Lions sign former Eskimos, Redblacks RB Travon Van

The B.C. Lions have signed running back Travon Van for the 2018 season.

“Travon is a dynamic offensive weapon who also brings significant special teams potential to our club,” said GM Ed Hervey in a statement. “As Wally [Buono] and I have stated previously, every position on the field is going to be a competition in training camp and I expect Travon to be extremely motivated with this opportunity.”

Van played six games for Edmonton last season, where he recorded 71 carries for 283 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught 17 passes for 69 yards and one touchdown, returned seven punts for 83 yards and six kickoffs for 148 yards.

Through his CFL career, Van has tallied 705 yards and three touchdowns on 152 carries, 180 yards and one touchdown on 37 receptions, 83 return yards on seven punts, and 148 return yards on six kickoffs.

This one surprises me. Already have pretty good competition at RB I thought.

It was a small sample size last year when the elks had all of the injuries but they had one RB, Ladarius Perkins. He really impressed me.

  3. Van is very good and is a solid starter in the CFL

  4. Van is a good depth pickup at running back as he can also return kickoffs and punts.

  5. Van a solid RB and one that can start, but the Esks just can’t keep them all and Gable is going to lead the pack of RB’s into camp.

Suspect the Esks are hanging on to White to keep him from the Lions, Stamps and Riders. If at all possible the Esks may be able to place White on the 1-game as he still rehabs from last season and delay his jump to another Western team.

LaDarius Perkins is another back that CFL teams maybe interested in and could get pushed out by speed back and punt returner Shaq Cooper.

Teams like Calgary seem to be sitting in the weeds with a single international RB that will start and no backups on their roster announced for camp. Expect one of Perkins and White to be picked up by the Stamps once released by the Esks.

Hopefully Brock Sunderland can deal Perkins east to a team like the Ti-Cats for next to nothing just to get them out of the division.
