CFL mini-camps set to get underway

With mini-camps set to get underway, teams around the league are preparing to hit the field for the first time in 2018.

The Alouettes kick off the slate in Vero Beach, Florida April 16-18, close to 30 players are expected mainly from the offensive side of the ball including quarterback Josh Freeman. The Redblacks will be in the familiar confines of TD Place. Same with the Ticats at Tim Hortons Field. The Argos are back at IMG Academy in Florida with all players on the roster attending.

The Bombers are staying in Winnipeg with every quarterback and a mix of first-year players and veterans planning to be there. The Riders will have around 40 veteran players at their mini-camp including each quarterback and the rest will be first-time CFL players. For the first time in team history, the Eskimos will have current roster players at mini-camp. The Stampeders are at IMG Academy in Florida with mostly CFL newcomers but also new players to the team making the trip. While the Lions are in B.C.

  1. Argos, Riders, Stamps all in Bradenton I’m in the Sarasota area so I may go to all three camps.
Cool today but the heat will be back tomorrow for the rest of the week and all sun.

  2. I wonder if the Bombers will be able to get out on the field in Winnipeg? It’s only April.
Could be bad in Hamilton and Ottawa too.

      We’re good!
Unless it’s in the shade, most of the snow is gone already… I’m sure IGF is already good to go excepts in the shady corners. Double-digits by Friday and all weekend too. (I’ve seen it worse than this in October and for sure in November).

    • @Jeff Long range forecast for Ottawa is double digit highs. The stadium is field turf so that will be fine. It will be like late September, early October weather. It will be fine.

What I would like to know if how they have the operating budgets to bring their camps to Florida and Las Vegas, but they don’t have enough to pay some players more than $55,000.

      • The players $ has to fit the salary cap, the camps are outside the cap.

      • Most of the players are from the US, so it’s not like they are bringing 40 or 50 players from a Canadian CFL city.
I would think it’s just as cheap or cheaper than flying them in from all over the US to a Canadian city and putting them up in hotels.

  3. Obviously Calgary is being mimicked by the riders. Nothing new with that, I’ve been witnessing for 30 plus years

Hate to split hairs, but Riders are in Bradenton on the 24th of April. Calgary doesn’t get there until 28th. Seems Calgary is following the Riders, are they not?

      • Calgary picked their dates and the riders picked after

do you even read back the crap you spew?

now how do feel about a new stadium in Halifax ?

        type 1 for yes
type 2 for a free coffee;)

        • I’m all for a stadium and CFL team in Halifax, but that stadium must be built in a responsible way providing least cost to the citizens while providing the most public good.

Oh ya you nailed it the sun revolves around the stamps . The riders try and emulate the mighty stamps . For instance our stadium , oh wait . Guess I was wrong

      • Look at all the players, coaches and themes the riders have taken from Calgary.
The riders have a very short mini camp compared to other teams. This may very well mean off season recruiting has once again beared little fruit.

      • The new stadium is old news

does this make you sad or make you want to follow another team in Nova scotia perhaps?

      type 1 for yes
type 2 for at any cost
type 3 for a free timmys

    • It’s been terrible out east. Calgary is a mess this morning too.

    • It’ll be better next week Jeff. Definitely warmer and probably drier. At least they didn’t get close to a foot of snow like we did in Central Ontario!

  9. We will see if the Alouettes can move the ball when there is no defence.

Love these mini camps just means football is around the corner . There is always a few players to get excited about .

  11. Riders been going to Florida way longer than the Stumps – bubble burst.

So mr red has multiple names so he has someone that will agree with him . But he is so goofy he will probably argue with himself .

  14. I would be curious as to how much the mini camps in Florida or Vegas cost, including facility rental, flights, etc?

    • Depends, As many player aren’t under contracts, I think flights and accommodation may be the players responsibility to arange

      • Of course the team is paying for travel and accommodations. This is a mini camp. Fans that can read and remember know this.

        • lolol Have a nice night Mr Green.
I’ll let you have these little victories, that’s all rider fans have 🙂

    • Probably as much as the mini-camps in Canada.
The players will be flown in or drive to the Florida mini-camps, since most of the players are from the US it’s not a big deal.
I would think that it would cost more to fly them to Canada for the mini-camps, whether the camp is in Canada or Florida the players would still have to be accommodated in hotels.

  15. Okay. I thought these mini camps were for signed players, not necessarily talent finding camps.

    • Last year the Riders signed Vince Young, he looked good enough at the mini-camp to be invited to the main camp.

I would say that the stamps only get the little victories also And never the big ones wink wink nudge nudge
