Stamps destroy Redblacks but lose BLM in the process

Lisa Wallace, Canadian Press

The Calgary Stampeders won, again, but they will have to wait to find out if they will lose their quarterback for any amount of time.

Bo Levi Mitchell picked up his 60th career CFL victory as Calgary beat the Ottawa Redblacks 27-3 on Thursday, improving to 4-0 on the season. But the quarterback left the game late in the second quarter with what appeared to be a right knee injury after taking a hit from Danny Mason, who was handed a roughing-the-passer penalty on the play.

He was 16 for 21 for 166 yards and one touchdown when he left for the locker room.

“The update is we need to get some more testing done, I’m not a doctor on that,” said Calgary head coach Dave Dickenson.

“I don’t think it’s going to be anything majorly serious, but there’s been surprises. From what I know they took a look at it him, lower-body injury, I’ll use the hockey term and hopefully we get good news when we get back home.”

Nick Arbuckle finished the game for the Stampeders, going 8 for 14 for 84 yards and one TD. Mitchell did return to the sidelines in the second half and watched while still in uniform.

Ottawa starter Trevor Harris was 14 for 22 for 111 yards and two interceptions.

The Redblacks also used Dominique Davis and Danny Collins at QB, but neither was very successful. Combined the three QB’s had three interceptions and two fumbles.

“Everybody has to be better,” said Harris. “It’s not a game where I think you can point the finger at one guy, but if you need to you can point it at me because that’s what I want to do for my guys and I’ll make sure that we’re better and I’ll step up to the plate for everybody. That’s the responsibility of the quarterback and I’ll take that on my shoulders.”

Redblacks head coach Rick Campbell said his team got beat in every aspect and never found a way to respond.

“We just flat out didn’t respond with making any plays and obviously it’s tough to do when you’re playing a good football team if you don’t do that,” said Campbell. “It’s worrisome that we never came up with any plays to create a spark. I’ve never questioned our guys effort or want to, but we weren’t able to come up with, for whatever reason, anything to give us a spark to counter punch and come back.”

Calgary seemed to put the game away before the break as it held a 20-0 lead after two quarters.

“We’re going to go one week at a time and we’re going to execute week in and week out,” said Calgary linebacker Alex Singleton. “That’s the only way to get back to where we were.”

Ottawa opened the second half with a solid drive that put it on the one-yard line, giving the 22,103 on hand some hope, but a procedure penalty pushed the Redblacks back to the six and they were unable to complete the drive, settling for an 11-yard field goal to trail 20-3.

Arbuckle was able to add to the rout when he found Lemar Durant in the end zone early in the fourth quarter for a 12-yard touchdown making it 27-3.

The Redblacks struggled heavily in the first half.

Ottawa had six straight two and outs, Harris threw two interceptions, Diontae Spencer dropped the ball on a punt return giving Calgary possession deep in Ottawa territory and the defence had few answers for Mitchell and the rest of the Stampeders.

Calgary opened the scoring late in the first half as Mitchell connected with Kamar Jorden on back-to-back passes to set up the Stampeders on Ottawa’s one-yard line where Romar Morris dove across the goal line for his first CFL touchdown. A two-point conversion gave Calgary the 8-0 lead.

The Stampeders extended its lead following Harris’ first interception. Calgary took over at the Ottawa 40-yard line and five plays later Mitchell found Juwan Brescacin for a 10-yard TD pass.

Rene Paredes kicked 17- and 25-yard field goals to give Calgary a 20-0 lead at the half.

    Calgary now sits at 4-0.

There is not a single other team in the league with a winning record.

  2. Stampeding // July 12, 2018 at 10:50 pm //

Early indications are Bo was out for precautionary reasons.
Bo was joking. An MRI needs done but I wouldn’t worry.
Maybe sit him out against Montreal on Saturday.

    Now, on to that game.
If there is a better team than the Calgary Stampeders, they are not playing on this planet.

  3. BigRedMachine // July 12, 2018 at 10:52 pm //

I expect that they will give Bo the night off against Montreal next week….

  4. Is anyone close to Don Jackson for rookie of the year?

  5. Plain and simple…Redblacks were beaten by a much better team…move on.
Kinda concerned about 22,100 attendance..SB sold out…any reasons why???

    • Bluesfest is going on, and several fans are attending the concerts like Naughty by Nature or Blue Rodeo. If Bluesfest wasn’t on, it would have been another sell-out.

Stamps defense will win games with or without BLM.
Hoping BLM is OK to play against Alouettes.

  7. Their big test is July 28

    • Big test will be labour day. We just destroy and team that just destroy you, on the road and with serious injuries.

      • True Green // July 13, 2018 at 12:46 am //

And we just beat a team that should have beat you in your own outhouse.

Any given week, any given team. You know that as well as I do and you also know I show nothing but respect for the quality and success of your team. Why you have to be as obnoxious about your teams success as you are is beyond me.

        • dangnabbit // July 13, 2018 at 1:11 am //

“we just beat a team that should have beat you” You mean Hamilton, I think?

I’d be careful about making claims as to who should have beat whom if I were you. Seems Hamilton dominated the Riders pretty thoroughly and were barely done in by a late defensive collapse.

        • what???? How the hell do you figure Hamilton should have beat us?
          28-14! Thats not even close

Terry, That’s cute you think so, I think you mean Aug 25!. Rider’s will be working with 5th & 6th string QB’s if they don’t fix their O line.

What a great story about Brandon Bridge grabbing the bill and paying for a group of 30 at at restaurant in Regina. Pure class.

    • Stampeding // July 12, 2018 at 11:16 pm //

I don’t blame you for avoiding the topic.
Imagine going into a game without Clark, Roosevelt, a key Canadian on defense and Christon Jones. In the 2nd Quarter you lose whoever your starting QB is. Do you think you walk away with a 27-3 road win???? NOT A CHANCE!
As far as Bridge goes, throwing money around isn’t class. This family was more than capable of paying their own restaurant bill.
You guys have a hard time understanding noble charitable acts and cheap gestures don’t you?

Someone will tie or beat them, and if it’s not in the regular season, it will be either in the cup or West final, and choke when it matters like they always do. BLM will finish his perfect season by walking out of Commonwealth with his tears running like a river in Edmonton, just like the Johnny Lawrence he thinks he is. I give the Stamps a couple of years before they start playing like the rest of the league. BLM and many of the coaching staff and players won’t be around for long. Dickensen may be smart now, but like always, teams always figure you out, like how the Eskies.

        • Storm clouds move into McMahon // July 13, 2018 at 12:37 pm //

and lose in the Grey Cup as usual…just finishing off your thought.

          • lol
All you got to disparage the Stamps is speculation of what will happen in the Grey Cup?
BTW Thanks for confirming your belief that Calgary will play in the Grey Cup.

      • I don’t see BLM doing anything like this. All I see is him getting his ass thrown to the ground by Leonard and Mason. Bridge isn’t throwing money around either or trying to flex on anything. He is simply doing a kind jester, and typically, family meals aren’t always the cheapest. During the cup, he was even handing out Adidas T-shirts to kids. Better than walking off the field with another choke. At least Bridge came out of that week feeling good.

Do you need a hug? How about a friend? Maybe just a little reassurance from time to time that its ok to be you.

        • People who are idolized should not be buying well to do fans meals and movie tickets, its awkward and catalyzes cult like behavior

      • They didn’t lose Trevor Harris, they benched him because he played like hot garbage in the first half (4 for 9, with 17 yards and 2 picks), and they benched him again in the fourth quarter.

  9. MR. Green // July 12, 2018 at 11:16 pm //

I wonder if Ottawa somehow came back a little if Bo would of went back in. He stayed dressed and they said he jogged back out. Arbuckle did what a backup should and never turned the ball over.
A sleeper game might be mentioned next week for Calgary, but not gonna happen.
Ottawa will come back next week and be ok. One of those games for them. These types of loses are humbling.

  10. Just saying // July 12, 2018 at 11:24 pm //

  11. Just saying // July 12, 2018 at 11:28 pm //

i Think tha Brandon bridge thing was pre planed as he is needing something to get people on his side.
And I’m a rider fan. I think it was week if he did! Now Duron Carter doing that would be real.

    • lol
      I wouldn’t go that far.

    • Well, Duron Carter last year, payed for a group of Riders fans tickets to see Justice like in the Eastern Final. Other teams may not like him, which is to be expected, however Duron has always been good to his own fans, and he has treated them well after that one girl has a game ball taken away from her. People may complain, but to me, they are jealous it hasn’t happened to them. Be greatful for the fans and players in this league, because fans on the field after a game, or any such actions like this from players would never happen in the NFL.

      • You are right, this wouldn’t happen in the NFL!
But buying fandom from well do to people is not a charitable act, nor is it a noble gesture

        • Green=Money // July 13, 2018 at 12:54 am //

  12. Paul Bomber // July 12, 2018 at 11:30 pm //

Calgary D was dominent. Ottawa D actually wasn’t awful, they just got no support. I think I’ve been grossly overestimating Harris’ ceiling. He looked no better than so-so again!
    Bo will be ok.

  13. Here’s how you know you’re a good team.
You bench your opponents starting QB twice and their backup twice, forcing them to try their 3rd stringer

    • Stomp the Stamps // July 12, 2018 at 11:58 pm //

You are not a good team. You may speak of your own record, but let’s remember a couple weeks ago, against the same team. Ottawa wasn’t prepared, and their defense was tired after being on the field the majority of the time. Bad play calling was a factor in the loss, when everyone knew Powell was going to be utilized, which is how he was stopped, and Calgary’s Offence didn’t look pretty either. Calgary knows how to pick on a team that doesn’t know how to play zone. If Thorpe was running his aggressive Man, and blitzing plays, and if Elizondo called better plays, it would be much more like the tied games from the past two years. This is the first time Calgary has won in Ottawa since 2014, so don’t get full of yourselves. If you make it to the cup this year, there won’t be anything more than the Western title for the Stamps.

      • lol
Well, he did have 2 ties in there so it’s not that bad.
Keeping thinking Calgary isn’t good if that helps you sleep at night! Yes their defense was tired, thats to our credit!

  14. RicoBeBlue&Gold // July 12, 2018 at 11:55 pm //

We were 7-0 vs the west when it mattered last year. Nothing is changing.
Turns out, we are younger and better this year than last.
4-0 and just getting warmed up. Deal with it

    • BigRedMachine // July 13, 2018 at 12:42 am //

If you didn’t count the games Calgary played against the East, those “sad sack” Eastern teams would hold a 5-4 winning record against the remaining West teams….

  19. Check out Micah Johnson’s stat line. 2 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles. And he’s just one of many on that D. They were scary last year; might be even better this year.

    • Yes sir.
Charleston Hughes was expendable. Leading league in sack.
This defense is better than last.
Hughes, Richardson,Mayo, Klassen, Colling, Bell, Campbell……..all gone and we are better…. there is no stopping this horse

  20. RB Nation // July 13, 2018 at 12:31 am //

Felt bad for the RB defense who put in almost two games worth of time on the field. If there’s been a sorrier offense in the cfl I haven’t seen it. Calgary put Ottawa over it’s knee and gave them a spanking they won’t soon forget. You’d think they would have learned from the game in Calgary a few weeks ago and made a game out of it but it looked like they just felt really good about themselves beating up on Montreal and Sask.

  21. Stamps woulda put up 60 if BLM wasn’t pulled. RBs are a terrible football team. Trevor Harris is not a starting QB…..he’s an average backup at best. Combined with that terrible offensive line and you’ve got big trouble. Thought RBs might be competitive this year but they are in the same discussion as in Montreal, BC and Sask. most weeks they will be able to at least keep the score close and compete with those teams but they will get blown out by the rest of the league. While looking for a starting QB and a few offensive lineman who can block, the RBs May also want to look for a,head coach who displays a little emotion. Team plays like him…..blaaaa every game out. People wonder why we didn’t sell out tonight? Did you watch that embarrassing display? But hey, they got their paychecks!

  22. The Stamps have done close to the same thing for every team they’ve played so far. Shut them down, period. Give the Redblacks their 2-0 record against everyone else so far and maybe theyre not as bad as you think. Maybe Calgary is better than you think, though.

  23. Scottsask // July 13, 2018 at 1:24 am //

Calgary played great as usual, but the RedBlacks were just goddamned awful. The receivers could catch and the defense couldn’t stop anything.

    • Tiger man // July 13, 2018 at 7:37 am //

And Harris couldn’t help himself or his team either….

    • BigRedMachine // July 14, 2018 at 12:23 am //

It was one of those games where nothing goes right for them. Every team will have those. Don’t think you can judge a team on just one game. The Ottawa D actually played decent considering the number of turnovers.

  24. Backside shoulder // July 13, 2018 at 1:36 am //

18 games in a regular season. Odds are every team will lose at least 2 games. Going undefeated is nearly impossible. Plus add in a potential 2 games for the playoffs and it’s 20 games to win.

Any team can beat any team on any given day. If Mitchell is out for a lengthy period of time I see the stampeders behind Edmonton and Winnipeg in the standings.

  25. Can we finally stop pretending the RedBags are a legit Grey Cup contender and that Trev Harris is an MOP candidate?

Harris is a 32yr old QB who’s never won even a single playoff game in his life. WTF would anyone think Harris is going to have a “breakout” season at this age?

Especially with the completely useless Jamie “The Tennis Player” Elizondo as his OC.

As I explained numerous times in the preseason, the RedBags have BY FAR the worst OC in the league.

    Elizondo is absolutely clueless.

    • Philski // July 13, 2018 at 1:11 pm //

Sure, if we can finally stop pretending as well that Collaros is a “franchise” QB and able to regain his blip of a MOP performance in 2015…29 years old who’s won ONE total playoff game and is injury prone. WTF would anybody think Collaros is going to have a “break out” season at his age?

      • Collaros carried Hamilton to a Grey Cup. Trev Garris has never won a single playoff game in his life.

And if not for the horrible coaching by Shovelface Austin getting stage fright and settling for short FGs instead of going for the end zone, the woeful TiCats would have finally had their first championship of the millennium.

        • Philski // July 14, 2018 at 2:10 am //

“Carried”? Nope. TC D at that point was stout…matter of fact was on the verge of a CFL record for most points scored by a D. “Franchise” QB was just reaping in the profits. Still had 38 seconds to win the game after the Banks fiasco in the 2014 GC…instead he choked.

  26. Scottsask // July 13, 2018 at 1:49 am //

I think the some fans of the Riders would disagree. Our offensive game plan is atrocious, baffling and in most cases nonexistent, and I’m a die hard Rider fan.

  27. Tiger man // July 13, 2018 at 7:35 am //

And the two tones proved that the stamps didn’t even need Mitchell to start to beat Ottawa.

  28. I think any QB could lead the Stamps to victories. They are far and away the best TEAM in the league. Bo’s fine. They knew they didn’t need much to finish that game. CGY has MTL next. They could probably just rest BLM for that one, and give some snaps to the the depth chart.

  29. Stampeding // July 13, 2018 at 9:59 am //

Congratulations to Bo Levi Mitchell. Reaching 60 wins quicker than any QB in CFL history!
But he’s no good, just ask rider fans.

  30. So for the last three years I have watched every CFL game from start to finish. This year, however, I find myself going to bed by the end of the third quarter. Every game looks like high school football and if I wanted to see that I could just go down the street. This is just ridiculous and if the Stamps were so good, with the way Ottawa played, why didn’t they blow them out of the water? Boring!!

And why do you people have to get all over Brandon Bridges’ act of kindness? Why can’t you let it be just that, kindness!! And I’ll bet Brandon knows how to spell gesture

  31. Stamps are good but haven’t played a Western team yet…too early to annoint the Cup

    • Dieter
From what you’ve seen so far do you think the west is going to pose a problem for the might red and white?

      • 14 more games to go and lots can happen (injuries etc). I’m thinking Bombers and Esks could have something to say yet…possibly sask if they can muster any sort of offense……..first 6 games are preseason as far as I’m concerned

        • You are forgetting history.

          • History is just that…history.Teams dominate for a time and then it ends…inevitable.

          • You remember the 2001 Grey Cup?…that one stings me but I’m sure you were happy….like I say things happen

          • if you are talking history deadmonton and winnipeg have combined for 44+ grey cup appearances and 24 titles, calgary isnt even close, sure they have 8 grey cups but not nearly as dominant as those 2 historical teams. and probs never will be.

        • There is no reason to think Calgary won’t be just as good as they always are. In fact , there are early indications to think they might be better!

        • Yes Dieter
I do happily remember the 2001 Grey Cup. Anything can and does happen. But playoffs are a long ways away. All we have to worry about right now is playoff qualifying and playoff positioning. Right now everyone wants that 1st place spot. And there is every reason to think Calgary will once again get that in the west.

  32. Doug Mc Clintock // July 13, 2018 at 11:33 am //

Why is it that in football for the Grey Cup, there is only a single game ? In other sports they have a series best of 4 out of 7 like hockey and baseball. A 2 out of 3 would be a better way for the Grey Cup !

    • Stampeding // July 13, 2018 at 11:51 am //

They did play a best of 3 and 2 game total point series in the past for the division finals.
The Grey Cup being a single game, allows for a pre-determined location to be established and allows it to be a true event and spectacle. If they did a best of 3, it would be played in the participants cities, eliminating that possibility of making it the event it is today

    • MR. Green // July 13, 2018 at 3:04 pm //

No way. One game is the way it should be in football playoffs. That’s potentially 2 months of playoffs. Those other sports, it’s way different IMO. You could play 3 playoff games while another team sits for 3 weeks. You can’t shorten it to 4 playoff teams, stadiums would empty the last couple weeks.
One Grey Cup game in one city makes for a more exciting week.

  33. Down goes Bo. Let’s see how good this team is without him. Prediction: not very! But the D should hold them in games

  34. Keyser Söze // July 13, 2018 at 12:43 pm //

The Stumps are a good team. Have been a long time despite losing when it matters. However it is the fans (one in particular) that breed content for the whole team and organization. I doubt Bovine will be out long and he’s not the best part of that team, right now it is the defense.

  35. Hufnagel is 66..maybe good for a couple more years…after that it crumbles. Dave Dickhead is just a puppet.

  36. a lot of bragging here for a team that hasnt played one western division team yet, lol @ all games vs the east early will cost calgayray dearly later on 🙂 not worth bragging about a team that chokes in the final year after year, yet not even one good team they faced yet 🙂

    • Do you guys realize how your arguments run on a looped track?
We start the off-season, Calgary loses players and or coaches/managers, you predict Calgary’s fall………Calgary comes out winning……. then it turns to the quality of their opponents…….. Calgary plays the next best team in the league and blow them away…………then you move on to injuries………we get injuries……… we keep cruising

      • The more you spew, the more it becomes very evident that you’ve never played an organized sport in your life.

There is a saying – “Strive to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat” This is completely lost on you. No wonder even your own fan base is embarrassed to have you associated with their team.

Anyhoo…keep on keepin on. Soon it will be only you, and your multiple personalities left on here.

        • Did Duron Carter miss the day that lesson was taught?

          • And… you go down another road, as usual. It’s not about Duron, not about Chris Jones, it’s about your lack of class and sportsmanship. But again, as you’ve never been in a team environment- you wouldn’t know anything about that.

I’m going to let you go chase your tail, and drive this site into the ground. Enjoy your day.

      • and yet u choke year after year whats your point 😀

about half of the posts on this article are from stampy. Some posts are even comments on his own posts. This guy has a mental issue. I’m serious. He has real mental problems. I sure hope he is not employed and if he is, I would boycott anything to do with that company for hiring a phsyco. These are the type of people that go off the deep end and end up at schools or malls with guns. Seriously 3Down, end it with this guy for his owns sake.

    • problem is if they ban him he will just make another boring name like undefeatable mcmahon , ill stop there cuz ill give him more names.

There was never any doubt that Calgary would be in the Grey Cup again this year, just as there can be no doubt that they will lose once more. They just don’t have what it takes to win it when it really matters. So go ahead and enjoy your cup less 18-0 season, while once again; an eastern team or cross-over western team raises the cup for a third straight year.

    • i wouldnt guarentee the stamps being in the grey cup they havent even played a conference based team yet and are only 2 games up, especially if bo levis michelle is hurt for any legnth of time.

    • So the western final doesn’t matter?

      • Storm clouds move into McMahon // July 13, 2018 at 2:10 pm //

Not with the figurative horseshoes that the stamps have up their you know what. They always seem to win games they should have lost either by a lucky play or officiating error ect… Of course their luck seems to always run out in the Grey Cup!!

  39. dont get me wrong i like the stampeders for what they have accomplished in the past 20 some odd years kind of like a backasswards dynasty, but its certain fans that spew the same ol shyt that embarrasses the organization as a whole, heck i like calgary more than edmonton thats saying a lot, but gloating about victories is meaningless on here, say kudos to the other teams and move on dont put down every team you beat, especially when you cant win what matters the most. and what is funny is 3 down syndrome nation lets many handles stamps spew on and on, and if i make more than 2 points as irrelevant and stupid as they may be, they erase mine and keep all his garbage yap yap on, thats why this site is a joke.

  40. Hopefully Ambrosie has the courage to make Ottawa answer for that hit on Bo.

See you at the Tuscany Starbucks then?

      • Well done Blue. He has absolutely no idea what public interaction is, so he’s not going to respond to you.

      • Sure!
I know right where that is. It’s not far from my place. I’ve been to the Rexall, Mac’s and Last Straw Pub before.
Although I don’t live in Tuscany

        • Blue canoe // July 13, 2018 at 4:02 pm //

No show. Go figure. Just as I thought.

          • Stand by for excuse du jour.

          • What the F are you talking about.. I’ll meet you no problem

          • Blue canoe // July 13, 2018 at 4:23 pm //

Correct. No show it is. What a goof. Like his team he can’t finish.

          • So you wait exactly 2 hours from invite to now…..seems most would wait around. Stay there and I’ll be there in 10 minutes. Look for the black caddy….how will I know you?

          • Blue canoe // July 13, 2018 at 4:32 pm //

Waited for half an hour dirtbag. As we all thought, nothing but mouth. Pure loser.

          • Meet me at the pub…… 3:15

          • Blue canoe // July 13, 2018 at 4:37 pm //

Screw you shitbag. Proven troll. I lived up to my end. You didn’t. You are a zero. Everyone is right. Put this goof on ignore and carry on with CFL talk. I just proved you wrong.

          • you really didnt expect someone as classless, obnoxious and pathetic like Stampeding to actually keep his word did you? we knew that stampede wouldnt show, hes all mouth and no action, like every year when the grey cup goes elsewhere, stampede many handles becomes surprise, stamp is just a coward.

          • Blue canoe // July 13, 2018 at 6:26 pm //

You’re right Ryan. I expected the same results. The goof keeps spouting off so I took him up on it to prove he’s full of crap. And he is. I have the proof. Oh well. Time for him to limp on.

    • was a clean hit on bo stop whining

      • It was late, but I would not call it dirty.
However the league needs teams to understand harming the best players needs to be discouraged anyway they can

  41. Harris, “I’ll take the blame because it’s expected of me…” Apparently the new way to say it wasn’t my fault….

  42. BigRedMachine // July 14, 2018 at 12:39 am //

Sports has a way of humbling even the most dominate of teams. Stampeding would do well to not be such a trolling braggart. It’s not like you are out on the field and can back up your words…
