’re hopelessly outclassed against the Alberta teams.

  11. Evil Empire // August 3, 2018 at 1:48 am //

Mike Reilly is literally the biggest “ X “ factor in the league. Not too often does he, and his receivers have a very mediocre game. But, there is not a QB in this league as clutch as Reilly.

    Rider fans…

    Where you at ?

You keep saying the Eskimo D was suspect. But, they shut your team down. They’ve had injuries, but have played well. 4-2 kinda backs it up, right ? They gave up 17 points to SK. The last 2 points were a gift from Edmonton.

Edmonton’s offence struggled ( Understatement). But, that won’t happen two games in a row. But, who won the game ? Our offence is better than your defence. And, you have ZERO offence.

    Well done, Jones.

    3-8 incoming.

    • Puck Hog // August 3, 2018 at 2:34 am //

Wrong. Reilly had a mediocre game tonight. And, the Esks o-line is weaker than the Riders’. Reilly could have been easily sacked 7 times tonight. Riders looking promising and on the upswing. Esks did enough to win, but didn’t look great.

      • Exactly, except I wouldn’t say that Reilly had a mediocre night. He was sacked 4 times and was in chuck and duck mode the most of the rest of the game. He passed for under 50% and I would say that was because of the pressure the Rider D was putting on him and not him playing poorly.

how DISAPPOINTING this must be for the fans who thought they saw the coming of a SAVIOUR in the return of collaros! saskatchewan clearly HAD a chance late in the game but as sure as riderhole harbours JEALOUSY for their rival cities with nhl teams they blew it late as ALWAYS. maybe the defining moment was jones in his colossal ineptitude standing there mouthing WHATS HAPPENING like hes the one with head problems rather than collaros. apparently it didnt OCCUR to him that his pathetically transparent precamp decision that collaros was a STARTER didnt magically increase the latters TALENT to a sufficient level!

      • Puck Hog // August 3, 2018 at 2:36 am //

      • But it didn’t. Esks deserve full marks. The had the eye of the tiger

      • Evil Empire // August 3, 2018 at 2:10 am //

        @greenrider89.

Way to come correct. I appreciate most of your post. But, there’s no arrogance in what I said.

Literally, go back through the Eskimo game threads. I’ve not made fun of anybody we’ve beat. And, am always humble in victory, or defeat.

But, don’t start talking shite pre-game. Unless you’re ready to eat crow, post-game.

Are you happy with Jones, and your offence ? I’m not even piling on. Simply stating facts to refute the shite talk of Rider Nation.

If your defence is ALL you have. The only two West opponents you’ve faced so far. Have proven that it is not good enough to beat a solid team.

I didn’t predict a blow out. And, I’ve not gone overboard celebrating the win.

The Eskimos beat the Riders in Commonwealth Stadium.

Remarkably, that’s exactly what I predicted.

        • Green Apples // August 3, 2018 at 2:13 am //

          Pansy Empire. You’re a good.

        • And don’t tell me you haven’t talked shit with that inbred crap. Get off your damn high horse and grow up. I commended your team in victory and you have to rub it in. The only pre-game shit I talked about was defending the Riders from the crap that was going on. 4Look who’s talking. Don’t act like a kid. Be an adult and take a victory as such.

        • Evil. Man you have a big filthy mouth. Yes you are arrogant and jealous beyond belief. You need a shrink in the worst way. Fkn grow-up

Lol sliders fans love to dish it out but can’t take it,sliders fans are the biggest instigators in pre-game trash talk ,they get on a one or two game winning streak and they are like “watch out were coming after you” like woahhhhh oh no we’re scared of the 4 th place sliders like get real and grow up slidernation

          • (LOL) If we are the biggest instigators for pre-game trash, then why are you on the website constantly throwing your garbage at Rider fans and our team before every game?

        • Really? “bring it” and “come at me”? This isn’t Jersey Shore. Not humble at all. You are Red and A51 in one; Hard-on for the Riders, (welcome to the fan-base) and gleefully pointing out how correct your predictions are.

    • Bleeding Green // August 3, 2018 at 1:59 am //

It was a good game bro. Not a blowout. You’re starting to sound like Red.

    • EE – your team won the battle and Riley pulled it out. It was a good close entertaining game. The other day it was “come at me bro” and today it’s “bring it” ??

C’mon man – it’s football, not the fast and furious or whatever the hell you’re watching? Good win.

  14. Riders played a decent game. The outcome could’ve been different without the command centre overruling a touchdown “without” conclusive evidence. Unfortunately, the call didn’t work the Riders’ way. Defence was solid. Collaros showed why he is the No. 1 quarterback. Carter proved why he should be involved in the offensive scheme of things. A game the Riders could’ve won and proved they are just as good as any team in the west other than Calgary. Calgary is the class of the CFL. Good game, Riders!!!

    • Lets take pole.
Based on the last angle TSN showed, do you think there was conclusive evidence to overturn?
I vote YES, because I have eyes.

      • And I saw the replay, too. And I also saw where Duane Forde drew a line directly where the edge of the cone of the football was perpendicular to the plane of the goal line. And I recall Forde saying that it could be a touchdown from the best angle of view.

        • MMMMMMMMM……
I don’t think Ford’s line was all that precise.
It was close to be sure, but it was a couple inches shy.
(that’s what my ex says too)
That aside, the riders still obtained the lead a few minutes later but couldn’t close it. That’s what good teams (like Edmonton) do

      • Riders4Last // August 3, 2018 at 2:14 am //

I agree with you it was clear that his knee was down and no td proper call was made to overturn the call

      • Red, I’ll let you take your pole if you’re into that kind of thing, the rest of us will take a poll.

      • you need to take that pole up your
unless, of course, you are talking about poll, you don’t need to vote, just say no

      • What the hell do you want with a “pole”? Are you a dancer?

        • Or do you you mean “Pole” as in “Polak”…the brothers. Oh, I get it, like you have a craving for borscht or pierogi…or something like that…right?

Why is it you people always blame the refs after a loss? Not a peep when you win. The Bombers lost 2 games on the last play of the game because they could not close. Those are the breaks.

      • Read, “command centre”. I’m not blaming the refs. They called a touchdown. The command centre overruled the call. There has to be conclusive evidence of a touchdown. Was there conclusive evidence? I don’t think so.

And that is the breaks as I mentioned, “Unfortunately, the call didn’t work the Riders way.”

  15. Pennyrocker // August 3, 2018 at 1:57 am //

It was a close game for the Rider Boys. The Riders shut down Reilly most of the game. Just look at Reilly percentage. The Riders need to finish strong and have a desire to win which is lacking in the final moments.

    • Reilly started the contest completing 4-13 for 186 yards including a 61-yard pass and run. He ended up 13-27 for 257 yards. Collaros actually outperformed Reilly completing 22-34 for 261 yards. Each quarterback had one touchdown. The Riders played a decent game at a rival stadium. Saskatchewan can return the favour in early-October at home.

      • Micky Slept // August 3, 2018 at 5:06 pm //

Wrong. Reilly also had a rushing TD. He also got a W. Looks like he played better than Collaros lol

        • I’m talking about passing, not Reilly’s selfish 1-yard runs. Where was C.J. Gable? He is a helluva lot better at bulling in for touchdowns.

          • RiderFansEatCrayons // August 4, 2018 at 1:05 am //

Lol selfish? Reilly doesn’t call the plays you imbecile. And if Gable was better than Reilly sneaking, don’t you think they would call that play instead? Are you just jealous that your QBs are incapable of getting in to the endzone like Reilly is on a sneak? Hahahaha

Evil Empire, you mean where are the mouth pieces, probably crying in their low grade discounted pilsner beer. Commonwealth was noisy tonight, Rider fans will probably try to take credit for that. Chrissie Jones is a DC and nothing more

    • you need a shrink as well. Things change over time. There will come a time when the Eskimoes are bottom feeders again. Than the fun strats

  17. A STEELY HARD fought battle between the two western clubs making for a highly professional and suspenseful contest. Congratulations to all those involved because that’s entertainment !!

  18. Regina can thank Zach Collaros for saving the team from being blown out tonight.

If Brando Bridge had started, the Riders would have been shut out.

    • I will agree with that Areola. Collaros went beyond one read and pocket confusion. A few plays made the difference – well played Edmonton. Once again, Reilly put his head down and did what he does best.

    • LOL! Sure buddy, whatever you say…and Collaros in the process “improved” his record as a starter in his last 15 games to what, 1-14? Wait, check that, 1-13 instead…I forgot he didn’t make it to the end of the Ottawa game so that one game theoretically doesn’t count.

  19. Riding the Horse… the horse is riding you!

  20. Puck Hog // August 3, 2018 at 2:48 am //

Riders made Reilly look pretty ordinary. Riders offence was much better tonight with Zach, but still needs to stretch the field more. It was a good game, with a couple of plays that could have flipped the game. Riders D have some great hitters and great athletes. Tonight Zach has given hope that he can lead this offence. In a way, too bad we are heading into a bye week.

    • WTF was the confusion having Moncrief listed rather than Elam ??? He played a great game last week and could have stuffed some of those runs. Couldn’t play tonight because of a clerical error – jebus Riders, be better than that!!

      • That was totally bush league. Someone’s head should roll for that. We were without our starting SAM because of that. That’s an important document. It should be checked and double checked before it’s sent, probably by a second party. There is NO excuse for that.

      • Patience // August 3, 2018 at 4:01 am //

One of the biggest staffs in the league (if not the biggest) and they don’t have a capable person to send the proper roster in? What are they going to do next year when the size of the staff is mandated to be smaller? I have watched football for a lot of years but have never heard of such a thing. Way to go Riders.

        • Bleeding Green // August 4, 2018 at 10:25 pm //

Get a normal sized staff that can run a football team just like everybody else in the league…

  21. I was intending to offer congratulations to the Esks and their fans for a good win, but due to the amount of ignorant comment refusing to give credit for a solid close game I think I’ll keep it to myself. Sportsmanship is apparently a dead virtue. Enjoy your win nonetheless.

    • Puck Hog // August 3, 2018 at 8:59 am //

Hey, there’s only two or three ignorant Esks fans on here, emulating the troll, Red. They are planning the GC parade because they beat the Riders, which is no easy feat. Of course there are a lot of good Esks fans out there, but they choose to stay away from this site because of the aforementioned idjuts.

  22. 1. Reilly is the ONLY thing that keeps that team from imploding and Maas’ head from exploding – which I would looove to see.

    2. Why has no one in the all-great NFL picked-up Reilly? Given what I see from a lot of teams in that league, they need him badly. Just shows you what the NFL knows.

    • He was a Packer for at least a pre-season I think. But you’re right, he is that entire Esks team. Yes they have some great receivers, but without Reilly, they aren’t catching anything. I wonder if he gets a call this offseason…

      • You can’t be serious with such an asinine statement.

You won’t find a bigger Mike Reilly fan than me, but the guy will be THIRTY-FOUR (34) years old next year.

WTF would an NFL team bring in a rookie QB that old?

    • I would buy a premium front-row ticket to watch Maas’ bald head explode. In reference to Mike Reilly, Reilly is a great but selfish quarterback. As I’ve mentioned before, inside the two-yard line he has to punch the ball in himself even if he has a bull running back in C.J. Gable. I guess Reilly just loves padding his statistics and then looks forward to telling his grandkids how many touchdowns he scored during his career. Such a wonderful selfish man.

      • Micky Slept // August 3, 2018 at 5:03 pm //

You realize that Reilly isn’t the offensive coordinator… right? Please tell me you aren’t that stupid to think that. The Esks run a hurry up offense because it doesn’t allow the defense to bring in a big package on the goalline. A lot of times the Esks get there on non jumbo packages that aren’t built for a run play, only a QB sneak.

        • Yes, I do realize that. And you don’t have to be a smart ass to mention that. Reilly and Maas have a package worked out at the goal line along with other packages as well. No team comes in with just one package. Reilly has assumed the responsibility of running that one package “all” the time. He is a quarterback. He can audible calls (as you are probably aware). And yes, I do know the game quite well and have played a fair bit of football in my day. I’ve also had nephews and cousins that played junior football with the Saskatoon Hilltops and most recently, the Regina Thunder.

          • RiderFansEatCrayons // August 4, 2018 at 1:07 am //

So you should probably realize that the QB sneak is a play that is ran quite often on the goal line… are you just mad that your team seems incapable of running it as effective as Reilly does? Hahaha

          • No kidding. You really know your football, don’t you? You’re not related to Dave by any chance?

  23. Pluses for the Riders:
-Our passing game is totally different with Collaros. He and his receivers weren’t on the same page a few times, and there some routes that were too short, and a few other issues that will get worked out, so it will only improve from here.
-Nick freakin’ Marshall. Pretty much shut down the top receiver in the league. It’s funny that in 2014 while at Auburn the QB who was passing to Williams was … Nick Marshall.

    Minuses for the Riders:
-Dan Clark. Two more bad snaps tonight and maybe three. No push up the middle. We’ve gone through stretches like this before when we had trouble converting 2nd/3rd and 1, and it was always when Dan Clark was at C. At least he didn’t take any bad penalties this game. Not nearly good enough from a 10 year vet.

  24. Evil Empire // August 3, 2018 at 6:11 am //

    @Puck Hog.

LMAO, straighten out, or go to bed, because you’re drunk.

Quit freaking lying, while you’re at it, alright.

    I said EXACTLY THIS…

“ he, and his receivers have a “ VERY MEDIOCRE “ game “ ( Damn straight I’ll quote within a quote for that shite ).

    And, then you said.

“ Wrong. Reilly had a mediocre game tonight.“

    Wait…What ?

I said “ VERY MEDIOCRE “. You said “ mediocre “. And, you’re arguing with me ? My critique of Reilly, and his receivers is exponentially harsher than yours.

Are you insane ? It’s literally right there in black, and white. Why are you in here right CRYING now, ffs ?

    • Evil Empire // August 3, 2018 at 6:13 am //

      * Why are you in here crying right now, ffs ?

      • Puck Hog // August 3, 2018 at 9:19 am //

Orville, looks like you’re the one having an angry cry. And this is after a win? I do t know why you are gloating so much over beating such a poor team. Perhaps it’s because you’re JEALOUS about Canada’s favourite team. Better get a hobby to keep your mind off everything Riders. Otherwise, it looks like your gonna get eaten up by Rider Nation.

      • GreenInCalgary // August 3, 2018 at 12:37 pm //

I suppose the Rider D had nothing to do with his mediocre game. The Riders are improving every game and its still a long season. I get sad every time I come on this to see the hate and anger being spewed by EE, A51 and whatever the guy from Calgary is calling himself at any given time. Reminds me of Linda Blair in the exorcist, with her head spinning and vomit spewing from her mouth. Maybe that is the problem, perhaps you fellas are possessed by your hatred of the Riders and our fans.

    • Puck Hog // August 3, 2018 at 9:11 am //

Look, Big Boss Man, gyhas! You better take it easy before you have an aneurism, lol!. Next time you use a quote, perhaps you should use the entire sentence. These are your actual words: “ Mike Reilly is literally the biggest “ X “ factor in the league. Not too often does he, and his receivers have a very mediocre game.” So take it easy, you angry misfit!

  25. Mr Curling was way happy with the game. Looked more like the season opener than the last few weeks.can someone tell me where area 51 is located? The latrene in Mr Curling’s limo needs dumping

    • Provemewrong // August 3, 2018 at 1:36 pm //

Mr hurling. Vegerville is a latrine. No need to go looking for area 51.

    • He’s busy pounding his chest reciting his laurels of choke Collaros…apparently 1-14 in your last 15 starts earns you the moniker of “franchise” QB…LOL!

  26. Hahahahah // August 3, 2018 at 9:27 am //

Edmonton didn’t win this game the riders lost it, some of the play calling and the fact edomonton had a full offensive drive fuelled by penalties, watch Edmonton’s offensive line when Reilly was running for his life, the holding calls were atrocious but yet no calls were made

  27. Bombsquad // August 3, 2018 at 9:38 am //

Game could have went either way, but same as last years EDF the Riders couldn’t stop a game winning drive when the game was on the line. All they had to do was hold the Esks to a field goal and they couldn’t. This gives another piece of evidence that while Jones defence can be real good at times, it isn’t when the game is on the line. Hats off to Mike Reilly though, he proved once again why he’s one of the best.

  28. Evil Empire // August 3, 2018 at 9:57 am //

BTW. There were some sketchy calls by the officials. But, I’ll be damned. The Command Centre got EVERY single review right.

It was nice to see it being 100% impartial. I was texting my dad back in Canada. He was tripping about the throw to Williams where he caught it. Then got up off the turf to score an apparent major, because the play was not whistled dead.

I had to calm him down. I believed in real time that Williams was down. Sure enough, the replay clearly showed Williams being down by contact.

I swear… Get the review right. Whether it works for, or against my team.

    Just… GET IT RIGHT…EVERY TIME.

That is why review exists. In many recent years they couldn’t get even the most obvious of calls right. I was surprised by a cpl reviews. I expected … It was called this way on the field. There is not 100% proof the onfield officials got it wrong. So, the call on the field stands.

But, they actually overturned calls, and got it right 100% in this game.

The best performance by the CC, that I can recall.

  29. Riding the Horse // August 3, 2018 at 10:00 am //

    God bless rider fans
Only they can make a loss sound like a win!
    Interesting spins

  30. Solara2000 // August 3, 2018 at 10:02 am //

Have to say the Riders looked more competent under ZC’s as QB than at any other time. He definitely showed flashes of his best seasons with TiCats. He deserved a better result than a loss. Some extremely poor coaching and pla-calling decisions.

On a related front, I think it is obvious why a HC can’t also be a Coordinator. Jones was the DC period when they needed a HC.

  31. Reality of Friday morning:
Riders are heading into the bye week sub .500, which I would assume is disappointing, based on all your expectations.
They only teams you have beat are Hamilton and Toronto- not exactly the creme de la creme of Canadian football! Of the upper echelon, you are now 0-3.

    • Reality of Friday morning – you still have no life and are right back licing on Rider threads. Booted twice in 24 hrs and here again! You just don’t get the message – never will.

    • Sociopath Red, you seem to be fretting about the Riders way more than the Rider fans. Oh well, I hope you don’t lose too much sleep over this, haha.

  32. Scottsask // August 3, 2018 at 10:26 am //

Good game all around. Riders still need to clean up pre snap penalties, which should not be happening at this time of year. Collaros looked decent, stood in the pocket and delivered the ball. Now for the bad. The receivers need to deepen their routes-past 5 yards, the o line still isn’t great. We were stuffed on the goal line on 2 different drives., which would have been a swing of 14 points. Bad clock management st the end of the game, and a clerical error keeping us short handed on defense? Inexcusable. Lastly Defense played great as usual as well as the coverage teams. Simply list to the better team.

    • I wouldn’t say the Esks are the better team. In fact I think we learned in this game that the Esks AREN’T the better team. They were just a little bit better on this night. What was the clock management issue?

      • Provemewrong // August 3, 2018 at 1:39 pm //

RDF The Esks BEAT you, Thus they are the BETTER team. What a small minded slider thing to say.

  33. riderontheisland // August 3, 2018 at 10:55 am //

Feel pretty good about this game. Zac played well and will only get better. The D gave up a couple of big plays and one stupid catch by Walker ,but nothing you can do on that one.

  34. The schedule makers were kind to the riders the first half of this season. After the 19th game, the riders will have had 5 home VS only 3 road games. That means the second half of season will be road intensive for the riders where they haven’t been as good!
This, combined with 5 straight eastern games to start, was the time for the riders to really make hay. They didn’t. Now what?

    • Pino Nuwar // August 3, 2018 at 11:06 am //

On the other hand, the second half the season is when the Riders have their starting quarterback back on the roster, some injured players are starting to come back, and Duron Carter is back playing receiver. As long as the team continues to improve as they face harder opponents, they should be able to crank out a few wins.

With BC improving and the Stampeders becoming a bit more beat up, I expect that we’ll see a tighter West division these coming games.

      • Thanks for talking football Pino. Clearly you are a Stamp fan who has an appreciation and an understanding of football. Unlike the mosquito that keeps buzzing around here discracing your fan base.

    • And such a favorable schedule. That was the 2nd game played 5 days after previous game probably because some schmuck im Toronto wants the Riders on their new big promo Thursday night football.

  35. Margaret Marshall // August 3, 2018 at 11:08 am //

Congratulations to the Eskimos for your win last night. Riders played better with Collaros as quarterback. I agree with ScotSask that there are things that should have jelled at this point in the season. Penalties also and time management issues. Collaros will become more comfortable and things will improve although the o line needs attention and inexplicably doesn’t get it. Inexcusable about the roster mix up. Careless. Riders need to make changes on the I line and look at a more adventurous passing game to remain competitive. Collaros has the skill just needs the game plan

    • O-line, especially tackle and centre, are our biggest problem. Need some help up front and more chemistry to make it work. But if Collaros has time, doesn’t need to run for his life and holes for the running backs to scoot through, we can improve immensely offensively with a solid game plan. Remains to be seen.

  36. Here’s something I haven’t seen mentioned. After the clerical error that kept Elam out Edem was moved to SAM and MOB to S, but MOB was knocked out with a concussion on the first play so Antigha played S for most of the rest of the game.

  37. What Collaros needs more than a “game plan” is a competent OLine.

The squirt gun offence can’t block long enough for any kind of deep or intermediate routes – – so all they’ve got are screens and swing passes.

  38. Riding the Horse // August 3, 2018 at 11:37 am //

The riders fielded their very best offense last night with all their chosen day 1 starters playing. They scored 19 points. With potential (and inevitable) injuries, it can only go down.
That’s as good as it gets.

  39. Esksfan_81 // August 3, 2018 at 12:12 pm //

Sat behind the Riders bench last night and Jones is losing that football team. Every series players were coming off the field Jones was yelling at someone but every time they just walked by and payed no attention. Jones big American head will cause the Riders to self implode.

    • Wow…you are talking about JONES yelling?!? That is really rich coming from someone who surely must’ve been able to see the coach across the field throwing an industrial-strength tantrum while at the same time chucking around a Gatorade cooler big enough to merit a building-permit! Maybe you could suggest to your own team’s coach that losing it as he routinely does could potentially destroy his ability to make a rational coaching decision at a critical time, if his emotions constantly get the better of him.

    • Carter is speaking out on twitter about the coaching

    • riderontheisland // August 3, 2018 at 12:53 pm //

Eskfan, save the BS man he was mic’d up so we heard what Jones had to say and no has not lost the team. Actually they look pretty comfortable together. Sorry you can’t play the “I was there card” here.

    • Good thing you didn’t sit behind the Edmonton bench – might have been hit by a Gatorade jug

      • I wish I could sit behind the Edmonton bench…I’d ask Maas when he plans to pay back the TC organization the $300,000 he stole in 2006/07 pretending to be their starting QB.

        • There are some QB’s going back decades in the TC organization that sucked…but Maas SUCKED the most…Printers coming a close second…but not by much.

  40. Pennyrocker // August 3, 2018 at 12:22 pm //

Before you start shooting off your mouth as to how good Reilly is I see a team that got lucky.

First off Reilly had a 48% completion where as Collaros had a 68% completion. Reilly had gotten sacked 4 times. Eskies only out rushed the Riders by 16 yards. The Rider in passing were equal on catches and had more yards tacked on by 53 yards. What hurt the Rider were penalties and questionable calls.

Also Jones did not play his second back up when it came time out in Watford and therefore lied to the public when he said that both QBs would play. Jones to me is someone who has something against Canadian QBs and reverts their efforts to make it as QBs.

    • Micky Slept // August 3, 2018 at 5:09 pm //

Lol how is it that Reilly had the same amount of passing TDs and basically yards as collaros on far fewer passes? Reilly goes for the win and is willing to air the ball out. If he wanted to he could throw 4 yard passes all game like the Riders do and have his usual 70-80% completion percentage, but he is willing to sacrifice his numbers for the W… the most important stat.

  41. Wayne Kenov // August 3, 2018 at 12:50 pm //

Can’t Riders fans just be happy to have been in a competitive football game with that team? Not sure if the Riders fans or Leafs fans are more annoying and delusional. What happened to Collaros though? He was actually a good QB at this time 2 years ago. It was like overnight erosion. If I’m SAS, I am calling the Argos for Franklin, and I give them whatever they ask for.

Not sure why they would play this game on a thursday when they know Sask fans will want to drive in. Calgary and Sask should be on Saturday night or sunday afternoon, the rest can go whatever day. Not sure why I have to tell the league that. The two franchises who draw about 8000 more fans than average, and about 5000 more than the next best team and are mostly within driving distance in the only stadium that can support about 60000 people.

Eskimos Oline had a rough night, but are among the best in the league, so I’m not overly concerned. Quake has filled the Willis gap pretty well imo. The O Line had a rough outing, but are typically one of the best units in the league, so I’ll give them a pass. Lucky to have a workhorse like Gable tonight. Dual RB package was a good look; really like Robinson. The secondary is still a concern, and I don’t think Grymes is the lockdown guy he once was, at least not the other teams top dog.

Video review worked pretty well in the two thursday games imo, just need to get the time requirement down. The Toronto game dragged on forever, and there were some noticeable lulls in the Edmonton game as well.

  42. Enjoyed the game… nice to see Collaros get back out there. Reilly is bar none, the absolute top QB in the CFL. The best thing about the game was seeing an NFL sized massive audience at the game on TV. Have to hand it to Edmonton fans – you are awesome.

    • Well and Rider fans. There was a ton of the other Green in the stands too. It was definitely two tone green stands last night. You can actually here the Riders fans when the Defense was on the field. Great game to watch though, wish we would have took it, but its all good. The Esks are a very good team.

      • Riding the Horse // August 3, 2018 at 1:16 pm //

There were approx 5000 rider fans.

        • I know your numbers are wrong, but lets use them anyways. That’s almost 25% of the your average home attendance. I’d say that’s pretty damn good for us being on the road(even know I know there was probably more there). I bet you you guys wish you could get that kind of support with your team.

          • Provemewrong // August 3, 2018 at 1:45 pm //

Yea its great when your population has to move away from where they were born just to make a living.

          • We are having no problem filling the stands in our city/province plus everyone else. Wish I could say the same to the rest of the teams. What’s their excuse?
Also Saskatchewan has one of the highest GDP in Canada.. and the biggest GDP growth in the future. You are about 20-30 years behind.

          • Of course you guys never account for the fact so many Saskatonians move to Alberta. It’s not like you all travel there just for the game!

          • Obviously you know very little about the Rider fans. We travel further than any fan to attend games. Whether in province or not. I’m in multiple Rider fan pages right now that have more people in them than your average attendance at Mcdump. And I know for a fact there is a ton of these people that travel for road games.

          • No doubt a few do travel. But I’m pretty sure the vast majority of riders fans at Commonwealth last night, were living in Edmonton or surrounding area

          • Again you don’t know anything about Rider fans. So why comment? Being pretty sure is where you go wrong. You are “pretty sure” about everything you say. Which 95% of the time is wrong.

          • Fine,,,so what are the numbers? How many traveled to the game???

          • It’s more than a “few” As you so loosely put it.

          • RobE, Edmonton can get 32-33,000 for a good western opponent, Saskatchewan fans get to the stadium because a lot of them live in Edmonton, if Edmontonians lived in Regina I would expect the same but doubt if there is much of a presence there, traditionally our big crowds are the labor day rematch (60,000 plus)where we hold regular season records.I recall the 2002 game that sold out at 62,000 and Hugh Campbell telling the gate to charge $10 to get in and them to find a place to stand

  43. They moved out of the goodness of their heart to help the obviously challenged Albertans who have no clue how to run an economy. Go look at the CEO’s of the top Alberta companies. 75% are Sask. transplants. The True Albertans are the rig piggers, while the Sask transplants are the brains behind the Alberta economy.

    • Provemewrong // August 3, 2018 at 2:03 pm //

I guess you are still living in Regina!!!

    • lol
yeah, I’m sure they all moved here out of the goodness of their hearts! They sacrificed their own province, risked everything and moved here, just to help Alberta- Had nothing to do with weighing the opportunities in both places!
      WOW!!!

      • Puck Hog // August 3, 2018 at 2:59 pm //

Yes, Sask folks have moved to Alberta for opportunities for many years. It’s too bad, as these good folks made Alberta what it is today. They took with them to Alberta smarts, a good work ethic and and a sense of civic pride. They became politicians, lawyers, business owners. I have a business in Alberta. Alberta gave back to them and me, and the Alberta people are good people. Not represented at all by the few hypocrites who post on here. This is a football forum, and some dumb bums want to use infantile references to socio-economic ideas. Oooh boy! Stick to football, you juveniles. And when you do reference economic conditions, remember that the economy goes in cycles, and where it is good now doesn’t mean it will be good in 10 or 20 years. Alberta has a lot going for it, and it still isn’t good enough for some sad-sack morons. Perhaps they should get jobs. Over and out.

    • I think that you’ve been watching too many Duck Dynasty episodes

  44. Provemewrong // August 3, 2018 at 2:02 pm //

Robiie. What are you smoking. Ontario’s GDP is 790,835 (2016) million, saskabush is just ahead of PEI with 75,261 million (2016) That’s WHY the smart % of your population LEAVES!!!!

    • Have you actually done any reading in the past 20 years? We are sitting 4th in Canada with our GDP. And are expected to be growing 2.7% each year in the coming years. Nice of you to bring a 2016 study in a 2018 almost 2019 topic. *slow clap* Also lets not forget how far Ontario is in dept and the population is how much bigger than ours. We are sending equalization payments to the east, and they have no problems taking them apparently. 😉

  45. He’s talking per capita you fool.Your Alberta roots are shining through Derrick hand.

    • Provemewrong // August 3, 2018 at 2:53 pm //

Wipeout. Per capita is just giving Sk GDP a shinny coat. It is a pittance when compared to ON, QC, AB, BC GDP. Like I said, just ahead of PEI… FOOL!!!

      • If you must know BC is by far the top dog of Canada. That place is on a boom of a epic proportions. ON(massive dept beyond repair), QC(massive dept and handouts), AB(massive dept building, Thanks to NDP).

  46. Get real // August 3, 2018 at 2:26 pm //

Just a note as to Edmonton’s O line. One of the starters was injured so there were adjustments made and some were playing out of position. The injured player was Sorenson, their center, who is on a one game injury list.

  47. Mike Reilly is the best. Bar none!

  48. Mike Rielly // August 3, 2018 at 3:37 pm //

I love you too 3Down Staff, I love you too.

  49. the only good thing i see here is that many handles has another name banned

  50. Mike did not have a great game and he will be the first to admit it, yet he ran well and so did CJ Gable. D Walk, Stafford and Williams were all special when they needed to be on the Esk big play offense. However it was the defense keeping the Riders to under 20 and stuffing a TD for a turnover on downs led by Almondo Sewell that was special. That broke the Riders minds so much so they want to prove they could go on 3rd down and ended up getting pressure that caused another turnover on downs. Esks defense broke the Riders offense.

  51. Collarus wouldn’t take the hit to make a play , that’s the big difference between the two QB’s. Looks good on paper that he didn’t get sacked though, not !!!

    • Pennyrocker // August 4, 2018 at 3:27 pm //

Eskies stop on the goal line was a direct result of Jones not willing to send in Bridge who is the second string QB. Jones talk a good game with Bridge and the does everything possible to derail him.
