Lions sign former Eskimos and Ticats DB Marcell Young

The Lions have signed defensive back Marcell Young.

Young was released at the end of March by the Eskimos.

He had inked a contract extension through the 2019 season in February 2017 with Edmonton but played just seven games in 2017 missing 11 due to injury.

Young moved from Hamilton to Edmonton while Ed Hervey then-Eskimos turned Lions general manager signed him as a free agent in February 2013. The 30-year-old played five seasons with the Eskimos making 199 tackles and three interceptions in 74 games. He was on the Eskimos 2015 Grey Cup championship team.

Young began his CFL career in Hamilton where he played for two seasons recording 63 tackles and three interceptions in 23 games.

  1. Not enough teams, players are recycled.

    • More often players are recycled due to the SMS along with younger players playing for less money.

    Recycled or is retread.

A good steady Defensive back. Doesn’t make a lot of the attention grabbing interceptions but is a good cover guy. He could help Lions and make this a good signing. We had him in Hamilton when he first came to the CFL. Unfortunately for Marcell the DC at the time was Casey Creehan – who may have been the worse DC ever to pass through the league.

Hasn’t played well the past 2 seasons. Not sure why Hervey signed him to a 3 year deal before he left. The Eskimo caravan continues to head for western beaches. Add Marcel Young to A J Jefferson, Gary Peters & Cauchy Muamba (also Dubuisson via Regina). I can see them for depth but as starters, not so sure. They weren’t starting in Edmonton last year. But they will help especially with losing Yell. Purifoy, Gaiter & Fenner. They ARE veterans.

    • An eskimo fan, co-worker of mine felt it was no great loss when he was released from the eskimos. When you listen to a game on the radio in the car and you hear a DB’ name mentioned a lot, it is usually not a good thing.

I do think the Lions will be better this year, BC Dave, & hopefully in the conversation for a playoff spot. I like Jennings. Hard to say how much the OL will be improved but Figueroa is a BIG addition. If he can keep Jennings clean the offence will be greatly improved. Figueroa only allowed 1 sack all year. That’s a young guy the Esks wanted to keep.

        • I am quite comfortable with the pieces we have on Offence GreenEnvy. My concern is our secondary. Missing big names like Yell, Fenner, Purifoy.

  5. See this ALL the time in all the pro sport leagues when a coach or GM changes teams. They grab one of their FORMER players for various reasons. Hopefully the main one being that they think it will help their NEW TEAM win more games in the upcoming season and improve that position on the club.

Wow, I think Hervey’s going a little overboard bringing over all these Ex-Eskimos.
Odell Willis, Joel Figueroa, Cory Watson, Otha Foster, Cauchy Muamba, Chris Greaves, Gary Peters, Mike Dubuisson and now Marcel Young.
    Am I missing anybody?
Yeah… Euclid Cummings. An excellent example of a player NOT to sign!0

    • I am Ok with all of those except the DB’s. Other than Otha Foster, not sure any of the others make us better.

  8. Don’t matter no one goes to the Loins games anyhow

  9. Good DBs are extremely hard to find. Rebuilding a secondary takes more than 2 seasons. Just look how long its taken the Bombers to finally get a good one
