Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Jeremiah Masoli new two-year contract is worth over $700,000 and included a signing bonus of $125,000.

The first year contains $235,000 in “hard money” with $90,000 in playtime incentives while the second features $335,000 “hard money” plus $45,000 in playtime incentives.

After being named Hamilton’s starting quarterback by June Jones on Sept. 4, Masoli led the Canadian Football League the rest of the season in passing yards (3,032) and rushing yards by a quarterback (384) and tied for second in passing touchdowns (15). Masoli went 6-4 over that stretch.

  1. Confusing … is the first year $235,000 plus incentives … AND he gets $125,000 as a signing bonus on top? And is any part of the second year money actually guaranteed … prepaid … or is “hard money” but subject to management’s option to cut and pay nothing?

    • “and INCLUDED a signing bonus of $125,000.” Included, being the key word there. Simple math can tell you that. $235,000 + $90,000 = $325,000 for first year. Second year is $335,000 + $45,000 = $380,000. $325,000 + $380,000 = $705,000.

    • Signing bonus money usually gets paid … well … when signing. I’d be surprised if it has not been paid already.

The first year seems to me to be $125K signing bonus already paid, $235K spread out over the 18 game schedule and performance bonus money paid at the end of the year.

The second year looks like $335K spread over 18 games then performance bonus money.

The quotes around “hard money” suggest that Masoli has to be on the roster or on the injury list to be paid the $$. Only guaranteed money is money already paid (ex. signing bonus, each paycheque).

Other than confirming a definition for hard money – I don’t see what is confusing.

  2. He’s earned every penny.

      I agree

Yeah, so hopefully he has giving up his former hobby/occupation of stealing from college students (that’s what got him kicked out of the University of Oregon). He is such a great guy, very deserving. Just like future teammate Johnny Headcase.

      • This is a very unfair and uncalled for comment. It’s also ignorant of reality.

Masoli has been a model citizen and teammate during his time in the CFL. He’s also committed himself to community work, such as his efforts to help and support Polynesian youth in American Samoa.

      • Buddy, you should throw “Lee” in there and you’ll be all complete. I was just about to suggest that you too probably did things in university that you probably wish you can take back…but then a sudden thought hit me that you actually have to pass Grade 8 first.

    • Yes he did…and more. Unlike others on the TC Wall of Shame.

    And he deserves it.

Not a fan when he arrived, his career has come full circle.

Here’s to a great year for Jeremiah and the Tiger cats

  4. That’s a lot of loonies and twoonies. Hard money.

  5. This tells me Manziel is not coming to Tiger-Cats. Too much to pay him to sit on the bench when Manziel starts. Either Manziel turns Down Hamilton deal plus any trade to Montreal or accepts trade to Montreal. If he is signed what a waste of money as he will not be on the bench for long. Maybe a couple of games start of the season.

    • I am not a Manziel fan and not hoping for his arrival but this contract could still make him tradable if M anziel arrived and had enough success to be declared the starter.

LOL…really getting tired of the “he led the league” for the rest of the season.
He is also the ONLY quarterback to play 10 games after labour day. Bo sat a few-Reilly was hurt-Nichols was hurt-Harris was hurt etc…if he DIDN’T lead the league after playing more games he shouldn’t be in the league

Well said. Average QB at best, So far.
May get better or collapse as a starter.
      Hope he does good.

    • We’re all really tired of your negativity towards Masoli Eddie. Please give it a rest.

    • Aren’t you going overboard about the difference in playing time of the last ten games to fit your POV?

Ray seems to not have been out – 10 of ten
Reilly seems to have been out for one quarter – 9.75 of ten.
Jennings looks like he split a game with Lulay – 9 out of ten.
Mitchell sat for the last game … like usual – 9 out of ten.
Nichols was injured ab it – 8.5 instead of ten.
Glenn – 6.75 out of ten
Harris was out a fair bit – 6.5 out of ten.
Durant – 4.75 out of ten

Some of the top QBs played the same games or pretty close.

  7. Great for Masoli….he’s a fierce competitor and his teammates really rallied behind him. When he took over it was a different team.

  8. Masoli #1 …i have said this for 2 years now ! As for Manziel If they sign him and he makes it through camp he will in no way shape or form beat Masoli out for the #1 spot !

  9. Too bad this contract isn’t longer than two years.
Masoli’s the real deal and will hopefully be here for many more winning seasons beyond 2019.

  10. could someone please explain. what is “hard money”? ….thanks

    • Not sure … but the quotes suggest that if the player is on the roster then they get paid the $$$. I can see no other reason to put quotes around it.

It would help if it was spelled out.
