Drake Night brings Toronto teams together, including Grey Cup champion Argos

The Argonauts were part of Drake Night at the Raptors game on Friday as each franchise in the city was brought together.

The Raps put Drake-inspired t-shirts on every seat and in the Air Canada Centre.

There was a current or former player on hand from each pro sports team in Toronto.

Freshly extended running back James Wilder Jr., all-star receiver S.J. Green and pass rusher Shawn Lemon represented the Double Blue.

Drake has really embraced the Argos since watching their Grey Cup victory and the Canadian music star made sure to be there on Dec. 1 to pose with Lord Earl Grey’s mug and members of the team.

God’s Plan needs to bring Drake to BMO Field for an Argos game in 2018.

  1. For young people Drake is cool and the Raps are cool.
The Argos need Drake or someone like him to attract young fans to Argo games.

Well they need all the help they can get filling seats. If Drake is involved that would likely be a positive, both for the team and the league.3

    • The Raptors usually do OK filling the seats, although there are reports that they paper the house a bit. Their problem is the TV ratings. They’re not as bad as TFC but I’m noticing that most of their games are back on the second tier sports channels, which is not a good sign considering they’re having a fairly good year. Ratings for the Raptors and Jays usually spike way up when they’re having contending seasons, but this year the Raptors are doing well but nobody seems to be watching or talking about them, so this might be an attempt to draw in some of the Argos much bigger fan base during the off season.

The issue with the Raptors is they get almost ZERO coverage in the US. They are in 1st place in the East and just beat the Rockets (1st place in the West) and very little news coverage outside of Canada. They get ZERO respect from sports media outside of Canada

  3. Good to see Wilder can now afford to buy gold chains and a designer watch. I was so worried about him because his last contract couldn’t feed his babies or provide shelter for them.

      THAT is an awesome comment.
      Well spotted.

    • Yep, he normally works a 10-hr shift at his construction job Friday’s and Sat, so he was lucky to get away for the concert.

You think that because he’s black he must work construction? he’s not smart enough to do anything else? seriously man, he a smart business man.
He was smart enough to challenge the Argos on their minimum wage contract and forced their hand.
You might want to check on his success at his clothing line business in Tampa and with his motivational speaking program in our community.

        • TreyvonB – The following is a direct quote from Wilder himself from a 3down piece January 24,2018 –

“I’m currently working construction in Dallas six days a week, 10 hours a day, 60 hour weeks. I have the pay stubs to prove it. The construction job is just to put money in my pocket right now”

          • Just part of the negotiation. Now he’s doubled his salary, so it worked. In most leagues when a rookie on a minimum contract has a star type year the team will reward him with a new contract. Off the top of my head I think the same happened with Cam Wake in the NFL.

Hahahah that’s good stuff right there breeze

I don’t want to criticize Drake because he says he likes the CFL and wants to help the downtrodden Argos. But how come every time musicians from Canada hit it really big, they always suck??? Justin Bieber, Nickelback and now, Drake being key
examples. Hey… I didn’t PROMISE not to criticize him.

    • greenenvy? // March 10, 2018 at 11:22 am //

Nickelback was good before they made it big??? Don’t give up hope, I hear Dan Hill is making a comeback. His duet “45” with Anne Murray is out in July.

      • Haha – well done envy.

      • Yea Dan Hill and Anne Murray would satisfy the current Argo season ticket holders and maybe get back the thousands that were season ticket holders at the Rogers Centre!!

    • You seem like the kind of guy who’d appreciate Neil Diamond….he was unavailable. Those downtrodden Argos also go by the catchy tag…..Champs!

The power of MLSE. Jays, Raptors show up @ Toronto FC games. You have to make the venues a place to be seen. With MLSE on board you’re going to see this happening with the Argos. The Raptors not too far back were not that cool. Winning helps but for the younger fans Drake is big. The Argos have a good chance to be relevant again.

    • Nice try by MLSE but I don’t think they will ever be relevant again.
Toronto sports fans see the Argos in the same light as the AHL Marlies – Not the big league.
Football would be relevant again in Toronto if they had an NFL team.

  6. greenenvy? // March 10, 2018 at 11:13 am //

BTW, nothing to do with “God’s plan”. Why do actors tour to promote bad movies even THEY don’t like – contractual obligation. Why do singers/actors go to rich guys’ birthday parties? Appearance fees. Lucrative little gigs. MLSE can make these things happen. Don’t underestimate what having tnat kind of marketing power & money behind you can do if they put their minds to it.

  7. Edward Leslie // March 10, 2018 at 12:54 pm //

greenenvy, if they want to register on the cool scale, how come you and I haven’t been invited???
Is Huey Lewis & The News still cool? I bet they’d attend AND do a reasonable version of “O Canada” too. Hopefully WITHOUT the revised Politically correct/ Justin Trudeau approved lyric change! LOL

    • greenenvy? // March 10, 2018 at 1:17 pm //

Beats me. I wore my KimK t-shirt to the game & Drake had me ejected. Didn’t get me into the Taylor Swift concert either. Go figure.

  8. I can’t wait to see an opposing player turn around and “clock” Drake when he is chirping them. Who the hell does he think he is and how the hell did he get to be on the bench (or close to it) in the first place?

  9. Nice touch to recognize TO’s pro sports team witb tbe shirt giveaway…but I’m extremely disappointed the the Toronto Rock pro lacrosse team was neglected. Lacrosse is Canada’s national sport, and The Rock have won more championships than Toronto FC, The Blue Jays and The Raptors. Toronto Rock’s personnel are progessional athletes, and the sport is fantastic. Next giveaway, I hope they gwt it right.

  10. Are you a current season ticket holder? i am. Curious, I see a wide selection of ages at Argo games. Guess you get a better few watching for a few minutes from your couch.

  11. Hey TrevonB why don’t you take a hike
Why does everything have to turn into racist always why don’t you find out the correct info before you spout off and complain about everything. I don’t know or care what race or color you are it does not matter but please take that crap somewhere else.
