Terrell Owens triggers 10-day clause, indicating interest in CFL

Receiver Terrell Owens activated the 10-day window that will force the Edmonton Eskimos to offer him a contract or release his rights on July 14, per sources.

The move by Owens is a sign he’s interested in coming to play in the CFL.

The Eskimos added Owens to their negotiation list on June 19.

Under CFL rules, any player on a team’s exclusive 45-man negotiation list can demand to be offered a contract within 10 days.  If a contract offer is not received within that period, the player is removed from the neg list. If a contract offer is received but rejected, the player is removed from the list one year from the offer date.

Edmonton could offer Owens a two-year contract – all entry contracts are one-year plus a team held option – at the league minimum of $54,000 per season and retain his rights until into the 2019 season. Edmonton-based agent Jason Staroszik is handling the CFL negotiations for Owens.

The 44-year-old Owens has not played in a professional game since 2010 with the Cincinnati Bengals. But he can still run – fast, clocking a 4.43 40-yard dash.

In 2012 he played eight games with the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League making 35 receptions for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Seattle Seahawks signed Owens during training camp in 2012 but released him a few weeks later. Owens captained and played for the self-named Team Owens in the inaugural game of the American Flag Football League last June.

During 16 NFL seasons, Owens had 15,934 career receiving yards which rank second all-time in NFL history and 153 receiving touchdowns put him third. He was a five-time first-team All-Pro in the NFL. Owens was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2018 class.

Can’t imagine the Esks will be offering him a contract. They seem to be set up fine with the receivers they have now, and I can’t see TO being better than any of them after being away from the pro ranks for so long. TO also has attitude problems.

    • Paul Bomber // July 17, 2018 at 9:39 am //

I dunno… they must have had a reason for putting on their neg list, don’t they?

  2. They should sign him then trade him to Saskatchewan… can you imagine Carter and Owens competing for all the media attention…

  3. Has to be a joke or publicity stunt. He is not capable of playing and taking the punishment of real games.

    • MoneyTeam // July 16, 2018 at 8:45 pm //

Who knows whatll happen, but he recently ran a 4.4 40yrd dash and hes pretty jacked. Cant imagine he’s lost his hands unless is reaction time is worse than when he was younger. Think it prob becomes a question of how quickly his body can recover. No NFL team would take him at his age, but hes going to face smaller players in the CFL so not sure how much punishment he will take that could be deemed “too much” for his body. If Andre Rison can play here at 38, why can’t TO play here at 44?

The Riders worked out Johnny Manzeil on Christmas Day in Regina.

Days inn way too pricey!!, seen Chris hanging out with Red at Chateau Regina’s swimming pool. More awkwardly Chris was sporting a banana hammock.

I’ve told all. It’s the Holiday Inn Express. They have the free waffle bar and the best AC for those waffle sweats

  7. Stampvestite // July 16, 2018 at 10:34 pm //

I could just see Owens looking for the weight room at McMahon and then having to move the lawnmower before he can use the treadmill.

    • Stampeder Summer // July 16, 2018 at 10:41 pm //

Well, if he’s wanting to play for a team that reminds him of his 49er days, Calgary is the best fit…..
If he want’s the Cincinnati Bengal experience, go to Sask

      • Stampvestite // July 16, 2018 at 10:52 pm //

Calgary is more loke the Buffalo Bills

        • Stampeder Summer // July 16, 2018 at 10:58 pm //

Because the Bills have been dominant for the last 30 years and have 5 championships in that time?

          • Stampvestite // July 16, 2018 at 11:00 pm //

            Zero championship rings.

          • The Bills went to four championship games from 1991-1995, lost them all and have been terrible ever since. The Bills made the playoffs last year for the first time since 1999, snapping an eighteen-year playoff drought. If that’s what you consider “dominant”, it’s no wonder you said the current Stampeder era is a “dynasty”.

      • There we go. Handle #36

    • The lawnmower powers the treadmill.

      • Stampeder Summer // July 17, 2018 at 12:30 pm //

And of course there’s no ventilation in crappy old McMahon for the exhaust, so we do the best we can with fans.

  8. Stampeder Summer // July 16, 2018 at 11:16 pm //

    0 Rings
    That’s laughable
    And a factually inaccurate comparison

  9. Stampvestite // July 16, 2018 at 11:23 pm //

If you think the Bills have been dominant over the last 30 years, you are out to lunch. Really proves your diagnosis.

    • Stampeder Summer // July 16, 2018 at 11:44 pm //

I don’t think that! But you clearly do if you are comparing them the the Stampeders.

      • its the choking in the big game comparison. So by that, Baby Bo levi is the Jim Kelly of the CFL haha

        • Suckatewan // July 17, 2018 at 8:15 am //

Isnt that what Ronnie and George did , crumble and choke when it mattered, yet their the pride of Suckatchewan

  10. An Esks contract offer will put pressure on TO to sign. If he waits another year, he might be seen to be approaching the point where he is arguably, slightly … past his prime.

  11. This guy is a major problem and a career killer, including his own. Stay away fro him.

  12. I was just joining your conversation. You were the one who compared them to an NFL team.

  13. Steve J. // July 16, 2018 at 11:56 pm //

He’s 44 years old. Are you kidding me?

  14. Just saying // July 17, 2018 at 12:52 am //

Just the idea of Eskimos putting him on the negotiation list is them clearly stating to the NFL that that the CFL sucks.

  15. Seriously
I hope the Eskimos do not do this. It’s so beneath the Evil Empire.
This is a rider move, not an Eskimo move

    • maybe the stumpeders should sign him. Then they could sell some merchandise. The riders need no help with that. The proceeds could be used to build a new garbage dump…sorry i mean mcman stadium. and with baby bo as the face of the franchise, they will name it mcmaam

    • Stampvestite // July 17, 2018 at 9:18 am //

      Like Akili Smith

  17. Bestcflfan // July 17, 2018 at 1:18 am //

    One word
    Ochocinco

    • MoneyTeam // July 17, 2018 at 9:55 am //

He wasnt great here, but he also wasnt running a 4.4 40yd dash. He also got hurt so only played in like 2 games. Doesnt mean TO will have success if he shows up, but I feel they’re 2 totally different cases.

      • Best CFL FAN // July 17, 2018 at 2:21 pm //

Didn’t show up for 2d year of his contract. Spent next year on the suspended list. Was dressed for over half the games but rarely thrown to. Of course Troy Smith couldn’t hit the side of a barn ( forget the door).

And now that I think about it I wonder if his injury was phony. Troy Smith‘s injury was phony -they put him on the nine game injury list after they discovered he couldn’t play for s—t and got him out of the salary cap even tho no injury suffered. ( must’ve guaranteed him one year )

        • MoneyTeam // July 17, 2018 at 3:39 pm //

I dont think TO is going to be the #1 target, if he makes the team. I just think he and Ochocinco are 2 different cases based purely on current state of athleticism. Though, I don’t have much proof other than TO’s 40 time haha, just an assumption I am making.

  18. Nice to see CFL getting lots of attention down south. They are thinking of it as a solid option.

Having said that… Vince Young, Josh Freeman, Michael Sam, Ochocinco and a bunch of others had their lunches handed to them.

    • MoneyTeam // July 17, 2018 at 9:58 am //

I hear that, its a shame when most of these guys show up obv past their prime and just can’t play anymore. That said, VY/Ochocinco both got hurt so that ended that, would have been nice to see the injury not happen and if they could actually play the game. Sam gave up after 1 game. Freeman just couldnt hack it.

      • Best CFL FAN // July 17, 2018 at 2:25 pm //

Sam was completely outclassed in his start. Not for nothing not drafted toNFL.

        • MoneyTeam // July 17, 2018 at 3:37 pm //

Yeah he was outclassed, but call a spade a spade – dude had been with the team for like 2-3 weeks and only played like 10 snaps that game before he quit. Not saying he was guaranteed success but he gave up before he even actually tried. That’s just an attitude/effort thing on his part.

  19. Wow! C’moon man!!!

  20. When’s the lunch lady gunna sign in stump village!?!?

  21. Evil Empire // July 17, 2018 at 3:20 am //

As CFL contracts are not guaranteed, it would be silly not to offer him one. Why add him to the neg list if you had absolutely NO interest in him ? I can’t see offering him alot up front, but who knows. That’s Sunderland’s job.

Sign him, and bring him up. Get a first hand look at how he looks with Mike Reilly throwing him the ball. If it doesn’t pan out. You just release him.

  23. Tiger man // July 17, 2018 at 7:35 am //

Surprised that the Eskimos have this guy on their list.

T O is more suited to Jim Popp. He prefers players who are well past their prime….

  24. Pennyrocker // July 17, 2018 at 9:39 am //

They still let grandpa play pro ball. He has been out of pro ball how long now. Even named a team after himself course flag football is a really hard game.

  25. Stampeder Summer // July 17, 2018 at 9:55 am //

Whether he comes or not, there will never be a more embarrassing moment for this league than the Vince Young incident. He couldn’t make it out of camp.

    • MoneyTeam // July 17, 2018 at 10:00 am //

He got hurt. My understanding of it he wasn’t showing enough in the time he was here to keep him, but unfortunately we wont know if they woulda kept him if he didnt tear a hammy.

  26. Somebody post “in another year he will, arguably, past…” ARGUABLY? Doesn’t matter how fast he can run, his body will not respond to the physical strain, every week.
BTW, YUP, the lawn mower does not power the treadmill. It was installed before electricity, and the players cautiously avoid the rats on it, cuz they keep it spinning 24/7!

  27. T.O. will sell a few extra tickets for the CFL as I am sure Johnny Manziel has but with the knock out receivers the Eskimos have he is the last player they need on their roster. Johnny M is ready to play big time when it comes. T.O. is not ready to play and might get hurt big time due to his age and not being in football shape.

  28. David Tress // July 17, 2018 at 2:24 pm //

Owens can still run and he can catch. Reilly is the perfect qb to get him the ball.

  29. Tailgate YYC // July 17, 2018 at 4:00 pm //

Doesn’t this remind anyone of the Jaromir Jagr experiment?
