Bombers QB Matt Nichols taken off the six-game injured list

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols has been removed from the six-game injured list, an indication that he could be close to being healthy.

Nichols went down in practice with a knee injury on June 6 and head coach Mike O’Shea said he was expected to miss four-to-six weeks. Back up Chris Streveler has gone 1-2 with Nichols out of the line up.

The Bombers host the B.C. Lions on Saturday and held their first practice of the week on Tuesday but it was closed to the media (players on the six-game injured list cannot practice with the team.) By taking Nichols off the six-game early, the Bombers won’t see any salary cap savings from his stint on the injured list.

The 30-year-old is coming off his best season in the CFL throwing for 4,472 yards and 28 touchdowns.

  1. Encouraging news. Now he can practice, but no need to hurry his return with Streveler playing well.

    • Bo Levi Steveler // July 3, 2018 at 7:46 pm //

Agreed. Nichols should consider retirement. Streveler is the real deal.

Looks like the sliders are the only team without a proven quarterback…lol….oh wait….maybe a few more NFL castoffs will do the trick…lol…..

      • I’m a huge Bomber fan and 33 year season ticket holder. I have a strong dislike for the Riders. But please tell me why the f–k do you have to hijack this thread by,cutting them down? Your act is wearing so thin on here. Enough already, everyone gets it. You don’t like them. You had better hope Bo doesn’t get injured, because there isn’t much behind him.

Their “grasping at straws” scouting method doesn’t appear to be working, although the airlines are grateful for the business.

  2. RicoBeBlue&Gold // July 3, 2018 at 5:34 pm //

Agreed, no need to rush him back.

  3. Rider Fan // July 3, 2018 at 5:36 pm //

That is good news for the bombers

  4. Bombers looking good at QB now. Hope Streveler and Nichols stay healthy

  5. Home playoff game is back on the horizon!

No need to rush back as noted already. But when he does get back, I wonder if Streveler has ever considered playing DB?
Anyway, no loose for the Bombers: #1 back under center or a few more reps for Chris? It’s all good!

    • The kid certainly does have that kind of speed Paul. I like watching him take the ball when needed, but always worry that he might get crunched and be sidelined too. He’s a great find for your Bombers.

      • Doh….just saw the DB part hahaha….smart ass 🙂

:^) Smart-assery is a specialty. Ya… he’s a a bit of a bruiser, likes the smacks. Makes me nervous but he’s still young and rubbery.

Good news. He must be ready to practice. I wonder going forward when Nichols plays if they will still have Strevler come in the odd time besides short yardage. Anyway, Nichols makes the offence better. Strevler is not ready to lead them to a cup this season. Nichols keeps Masoli on the sidelines longer past week. Time of possession was a killer.

Good news for the Bombers butan what a find in Streveler. Good on Winnipeg. Looking forward to labour day, I suspect the Riders will have pulled their stuff together to make for a great game as always!

    • True Green // July 3, 2018 at 7:44 pm //

Typo: “but what a find on Streveler!”

    • Paul Bomber // July 3, 2018 at 7:53 pm //

Absolutely! Throw the records out the window for the labour day home’n’home!
I just hope Jones hasn’t given up on Bridge. Would be cool to see him and Streveler go head to head.

Streveler may not be such a great find since the other DC’s have some film on him.

    The surprise is over.

Right. That’s what happened to Rakeem Cato after his great start. But this guy is a beaut. I hope I live long enough to see how his career unfolds.

Good to see Nichols come off the IR and also to see him taking first-team reps this week. Streveler is a treat to watch, but as we saw in the last game, he is still a rookie, and game film is his enemy right now.

It will only benefit Streveler to develop under a seasoned professional for a season or two. I truly think that Steveler has the chops to be the next great quarterback in the league, but like other great QBs, there are dues to be paid and skills to be learned.
