Elite cover man Tommie Campbell signs with Alouettes: report

Defensive back Tommie Campbell moving to Montreal, according to Danny Austin of Postmedia.

The standout former Stampeders cover man did not allow a touchdown during the entire 2017 regular season, yet he was left off the CFL all-star team. He was part of a secondary that was the toughest to pass against league-wide in 2017.

Campbell has played in 35 games for the Stamps providing lockdown coverage at the boundary corner spot. He has 108 tackles and five interceptions over two seasons in Calgary.

Originally drafted by Tennessee in 2011, seventh round, 251st overall, Campbell made 37 tackles, recovered one fumble and forced another and he has a 65-yard punt return touchdown to his credit.

The 30-year-old’s combination of size – six-foot-three, 203 pounds – and speed (4.31-second 40-yard dash) coming out of California University of Pennsylvania are rare.

  1. Well, so much for the “un-named source” that said no free agents wanted to go to Montreal.

  2. Good signing,following DC Carter.

This was the one FA that I was still dreaming about coming to Saskatchewan.

What a great pick up. All star caliber. Another piece. Slowly coming together. Wasn’t it Mark twain who said “reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated”. You go kavis reed! Go Als !

  5. Looks like Herb the burb was WRONG about FA players avoiding Montreal. WE all know B—S—walks and MONEY talks. Not always the case but most of the time it does in the CFL!!

Dang – was really hoping we’d get to keep Campbell, but I guess you can’t always get what you want. Here’s hoping that he can make as big an impact for the Als as he made for the Stamps, and can help bring a little more competitiveness to the East. Good luck, Tommy!

  8. Great player. Too bad the Als suck.
