QB Bryant Moniz among final Ticats cuts

The Ticats have (finally) made their final cuts.

Quarterback Bryant Moniz is a probably the most notable name, though his release is hardly a surprise after his terrible performance in the pre-season game on Saturday. Return man Willie Quinn showed some flashes last year but this team has a number of speedsters, including Frankie Williams who returned a punt for a TD in the first pre-season game. Canadian receiver Jacob Scarfone got some time with the first unit early in camp but his release almost guarantees they’ll start just one national receiver.

More thoughts and an updated depth chart shortly…

  1. vernon?

    • Probably still trying to work out a trade deal with another team. They probably don’t want to cut him outright if they can get a deal done.

    • Thought Rod Black blurted out that he was released yesterday, then immediately tried covering his tracks saying he wasn’t cut.

  2. Rod Black was probably distracted by Johnny “football” picking his nose for the first time on the 20 yard line in the cfl in Montreal with the wind at his back, baud I hate all the attention everyone is giving him and how reporters are dripping over everything he does ” for the first time ” I know it’s a story but there are a lot other there that are more talented and deserve the attention.

    • You have to wonder what the rest of the team thinks about all the hoopla & attention being given to JM. It probably gets more than annoying after awhile….

      • I don’t think most players and coaches pay much attention to the media, aside from direct interaction. And they’re smart enough to recognize overkill.

        There are exceptions though.

  3. Robert and Steven. Do your research. His teammates loved him in Cleveland and College station and Spring league. Google it. Former teammates are texting congratulations. The attention he gets is the high tide that raises all th e boats. Quit being so small minded. New Millennial and US based fans will increase revenue for all CFL teams. Dont you think his receivers and O lineman will get mire attention to. Jealousy invites treachery. C. Hynde..Pretenders from song Jealous Dogs 1982.

  4. more attention too

No surprise with Quinn showed nothing and last year played in one game got hurt in first half they need another return man Williams showed promise but I think Wilkerson will disappoint.A little surprised with Scarfone thought he showed some promise might get a look with someone else.I would love to see the Cats resign Brandon Stewart and take a page from the Argos and move him to SAM spot he plays physical can still cover receivers decent size. When he was here stated that he loved playing for the Cats and loved the Fans in Hamilton played with some swagger and a edge but publicly stated through social media he did not get along with Austin well that’s not a issue anymore could be a good veteran presence on the Defence and free up Unamba and Cooper for the secondary.

  6. As for that JM comment, I don’t think guys like Masoli or Vernon Adams are too happy when they bring in guys like Manziel who take all the attention and their value on the team. You might have a play where is was an insane catch, but every one is applauding Manziel, and not giving props to the receiver who caught the ball. That I can see happening. As for Masoli, it’s one thing having good depth, but having an egotistic guy like JM who is making him expendable and getting all the spectators to say start JM, I wouldn’t be happy nor would I perform the best when.

It’s not horrible having a two QB combination like Bridge and Glenn, or before Burris and Harris, but JM probably thinks this league is his one-way ticket back to the NFL, and I am not sure if he really appreciates it or is happy here. On the other hand you have other players who are glad to stick around whether an NFL opportunity opens or not, and appreciates the league, and doesn’t make an ass of it.

    • Maybe you should listen to some of Mamziel’s media scrums before you open your mouth to exchange feet. Your opinion is not based on anything I’ve heard.

  7. From what I watched of the game it appeared Moniz was scrimmaging from his own 10 yard line every time and then when Hamilton got the ball at Montreal’s 34 yard line they brought Manziel in. Field position can make a big difference in how a QB looks.
At the same time Manziel did look much better than Moniz.

    • Sea of Dead // June 10, 2018 at 7:01 pm //

Moniz simply stunk, stank and choked on every snap. Field position was not the major factor in his demise. I suggest that Moniz start looking for a career outside of football … like immediately!!!

R…I feel your post is agreed. I think Masoli has been slighted and perhaps incentive taken from him. Hopefully Masoli is now motivated more than ever to excell. I am thinking Manziel is next to his maximum achievements and will only be a minimum threat from here on forward. I believe JM is full of himself and maxed out mentally. Cats better hang on to Vernon and keep Masoli prepped and mentally ready. I am waiting to see how the Cats play against my superb Stamps!

Hope springs eternal,Anyone think the cats make a play for Bagg? The only thing for sure this season is that Rod Black will suck. Idea for a drinking game every time Rod says how long before we see Johnny you do a shot.

Should we agree on a nickname for our alien backup QB?, Why? J.M. is weak, Here let’s get it started

    1. Johnny Manziel
    2. Johnny Football
    3. Johnny We’re Sorry
    4. Johnny _____??
    5. JM
    6. JMan
    7. JMan2
    8. JManII
    9. ManzIIiel
    10. Manimal-ziel
(Yes i googled some of these !! LOL)

JMan2 is the name of his company, and his Ticat jersey is #2, so what do you Say to JMan2?

  11. JFF enough said.

    • Harryvan // June 10, 2018 at 7:02 pm //

JFF. So the middle ‘F’ is meant to be Friggin’? Freakin’? Fargin’? Is this considered profanity and inappropriate content, please don’t ban me Drew.

  12. We’ve been calling him that for years down here. You will eventually get it.

Wanting to whine about profanity or inappropriate content? He’s commonly referred to that name here in Texas and other parts.

It’s just JFF, get used to it as I feel he will be starting relatively soon.

  13. Harryvan // June 10, 2018 at 7:56 pm //

JFF had better get used to the Bench. The starting QB in the Hammer is Jeremiah Masoli.

Now another nickname just came to me… How about Johnny Manssiere or Johnny Bro (See Seinfeld episode The Doorman (1995))

Manziel played pretty solid in both preseason games anyway. Bryant Moniz, on the other hand, was simply attrocious!
Moniz has been with Calgary, Saskatchewan and Hamilton. Why??? Canadian quarterbacks rarely get an opportunity in the CFL, but there have been so many guys like Moniz that keep getting recycled.
I really hope that no GM for a team like Montreal or Ottawa says “Hey! I have an idea. I’m going to give Bryant Moniz a shot!!”
    No more Moniz… PLEASE!

  15. Moniz also played the Als starting D. By the time Manziel came in it was a mix of A and B. The Als D will be good as usual Kavis did a good job bringing guys in. Tommie Campbell, Mitchell White, Joe Burnett, Dom Ellis, Jamal Westerman, Henoc Muamba. Unfortunately still no QB though. Great receiving core and decent O line though.

  16. a first down may have saved Moniz. the bar was low. June had him at Hawaii

  17. Moniz has only himself to blame.. 1. Vanilla pre season defense. 2. He is a CFL VET. 3 .Played in Junes offence at Hawaii 4. Was in mini camp 5. Had playbook since February or so. 6. had first team O line for the most part. Stopped making excuses he sucked chunks.
