Bombers release Canadian receiver Matt Coates

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have parted ways with national receiver Matt Coates.

Coates signed as a free agent with the Bombers last year and made seven catches for 123 yards in 18 regular season games. Over his four-year CFL career, Coates has 16 receptions for 233 yards and one touchdown in 52 games.

If Coates gets healthy it’s conceivable Winnipeg could bring him back or another CFL would take a look at the reliable receiver.

  1. Too bad as Coates looked like a good receiver. Hopefully he can come back. A foot injury made promising Stamps receiver Johnny Forzani retire a few years back. Sometimes foot injuries are very hard to overcome.

    • 16 catches over four years?
Hardly promising, he’s in there just to fill a Canadian spot.
The ratio has to be reduced!!

      • Do you want me to start trolling your MLS sites like you and your sockpuppets do here? I have a lot more ammo because MLS sucks so bad.

        • This is what we get because of the Canadian ratio, Matt Coates a top draft pick 4 years ago – 16 catches in a career!
Giovanni Aprile a top pick for the Ticats a few years ago 2 catches.
Number 1 pick last season – Vandervoort – 1 catch
Behar another 1st rounder last season – zero catches.

My criticism is the lack of Canadian talent and the need to reduce the ratio.
Nice try to get off topic and start talking about soccer – I take it you don’t have much of an argument so that’s why you throw in the MLS comment? I don’t get it

          • Oh, you get it all right. No one comes to a site multiple times a day to disparage something they like. Doesn’t pass the common sense test. And there’s only two types of trolls who want to see the CFL dead. NFL wannabees and soccer trolls. MLS still sucks.

    • Hilarious. Forzani made it purely because of his last name.

Walters revenge. Put out the Trojan Horse. Riders got zip of National depth at receiver. Jones is preparing the paperwork.

      • Jeremiah was a bullfrog // May 17, 2018 at 9:55 am //

Not sure why you think that little boy pants. Canadian depth issues is not a receiver. If your going to make a comment. Check the rosters first. Hell the Riders have a
It’s starting quality of Canadian Olineman that’s an issue. Seriously people have your facts straight before you comment. Otherwise you sound stupid.
Hell the Riders just drafted a local young man they could put in that would out perform Coates in a heart beat. Picton is coming off a standout year at the U of R having been named a first-team All-Canadian and a Canada West all-star. He set a school record and led Canada West with 58 receptions and 834 receiving yards and led the country with 11 touchdowns.
So please people stop being so stupid. Especially Red, his comments are truly that of an over zealous fan. He posts comments out of his ass and pretends they are proven or he is going to prove them to be true.

  3. Jack in Regina // May 14, 2018 at 4:39 pm //

two weeks ago this guy was pencilled in as a starter. Now that he’s injured they cut him. This is exactly why Durant did what he did and should not be faulted for it.

    • Yes. Agree.

    • riderontheisland // May 14, 2018 at 5:32 pm //

      That does make sense Jack.

    • Mr Red. // May 14, 2018 at 6:03 pm //

So why is this move an indication of why Durant quit?

    • He was never a starter, destined to be a back up.

    • Yeah after the bombers folded he decided to keep the money. That’s exactly what happened.

The league needs to come up with an injury settlement policy for situations like this. The bombers no longer have a roster spot for him, unfortunately. Due to his injury, the bombers used three draft picks to select receivers and there simply won’t be a roster spot left for him. And since he was a borderline player in this league this is what happens. The players association needs to force the league to have more of a policy on this.

      • Lancaster/Reed // May 14, 2018 at 7:45 pm //

There is the 6 game injury list. Why not put him there? Is it the blue bombers dont want to pay him?

        • Bombs Away! // May 14, 2018 at 7:54 pm //

With a stable of NI receivers why exactly? Some teams do have that luxury you know.

    • bigboypants // May 14, 2018 at 7:20 pm //

Keep that in mind Jack. I see where Hurl is pencilled in as starter & Ojo backing up Johnson to name. Things change. Big deal.

  4. Less than TWO (2) weeks ago, the resident shill for Winnipeg was proclaiming how Matt Coates was a starting calibre WR and pumping his tires incessantly.

Here’s what my assessment of Coates was:

“You can’t be serious about Matt Coates. Four years in the CFL and Coates has a grand total of ONE (1) touchdown and an embarrassing 233 yards receiving. For his ENTIRE four year career.”

Looks like Area51 was spot on once again.

    • Hey Kreskin, I don’t see anything in your trolling about recovering from a broken foot. Couldn’t predict that one?

      • Just call it as I see it, my friend.

Coates is terrible. If he was anything more than a no-talent scrub, the Bombers would have kept him around on the IR – – kinda like Regina did with Chad Owens last year, remember?

Looks Ky Walters screwed up another off season FA signing. Not only is Coates a useless WR, he’s also damaged goods.

Walters just getting humiliated this week.

        • You mean troll it, you ever had a good word? I see the Canadian guys were fairly impressive to the Americans at the Giants camp. You would think that would impress a wannabe like you. Do you have small feet, is that the reason behind the trolling?

        • Garney26 // May 14, 2018 at 7:09 pm //

so area51 what team are you starting for? Couch potato predictionist isn’t a position! Love how you guys who probably have never done anything athletic in your lives come on here preaching how good or bad a player is. If he made it to the professional level then he’s good. Not all Canadian receivers get the throws many of them work had in the areas you don’t see like protection, opening up routes for other players or special teams. How about some of you think and then don’t comment at all. God I hope Drew shuts this shit down as most of you are too stupid for words or more concerned about spelling and grammar mistakes. SMFH!

          • CFL lover // May 14, 2018 at 7:36 pm //

Good on you Garney 26, man there are some small minded losers on this site. Thank you for pointing that out. Imagine hiding behind an anonymous handle and taking cheap shots at guys who are ten times what they’d ever hope to be.

Couch potato predictionist – love it !!

          • True green // May 15, 2018 at 1:21 am //

Actually Area51 is generally very accurate in their assessments… I’ve taken issue a few times with how they state their assessment, and they could be more understanding of personally issues (like addictions) and less aggressive in comments BUT, and I hate to admit it after referring to them as the C word a while back, they’re pretty accurate in analytical abilities.

            Sometimes the truth hurts.

    • He was right and every team has a couple of Matt Coates. Good CIS stats but it’s a different story when you get into the CFL.

    • Bombs Away! // May 14, 2018 at 7:31 pm //

How hard is it to be spot on when a guy breaks his foot? And… I was spot on when I predicted Durrant would never play a down this year.

      • Why did the resident Bomber shill not make mention of Coates having a broken stump in that pre draft article? The guy proclaimed Coates would be a starting WR in Winnipeg this year.

Coates is on par with Jade Etienne and Jordan Sisco in terms of useless NI receivers.

  5. And out come the rider trolls.

    • bigboypants // May 14, 2018 at 7:25 pm //

Thanks for the prediction Captain Obvious? How many times have we heard that before. Another item NOT about the Riders but here you are.

Show me one comment made by a rider fan that is troll like . Ya thought not crawl back into your hole

  6. Wideout // May 14, 2018 at 8:47 pm //

The guy is Ricky Foleys brother, an Argo fan to the core, and a Jones hater. “Anne drew” and “big boy pants but small man cup” just got owned as they refer to this guy as Rider fan. Better stay quiet and anticipate number 29 than speak up and prove to all your lack of, …,well, a lot of things.

    • Ricky Foley, wasn’t that the guy who thought he was black, like J-Roc on TPB?

      • No, you are thinking of Alexis Singleton

      • MJ Bandit // May 14, 2018 at 11:18 pm //

He’s the guy who looked like a useless scrub in his “comeback” attempt with BC last year = hence why his relative is on an even more greater mission to proclaim every and all Canadian players as useless no talents who can’t measure
up to this guy’s hero. All you responding to this clown/troll here are just giving the moron a reason to “call it as he sees it” – a pathetic excuse to post hater drivel to pump his hero/relative in his eyes. It’s really sad & pathetic, but carry on “discussing” football with this dullard. And he’s no Argo fan in the slightest and has zero real clue about the CFL – he’s an all-american hero worshipping wannabe with an agenda to post hater garbage. Have fun with it though. ;o)

      • True green // May 15, 2018 at 1:25 am //

What’s your beef with Ricky Foley? He played like a beast in Sask

        • MJ Bandit // May 15, 2018 at 9:35 pm //

WTF does that have to do with this discussion and this moron’s obvious agenda to bash any and all Canadian football talent ???

Are you as freakin’ clueless as he is ?

  7. Now that your long winded and incoherent rambling is mercifully over, let’s get back to the topic at hand.

As I explained two weeks ago, Matt Coates was a nonsensical signing for the Bombers. Anyone expecting him to be a starter at WR was living in a dream world.

Never understood why people try so desperately to deny reality, but despite some attempting to pretend otherwise, the guy’s just not a pro level receiver.

  8. Anyone concerned about the lack of Canadian receivers?
    What has happened?
Here is a list team by team of Canadians receivers that caught passes last year:

    Jimmy Ralph – 26 receptions – 278 yards
    Malcom williams 14 receptions 153
Brian Jones – 12 receptions 2016 zero last season
    Put on special teams
    Noel Levi – 1 reception in 2017

Aprile 3 receptions over 4 years
    Chambers 32 receptions in
    Faubert-Lussier 3 receptions

    Sinopoli 91 receptions 1009 yards
    Feoli-Guidino 45 receptions 462 yards

    George Johnson 13 receptions
    Demski – 19 receptions 222 yards

    Rob Bagg – 35 receptions 335 yards
    Jake Harty – 27 receptions 225 yards

    Calgary Stampeders

Julan Lynch 2 receptions 18 yards
Anthony Parker 36 receptions 482 yards

    BC Lions

    Shaq Johnson – 30 521 yards
    Cory Watson – 27 350 yards
Danny Vandervoot 1 reception 25 yards

    Zero catches by Canadians

On the off chance anyone is interested in facts, rather than just insulting each other over previous posts….

Coates was signed by the Bombers primarily because Dressler was hurt, and we needed a good option for a HOLDER (Coates had held for Medlock in Hammy). The fact that he was a functional back up Nat receiver was fine. No one here ever thought he was a star, but the signing made a LOT of sense. Starting this year was technically possible, with the plan being for 2 starting Receivers, but back up was more likely, with Demski and Wolitarsky on the inside track for the starting jobs.

If you don’t pay attention to the Bombers regularly, I don’t why you’d think checking in with National Media occasionally makes you an expert on them. I admit to knowing nothing about depth players on any other squad in the league (unless they were here recently)

    • You make some good points.
The CFL doesn’t have many good Canadian receivers and Coates can come in and be useful as a backup or holder or special team guy.
Like I posted above – very few Canadian receiver out there and only TWO that caught more than 40 passes last year – Sinopoli and Fulio-Guidino.
Brad Sinopoli is by far the best Canadian receiver in the league – 91 receptions and he missed 3 games.
The closest Canadian is Fulio-Guidono with 45 catches
