Alouettes mistakenly cut OL Xavier Fulton

The Montreal Alouettes can’t get out of their own way.

The Als sent out a list of cuts – put together by the team – and offensive lineman Xavier Fulton’s name was among them. Fulton played five games for Montreal last season, re-signed before free agency and appeared to be the starter at left tackle headed in 2018, so when his name was under the released category it was a surprise.

However, Montreal issued a correction that Fulton had indeed NOT been let go.

It appeared as if another team was ready to bring in Fulton quickly.

Just another day of dysfunction for the Alouettes.

  1. Right there with the Rough Riders drafting a dead guy. Classic CFL stuff.

    • Apparently Ottawa drafted a guy from Las Vegas Posse in the US dispersal draft who had been killed in a car accident and the next year Montreal drafted a player who had died from cancer.

That is some Major League stuff right there!
      “this guy here is dead!”
      “Cross him off then”

Before passing judgement on anyone in particular, I’m interested in knowing the technical process as to how these lists are made up. Surely the process must include a second set of eyes that reviews them. 10

  2. “And there was a team about to call Xavier Fulton’s agent, I’ve just been told”

???? So a team was about to call but didn’t…..so if they didn’t call, how do you know the team ? 🙂

    • Uh… because Herb’s info came from the team, not the agent.

    • I could see it being the Roughriders with it looking like they will be starting 2 rookie import offensive lineman including left tackle. Was it Jones or previous regime that didn’t keep Xavier a few years ago?

For next week’s season opener in Vancouver, hopefully the Als haven’t booked a flight to Winnipeg.

  4. Sounds like a 3 ring circus. Hopefully Kavis and company will realize there are actually 46 players on a active roster not 45.

  5. Scottsask // June 10, 2018 at 12:38 pm //

Either way it’s more than 12. Kavis gets confused after 12.

  6. classic Kavis.

  7. What a bunch of doe heads

  8. The Alouettes are becoming the “laughing stock” of the CFL. Kavis should have been one of the cuts; he likely will be after the 2018 season though so Alouette fans, be patient.

    • Good win the other night Lionsfan. Your team has had a lot of doubters, but I’ve always said – don’t count any team out in the CFL

      • Agreed, its beginning to look like Buono’s decision to hire Hervey is a BRILLIANT move. Ed may have rebuilt the Lions into a contender overnight with his focus on bringing in starters who are bigger and meaner on the O-line, and faster, bigger starters on the D-line. I agree with Hervey’s approach that football games are won or lost based on the play of the O-line and D-line. The only team that may be out of the playoffs before the Regular Season even begins in the 9 team CFL may be the Alouettes due to the incompetence of the current GM Kavis, who may now take the mantle as the worst GM in the CFL. To all Alouette fans (and Yup too); if YOU think Kavis is NOT the worst GM in the CFL today, name me another current GM who is WORSE, as I am interested in hearing your response? I actually feel empathy for all Alouette fans for the sorry state of the Alouette team this season.

        • You hit the nail on the head there, LF4L. Eska made a huge mistake letting Hervey go, in my opinion. It’s become apparent that Hervey’s management of the team hid a lot of serious flaws in his coaching staff.

BC found probably the best replacement for Buono that there could have been.

          • Hervey has already stated that if he is unable to get the job done within three years he will resign and Simon will take over as the GM. Hervey may get the job done in one season.

        • Ed Hervey is a very good GM who was hammered on by the Esks President, because the Edmonton media acted like spoiled brats. Hervey rebuilt the Esks culture that results in player loyalty and he will do the same of the Lions. It started with Torey Hunter moving from the Esks to the Lions and that has and will continue to pay dividends over the long haul for the Lions.

As much as I like Brock Sunderland and he was the only GM candidate that could hold a torch to Hervey; I still would have prefered to keep Hervey. Hervey and Hunter will have several “finds” and will deal their way into a contender before Chris Jones makes the Riders a contender.

        • I don’t think it was Buonhead’s decision to sign Hervey. Not usually the coach’s job to sign his boss…..

Yes, this is the same team and ownership who think that Drew Willy is a great quarterback, never mind that he couldn’t do the job for two other teams….

The Als ARE the laughing stock of the league…

  9. It’s hard to believe this season will be anything but disastrous for the Alouettes. Incredibly sad what’s happened to a once proud franchise.

  10. Al’s are going to get mauled in the Lions den next Saturday

    • Lets hope so…Kavis deserves a beat down for the incompetent manner in which he has (as Babs has said) disastrously ruined the Alouettes with his poor personnel decisions and lack of recruiting starters who can compete and play.

  11. Jose Perez // June 10, 2018 at 1:34 pm //

I heard Simon wants to be a GM ! Lol

    • I can see Simon (the Lion King) being the GM and Lulay being the Head Coach of the Lions both at the same time one day. Simon would almost certainly be a better GM then Kavis even with his current lack of GM experience, as the word is around the Lions organization that Simon has a real eye for recruiting talent.

      • I’m not convinced Kavis could organize a card game in a Casino honestly.

        • …or punch his way out of a wet paper bag (because he is that incompetent). It’s unfortunate that the poor Alouette franchise and their fans have to suffer as a result of Reed’s incompetence and poor decision making and recruiting.

  12. Just saying // June 10, 2018 at 1:54 pm //

Hopefully they didn’t book a flight to Winnipeg, I totally burst out laughing when I read that
And I don’t think it would be far fetched for that to happen.

  13. Lions and the Als are going to have the worst records in the league. The opener should be painful to watch for fans of either team.

    • Do you know anything about the Lions off season recuiting and signing of free agent vetrans who have extensive CFL playing experience. The Lions are only one of two teams that won both of their preseason games. The Lions defense played exceptionally well in the two preseason games getting lots of turnovers and scoring a lot of points off those turnovers. Jennings is healthy and played with an injured shoulder all last season after he returned from the four game injured list. A healthy Jennings and a better defense, and a better o-line should translate into MORE wins for the Lions this season compared to last.

      • I disagree Lions4Life. Can’t take the heat then get out the kitchen. Lions will miss the playoffs AGAIN and be dead last.

Send the gong show is missing only Chuck Barros… Reed and Gorell might rival Fateri and Dunnigan… Yes miles was part of that crap show too…

I honestly didn’t think it was a mistake. Sure he’s got a great story. Going from Defence to the hardest spot on the O Line. Covering a Right handed QBs blind side. However SK cut him and then brought him back later only out of necessity then cut him again. His play is not consistent. One game he’s rockin it and not allowing anyone near his QB. Then the next game the guy has 3 or 4 busts and gets his QBs bell rung a couple times.
So I’m surprised to hear this mistake in Fulton. I’m not at all surprised that Montreal made a mistake. This year was the 1st year in over 30 years of watching CFL that I witnessed a team getting a penalty for not coming out of their dressing room and being on the field of play after half time.

    • CFLFIRST // June 10, 2018 at 4:50 pm //

The Riders traded him. Xavier is a quality o-lineman. He struggled with injuries. If he’s healthy, the guy’s a beast.

  16. The Als are an easy target right now. But I suggest they did strengthen significantly in the off-season, and are now one QB short of a competitive team.

  17. RDS polled Als fan this weekend, out of 900 respondents, 90 percent of fans do not believe the Als will win as many games as last year (3).

  18. sth1988 // June 11, 2018 at 4:29 pm //

I don’t see the Als improving in any way. Willy is your starting QB. Not sure is the head coach was ever in Canada before he got hired and to top it off, Reed is the GM. This incident with any other team would get a pass, but with these guys it’s seen as typical Montreal. Love the city and going on road trips but the franchise has turned into a joke.

Many comments say Montreal needs a quarterback, but then doesn’t make any suggestions as to WHO that quarterback is.
Durant is washed up and retired. Drew Tate has taken a coaching job. Andrew Buckley retired. Josh Freeman didn’t work out at all. Colin Kaepernick still hasn’t realized that the NFL will never allow him back in their private country club. Tim Tebow is playing minor league baseball. Smilin Hank is with TSN.
Travis Lulay is injured again, and wouldn’t leave B.C.. All other viable starters were already dismissed by Montreal: Brandon Bridge, Kevin Glenn, Vernon Adams and Rakeem Cato.
It’s either Drew Willy, who’s more experienced, or young Matthew Shiltz. What other options are there?
