Columnist makes inevitable ‘Roider Pride’ joke

Regina Leader-Post columnist Rob Vanstone has found a little humour in the positive drug tests of two Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Both running back Marcus Thigpen and offensive lineman Bruce Campbell have been flagged for performance-enhancing drugs in the last two months. Campbell’s two-game suspension was announced in January, Thigpen’s on Monday.

While Vanstone’s jab is pretty innocuous, there will likely be some smart alecks inclined to point out the Riders’ history of fines under Chris Jones… or that there’s a 33 per cent chance that Thigpen’s positive drug test happened during last year’s playoffs.

Surely the good fans of Roiderville will take Vanstone’s humour in the spirit intended.

    • Chris have you been following? Or just proving that twist always post first.
Several teams players this off season have been pointed out. Even your beloved Speedy B loves the Steroid that gives him speed.
In the future try harder not to be such a humungous Dork

      • Hey 3rd and 1 know your drug of choice before you lump other teams players into the same pile. Speedy to MDMA a party drug and he did it when he was out at a party. Yes Methylenedioxyamphetamine is a banned substance but it’s not really a performance enhancing and it’s definitely not steroids. In case you didn’t know what steroids do, they are used to increase their muscle mass and strength. That will effect there performance on the field.

        • Lol! Now there’s some creative spin. Campbell and Thigpen probably just took some supplement they shouldn’t have taken, but Banks’ drug makes him an actual spaced out, punk-ass, druggie!

“Creative spin,” he says while deliberately ignoring the difference between a banned controlled substance with a short-term performance enhancing effect and a banned controlled substance with a long-term performance enhancing effect.

We all know i marijuana is going to be legal very soon or at least that clown that runs this great country says it is. What i want to know is what is the C.F.L going to do to stop this nothing i think if its good enough for the clown that runs this country its got to be good with the CFL trouble is we have to stop any players from going to India putting on a ceremonial dress and acting like a complete IDIOT if THE CFL can do this get on with the season have any coaches ever been tested after all they are the great leaders of the teams in this great league.

Walter, try writing this later when you’re not stoned, I read it 3 times and I’m still confused.

  5. I’m pretty sure he thinks steroids and marijuana are the same thing…

  6. Just because you understood it doesn’t imply that there was any intrinsic value in what was stated therein, it’s worth noting…

League wide conspiracy to make the Riders look bad!!! All CFL teams are involved- so obvious and sad- you’re just scared of the Riders!!! Riders rule- all other teams suck!!!!

Hmmmmm…. league wide, all teams involved, would that not include Riders??

Strip Jones of all his draft picks this year. The roidriders clearly aren’t learning their lessons

    • Just to state the obvious, this is a player’s responsibility, and both Campbell and Thigpen are 30 and have played on a lot of teams, including 4 year stints each in the NFL, so they know the drill. They just screwed up, and they’re going to take a big hit in the wallet because of it.

    • lol strip Jones of picks.. My god you a special kind of dumb.

Do the riders employ Russian “trainers”

  12. Except for Walter, the rest of you did very well with your posts. We do need to clean up this drug issue around the leaguel

Lastly if Rob Vanstone could remove himself from calling into a certain radio stations show. One where that station who is not affiliated with the Riders attempt a call in Rider talk show. So if your on the road listening to them because you don’t know any better. When the game starts they try to keep you on thier station with zero football talk. Because they have all left to either go and watch the game. Or listen to the game being called on arises Radio. Then when the game is over they come back hoping your still there to call in and discuss the game you didn’t hear.
Vanstone is by himself and helps these over the hill DJs. Rob could do much better just staying away and on his own.

I agree…these so-called columnists and radio “personalities’ should be put out to pasture. That lame joke aside, Vanstone should be thankful anyone actually reads the drivel he writes. On the other hand, how pathetic is it that 3DN posts a story about another storyteller? So now the reporters are making news and reporting on each other?

    • Bleeding Green // March 13, 2018 at 10:59 pm // Reply

Rob is good man. I appreciate him because he isn’t over-biased. When the Riders suck, he calls them out. When Jones is inevitably a tool, he calls him out. He also calls himself out over the years for liking Burris too much. Lol. Ive appreciated his Rider coverage over the years.

Rider fan were discussing a new song for their player intros.
I suggest Paul Engermann’s “Welcome to the limit” from the movie Scarface.

Not cheesy enough. They should play Taylor Swift don’t you think? How about “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” when a dumped Rider comes back to haunt them. Would have gone perfect with Durant dancing with the Football Gods last year. A nice touch when Lemon sacked the Riders 3 times in the Eastern Final. How about Weston’s 135 yard game in the ’16 Banjo Bowl? On the other hand, considering all the lack of success, maybe “Achy Breaky Heart” should be the theme song.

      • Achy breaky heart.. Thats a good one for BO eh? Two major chokes in two years, both being in the grey cup. His heart should be broken 😉

True but you do know the Riders lost 2 in a row to the Als in 2009 & 2010 when the GC was played in McMahon & Commonwealth? One was by a self-inflicted wound after a missed FG, giving the Als a 2nd try to make it right. What would you call that if not a choke?

  16. Blackhawk89 // March 12, 2018 at 5:33 pm // Reply

Maybe the riders should replace the wheat sheafs in their logo with syringes

  17. Vanstone must be looking for a cheap way get his lawn fertilized. 😉

There’s a Vanstoned joke to be made here too, in retort. (not that I have any idea whether he partakes)

  18. All of you crying “cheaters!” get with the times. This isn’t your great grandfathers era of fair play and sportsmanship. Lie, cheat, spy, juice to try to win.

If your view holds, I will no longer be a sports fan. While we’re at it, why not script the games and make it like WWE? No thanks, I prefer the cheaters being found and punished. Sports should demonstrate some kind of competitive integrity: it makes for great theatre.

  19. This reminds me, whatever happened to Stampeder DB Tommie Cambpell’s charges of DEALING drugs?

“Campbell attempted to flee by jumping over a fence in the backyard while carrying a backpack.

He apparently dropped the backpack, and police said it contained individually wrapped bags of crack cocaine and bundles of cash. A search of the home revealed more cocaine, in addition to scales and other drug paraphernalia, police said.

Campbell was eventually arrested Tuesday afternoon. According to the Times, he faces 21 counts each of possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver, plus 10 counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, one count of flight to avoid apprehension and one of tampering with evidence. All of the charges are felonies.”

    • Rocky Mountain High // March 12, 2018 at 6:44 pm // Reply

None of that happened. Charges were dropped. Campbell doesn’t even play for Calgary anymore anyways.

      • Lol! Just because the charges were dropped doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Did you know that the house he was running from, where all the drugs were found, was his mother’s house? lol. And the backpack was a Stampeders backpack? You’d have to be pretty naive to think that he wasn’t involved, or totally desperate, which would be your category.

We don’t know why the charges were dropped. Maybe he turned on his mother! lol!

        • Rocky Mountain High // March 13, 2018 at 4:37 pm // Reply

And just because some deny Carter got into a fight at practice doesn’t mean it didn’t happen either!

        • George Porge // March 13, 2018 at 6:25 pm // Reply

Let’s see. According to you, there was a search warrant. It was his mother’s house. He ran from the cops. While running from the cops he dropped a backpack with the logo of the team that employs him and that backpack contained a large amount of crack cocaine.

And in light of all that hard evidence, backed by a legal search warrant, the charges were dropped by the DA.

Do you *really* not understand the gravity of that last sentence, RFD? Like, are you *really* that stupid?

  20. Bombs away // March 13, 2018 at 1:30 am // Reply

When you have a coach that has no morals it trickles down to the players. Most coaches enforce a code of conduct but when he’s loosy goosy you get this.

    • greenenvy? // March 13, 2018 at 1:44 am // Reply

Vanstone had it wrong saying the “S” should stand for “suspended”. “Stupid” is a better word. Maybe all players should be handed “I’m With Stupid” t- shirts to wear.
